Border Prisoner: The Mad Boss Seduces Her Every Night
Chapter 4 The Familiar Man
The mountain path was cold after the rain stopped, and the fog was thick. The arrow wound on my back hurt like it was on fire.
Shi Luyu crawled down the slope, nearly falling several times, but managed to get back up each time.
As dawn approached, she finally collapsed on the side of the road at the foot of the mountain, unable to hold on any longer, in front of a small truck that was delivering vegetables into the mountains that morning.
The driver was terrified. Seeing that she was covered in blood and had injuries on her back, he quickly called someone to take her to the nearest hospital.
……
There was a faint smell of disinfectant in the ward.
When I woke up again, it was already broad daylight. The curtains weren't fully drawn, and the damp sunlight from the tropical city outside streamed in, so bright it was almost blinding.
She paused for a few seconds, then suddenly sat up, propping herself up on the bed.
The wound on her back was aggravated, causing her to break out in a cold sweat. But she couldn't care less, and frantically reached for the headboard and pillow.
What about cell phones?
She was breathing rapidly, and her heart began to beat erratically again.
Buddhist temple, mountains and forests, men in black, arrows, and the man standing on the pavilion looking down at her... scene after scene flooded back, making it hard for her to breathe.
She finally found her pile of mud- and blood-stained tattered clothes on the folding chair beside the bed. Her phone was in her coat pocket; the screen was cracked, but thankfully it still turned on.
Shi Luyu grabbed her phone and immediately called her mother.
A few seconds before the call connected, her throat was already choked up.
"Feed? Lulu?"
The moment Lin Jing's voice came from the other end, Shi Luyu almost burst into tears.
"Mom..." She started to speak, but her voice was hoarse. A wave of grievance and lingering fear washed over her, and her nose stung with tears. "I..."
She wanted to say, "Mom, I saw someone killing someone in the mountains last night."
I felt like I'd been shot in the back with an arrow, and I was terrified that I wouldn't make it back.
But before she could say those words, Lin Jing's slightly tired yet gentle voice came through first.
"Lulu, it rained heavily in Taimai last night. Mom kept calling you but couldn't get through. I was worried all night. Did you find shelter from the rain when you went to pray? Did you encounter any danger?"
Shi Luyu fell silent immediately.
She held her phone, tears welling in her eyes, but her throat felt like it was blocked with cotton, and she couldn't speak for a long time.
The ward was very quiet; the only sound was the dripping of the IV fluid.
On the other end of the phone, Lin Jing was still saying, "The signal here is bad. I went into the mining area the day before yesterday and only came out today."
"Your dad asked you several times this morning, worried that you wouldn't be able to adjust to being alone over there... Lulu, say something, don't scare your mom."
Shi Luyu closed her eyes slightly, suppressing the tears that were about to burst forth.
Her family has been in the jewelry and jade business in Southeast Asia for many years.
My father, Shi Xuchuan, is in poor health and has spent most of the past two years recuperating, leaving many things to be done by my mother, Lin Jing.
My mother went to Myanmar to look at new mines a couple of days ago. She must be exhausted from all that traveling back and forth.
My parents spoiled me from childhood to adulthood, giving me all the love and protection they could.
She couldn't afford to cause another disaster at a time like this.
Moreover, Shi Luyu dared not even imagine how Lin Jing would react after hearing this, let alone how anxious Shi Xuchuan would be if he knew she had almost died in the mountains.
"I'm fine, Mom." She forced a smile. "It's just that the rain was so heavy last night that my phone got wet and shut down. Did that scare you?"
"Are you really alright?" Lin Jing was still worried.
"Really." Shi Luyu looked down at the back of her hand, which was wrapped in gauze, and tried to keep her tone soft. "I just... I was alone over there last night and I missed you guys a little."
Lin Jing could always detect subtle changes in her daughter's emotions, and her voice immediately softened: "Are you still not used to it? It's okay, Lulu. You'll get used to it once you officially start school. If you really don't like it there, Mom and Dad can try to find a school for you."
Shi Luyu's nose stung even more, and she quickly shook her head, even though her mother couldn't see.
"I won't change it." She tried to sound cheerful. "I worked so hard to get in, I'm not going to give up so easily."
Lin Jing chuckled: "Alright, our Lulu has the best ideas."
"Where is Dad?" Shi Luyu asked softly.
"I just went for physical therapy," Lin Jing said. "I knew you got through on the phone, and I had to tell you that loving photography is a good thing, but don't always carry such a heavy camera bag. Your shoulders are already thin, and if you damage them, you'll complain of pain."
Upon hearing this, Shi Luyu finally broke down, and tears silently streamed down her face.
She quickly raised her hand to wipe it away: "Please tell Dad for me that I've been eating and sleeping well, and I haven't lost weight."
"Also, you and Dad need to take good care of yourselves."
On the other end of the phone, Lin Jing smiled faintly: "We know, we're relieved to see you safe."
After hanging up the phone, Shi Luyu stared blankly at her phone for a long time.
Only after the heat in her eyes had completely subsided did she slowly lower her head, bury her face in her palms, and let out a long breath.
She can't tell her now, her parents would be terrified.
-
The day I was discharged from the hospital, the sky over Taimai was very clear.
Shi Luyu was discharged from the hospital alone. Her back wound was still painful, and even the slightest movement would cause it to ache.
The hospital said the arrow didn't go all the way through; it only pierced a small part of his back. He lost a lot of blood, but fortunately, it avoided vital organs, and he survived.
I picked it up from under that man's hands...
However, she didn't feel much relief at escaping death. After considering it for two whole days, she decided to go to the police station to report the incident.
The police station is not far from the hospital. It is a gray-white building with several tall tropical trees in the courtyard, and the ground is covered with fallen leaves that have curled up from the sun.
Shi Luyu had only taken a few steps when she slowly stopped.
Several black SUVs were parked in the yard.
Several men, dressed in matching black uniforms, with unrestrained and arrogant expressions and guns at their waists, stood in groups of three or five smoking at the entrance of the police station.
Those black clothes, those military boots, and most striking of all were the gold snake and eagle epaulets on their uniforms…
Shi Luyu's breathing suddenly became sluggish and cold.
It was that group of people from the mountains that night!
Even at a glance, she recognized him! This had been her recurring nightmare for the past few days!
What sent chills down her spine even further was the attitude of the people at the police station towards them.
A middle-aged man in police uniform personally bent down to light a cigarette for one of them, his face beaming with a smile and his tone polite to the point of being ingratiating. Another young officer stood to the side holding documents, even speaking cautiously.
The courtyard was filled with a mingled smell of smoke and sweat, and the air was stuffy and stale.
Those people entered the police station as if it were their own home, coming and going as they pleased, and no one dared to stop them.
Shi Luyu stood there, her palms suddenly sweating profusely.
A few days ago there weren't so many people in black uniforms on the streets, but these past two days they seem to have suddenly appeared, filling the streets. She initially thought it was some kind of local security system, but now it seems that's not the case at all.
She suddenly realized that she might have come to the wrong place today.
But if you've already reached the door and then turn back, you'll only attract more attention.
She could only lower her head, trying her best to look like an ordinary student, and slowly move to the side.
She only entered the hall after the group of uniformed men had finally finished their cigarettes and slowly left.
She was greeted by a slightly overweight police officer with a name tag pinned to his chest, who was drinking coffee with his head down.
Shi Luyu stood in front of the table, her voice trembling with nervousness: "Hello, I'd like to... report a crime."
The officer looked up at her, his gaze sweeping over her pale, pretty face before lingering on the still-healing abrasions on her neck. His expression was somewhat perfunctory: "What is it?"
Shi Luyu hesitated, not daring to directly mention the murder in the mountains, and first asked, "Who were those people in black uniforms outside just now?"
The officer found it amusing: "You haven't been in Tamil Nadu for very long, have you?"
Shi Luyu nodded.
"No wonder." The officer leaned back in his chair, exhaling a thick, acrid smoke ring. "Those are the Xu family. Throughout Southeast Asia, wherever the Xu family is, they're there too."
He shrugged: "You'll understand once you've been in Tamil long enough that there are many things here that aren't decided by the police."
Shi Luyu's heart sank, and she asked softly, "Is the Xu family... very powerful?"
The police officer scoffed as if he had heard something naive, "Little girl, the Xu family isn't just powerful, they're incredibly influential."
"In the Golden Triangle, both the legitimate and criminal worlds, mountain trade routes, waterway ports, warehouses, border crossings, military bases... which place doesn't have to defer to them? The higher-ups have to deal with them, and the lower-ups depend on them for their livelihood! Do you think those were just ordinary security guards?"
He leaned closer, lowered his voice, and revealed a well-known secret:
"The Xu family is king here."
Shi Luyu felt a chill run down her spine, but forced herself to ask, "What if someone in their family breaks the law?"
"Breaking the law?" The officer was taken aback at first, then laughed. "Young lady, the Xu family is the law here."
After he finished speaking, he looked her up and down again, his tone suddenly changing: "What? Do you have a grudge against the Xu family?"
Shi Luyu's heart pounded, and she shook her head almost instinctively: "No, I was just... asking casually."
The Xu family has such powerful connections, and she has no evidence.
That night, due to excessive fear and the dim lighting, she didn't even see the man's face clearly.
In this way... there's no way to report it to the police.
The officer stared at her, trying to determine if she was telling the truth, and finally waved his hand: "Don't ask too many questions. A girl your age should just focus on her studies, be less curious, and don't get involved with them."
Shi Luyu's throat was dry. She managed a weak "hmm" and turned to leave.
She walked hurriedly and in a panic, and as soon as she stepped out the door, she bumped into a solid wall of black people.
It was a man wearing the same black uniform, with broad shoulders and a black armband with a gold serpent and eagle emblem.
Shi Luyu had just heard from the police officer that seeing this seal was equivalent to seeing the muzzle of the Xu family's gun.
"I'm sorry, please don't arrest me, I'm so sorry..."
Shi Luyu staggered from the impact, her face turning deathly pale. She was terrified, almost thinking she was about to be recognized and dragged away.
The man looked down at the girl, who was quite young and pretty, frowned, cursed in the local dialect, and then impatiently added in Chinese, "Watch where you're going."
After saying that, he went straight into the police station without giving her a second glance.
Shi Luyu was stunned for a long time before she realized:
They didn't come to arrest her.
Perhaps... those people didn't even realize she had escaped that night.
Perhaps to them, she was just an accidental death in the mountains, not worth the trouble of searching for.
She was incredibly lucky to be alive.
Shi Luyu gripped the bag strap tightly, forcing herself to calm down.
Southeast Asia has always been a turbulent region.
Her parents had warned her long ago not to run around, not to meddle in other people's business, and to just focus on her studies.
She can't go near those people anymore.
Absolutely not!
-
Two weeks later, the rainy season in Taimai finally became a bit milder.
Shi Luyu stood outside the south gate of Taimai University, walking and answering a phone call, her gaze falling on the rows of light-colored teaching buildings not far away.
She has almost recovered; although the injury on her back hasn't fully healed, she can now move around freely.
For the past two weeks, she forced herself not to think about what happened that night, suppressing all her fears into her dreams. During the day, she ate, took photos, and organized videos as usual, living as if nothing had happened.
On the other end of the phone, Lin Jing's voice was cheerful: "What time does the event start? Did Mom disturb you?"
"No, not at all." Shi Luyu, with her slender frame carrying a large bag and a camera around her neck, was taking pictures of the newly hung welcome banner at the school gate.
"The school said that my previously submitted video work was selected as a freshman award, and invited me to participate in today's campus video exchange activity. They even gave us advance access to the museum."
"Our Lulu is amazing!" Lin Jing said happily. "I'll take some pictures to show Mom later."
"Okay, I know." Shi Luyu smiled, her usual cheerful demeanor returning. "By the way, Mom, didn't you say you arranged for someone to pick me up?"
"Yes," Lin Jing said, "Your brother Jiajia is waiting for you near the south gate of the school."
"Brother Jiajia, do you remember? When you were little, you always clung to them to play. But their family came to Thailand early on, and we lost touch."
Lin Jing was speaking enthusiastically: "Now they're much richer than us, they have several luxury cars. The young man is also a good person, very tall, and has a mixed-race face. Whenever Mom mentions you, he says he'll take care of you."
Shi Luyu was amused by her: "You're making it sound like you're introducing someone to a potential partner."
"So what?" Lin Jing said matter-of-factly, "I'm good-looking and have good character, can't my mother even say a few words of praise?"
Shi Luyu smiled and raised her hand to shield her eyes from the sun. Just as she was about to say something, she suddenly caught a glimpse of a Maybach parked on the side of the road ahead.
The car is luxurious and elegant, with sharp lines, and it sits quietly under the shade of the trees.
A man was standing next to the car.
He was tall with sharp shoulders and a deep, sculpted profile. He had short, neatly parted, jet-black hair, wore a glossy black leather jacket, and casually rolled-up sleeves that revealed a section of his pale yet powerful wrist bone.
He was leaning against the car, head slightly bowed, slowly wiping his shoes with a wet wipe.
His movements were elegant yet relaxed and composed.
The sunlight was bright, and because of the distance, Shi Luyu couldn't see the details clearly. She only noticed that there seemed to be a dark red mark on his fingertips, and a dark red tinge on the edge of his shoes.
Suddenly, an inexplicable, eerie sense of familiarity crept up my spine from my back.
A chilling and terrifying feeling washed over her, but quickly dissipated. She shook her head, unable to recall anything.
She stood there, staring intently at the man through the passing crowds and the swaying shadows of the trees.
It just felt strangely familiar.
Lin Jing was still laughing on the phone, saying, "Have you seen him? If you haven't found him, I'll give you his phone number."
Oh, right! The childhood playmate "Brother Jiajia" that Mom just described on the phone—
Driving a luxury car, tall, mixed-race features... it all fits.
Shi Luyu perked up: "No need, Mom, I saw him!"
She said a few words to her mother and then hung up the phone, running towards the man.
