Pure Love Imprisoned: My Ex-Boyfriend, Who Blamed Me, Imprisoned Me in Love
Chapter 63 Calling for People
Li Mingshao quickly lured the people away. Lin Mian leaned against the wall, her heart pounding so hard it felt like it was going to jump out of her throat. This was much more nerve-wracking than when she used to play escape room games.
Taking a deep breath, Lin Mian took off running.
Without looking back or stopping, she rushed across the intersection ahead. The red house was not far away. Lin Mian glanced at it hastily, turned a corner, and ran a few more steps. Suddenly, she saw two men running in her direction.
Lin Mian immediately retreated and noticed a pile of debris nearby. She quickly shrank back and hid behind a broken wooden plank.
Halfway through the tunnel, Lin Mian discovered that there was a little girl hiding inside.
She was very thin, with messy hair and bright eyes. She was looking at Lin Mian in terror, as if she was about to scream.
Lin Mian quickly rushed over and covered her mouth.
"Shh, I'm not a bad person." Lin Mian pressed the girl down.
Outside the pile of debris, two men who had run over stopped nearby, speaking in the local language that Lin Mian couldn't understand. She simply held her breath and waited.
The girl didn't move either.
Finally, the two men left.
Lin Mian covered the girl's mouth and whispered, "Can you understand Mandarin?"
The girl nodded.
Lin Mian hesitated. She was afraid that if she let the girl go, her whereabouts would be exposed. Her best course of action was to find a rope, tie the girl up, and gag her.
The girl then raised her hand and pointed to Lin Mian's neck; she saw the necklace chain.
It means that if you give her the necklace, she won't betray Lin Mian.
but……
"The necklace won't do, but I can give you money." Lin Mian pulled out a wad of cash. "You'll keep this a secret after you take the money, right?"
The girl nodded.
Lin Mian hesitated for a second. She knew the girl might break her promise, but she suddenly thought... let's take a gamble.
Lin Mian stuffed the cash into the girl's hand, climbed out from behind the door, and continued running towards the red house.
"Dad!" came the girl's shout from behind.
Lin Mian: "!"
She didn't look back, but ran forward as fast as she could. The girl's father quickly responded and then shouted something in Lin Mian's direction.
Lin Mian didn't understand, and she couldn't run into the red house smoothly. Someone was chasing her, and in order to avoid being caught by those people, she ran into a side road.
She got lost.
Lin Mian hadn't expected the slums here to be so large. She was so disoriented from being chased that she lost her sense of direction after turning a few corners.
She tried hard to discern the direction of the red house, but her view was blocked and she couldn't see it no matter what she did.
After wandering around for an unknown amount of time, just as she was about to leave the slums, she encountered two local police officers.
Then, she was cornered by the police.
The man with the buzz cut looked like he was of Chinese descent, while the other looked somewhat mixed-race. The former held Lin Mian back tightly, speaking in Mandarin that Lin Mian could understand: "Call Brother Manka and tell him we've caught a Chinese girl, she might be the one he's looking for."
The mixed-race man nodded and immediately took out his phone.
Lin Mian was so flustered that her forehead was covered in cold sweat and her heart was pounding wildly, but the more flustered she was, the calmer she became.
"I know your Director Yuan Guang," Lin Mian said, successfully stopping the mixed-race man from making the phone call. "I don't know why you arrested me, but if you don't let me go, you're in trouble tomorrow."
The two looked at Lin Mian suspiciously. How could someone who knew the Director-General possibly appear in a slum?
But then, the crew-cut man realized, "You're one of the people everyone went to such lengths to find tonight, aren't you?"
Lin Mian neither admitted nor refuted it, only saying, "I advise you to call Director Yuan Guang first. I don't think he's a magnanimous person. Be careful, or I might complain and make him hold a grudge against you."
The two hesitated as expected. After exchanging a glance, they did not continue to call Manka, but instead took Lin Mian to the police station not far away.
Because of the gunfight and explosion that night, everyone else in the station was out on field duty, leaving only an old man on duty and a few prisoners locked up.
Lin Mian was locked in a single cell. Two policemen were making a phone call not far away, and she clung to the iron bars, trying to eavesdrop.
The man with the buzz cut didn't say much on the phone, only clearly replying "yes" at the end.
"Am I right? I'm acquainted with your Director Yuan Guang." Observing the crew-cut man's reaction and confirming that she wouldn't be sold off for the time being, Lin Mian immediately pleaded, "Can I borrow your phone for a moment? I need to call someone to ransom me."
She's penniless now, and if she wants to bribe someone, she'll have to call in people.
The man with the buzz cut walked over and his attitude towards Lin Mian softened a bit: "The director told you to wait, he'll be here to see you soon. Until then, we can't do anything to you, including giving you your phone."
Lin Mian: "..."
After they finished speaking, the two sat down next to each other.
Lin Mian was exhausted after running around all night. She found a relatively clean place to sit down. Her mind was still tense, but after calming down, she felt somewhat dazed.
Lin Mian stood with her arms crossed, staring blankly at the dirty floor.
It wasn't quiet outside; occasionally, cars or people would walk by, indicating that the search party was out in force.
After learning that Lin Mianzhen knew Director Yuan Guang, the crew-cut man revealed some information to her: the gunfight and bombing attack tonight were very serious, many people died, two cars were destroyed, and a fire almost set off an entire street.
The incident alarmed the mayor, who issued an order overnight to immediately apprehend the thugs who carried out the attack, so police from across the city rushed to the scene.
"And Manka..." the crew-cut man said, "I heard that there were several young masters and ladies from wealthy families in the car. One of them was killed in the explosion, and two others are missing. The father of that family contacted Manka and hired all his men to search for them thoroughly."
The man with the buzz cut looked at Lin Mian and suspected that she might be one of the young ladies from one of the families, but he knew what he shouldn't ask and didn't say a word.
During those few minutes of conversation, the police station door was pushed open, and Chief Yuan Guang arrived with his men.
He was wearing a police uniform, his round belly bulging out, making him look comical, but the way he stared at Lin Mian was as bright as a seasoned wolf.
"Good evening, Director!"
"You may leave," Director Yuan Guang said.
The two men with buzz cuts immediately left.
Director Yuan Guang brought two tall and burly subordinates. Without saying a word, the two entered the cell next to Lin Mian's and used electric batons to knock out all the prisoners.
The crackling sound of the electric discharge and the sound of flesh being burned by electricity were clear and piercing, making Lin Mian's scalp tingle.
She stood up, her whole body tense.
Director Yuan Guang smiled at Lin Mian: "I didn't expect to see you again so soon. Miss Lin, why are you wandering around the slums alone? The He family had such a big incident tonight, where is Young Master He?"
Lin Mian gripped her arm tightly: "You'll find out if you call him."
Director Yuan Guang laughed and said, "Of course I'll call him, but today's bombing is really serious. If things go wrong, I might be dismissed. It's a real disaster, I've had a lot of bad luck, and suffered huge losses."
"So what I want to figure out right now is why you're in the slums?"
Lin Mian didn't want to talk about it, but her instincts told her that Director Yuan Guang was a very greedy person and she couldn't let him know about the gold mine.
The necklace around my neck felt slightly heavy, as if it were a reminder.
Lin Mian immediately came up with a solution. She took off her necklace and handed it to Director Yuan Guang: "I want to use this to get a phone call to He Duoye. You can ask him to explain to you why I'm in the slums."
Director Yuan Guang took the necklace, glanced at it, and curled his lip: "A gold necklace?"
Lin Mian said, "The sphere can be opened."
With a press of his fat, round finger, Director Yuan Guang's golden ball popped open, revealing the priceless ruby inside. Its bright fire reflected the greed and satisfaction in the director's eyes.
He snapped the sphere shut and said with a smile, "Of course I'll help with something as small as making a phone call."
