Uncle Nine: You were supposed to drive corpses, so you summoned the Monkey King!
Chapter 86: Western Zombies Aren't Afraid of Maoshan Techniques?
The figures in the main hall stopped biting and turned their heads.
By the candlelight, Lin Chen could see the face clearly.
Its face was deathly pale, its eyes sunken, and two inch-long fangs protruded from its mouth, stained with blood. The young monk John, drained of his blood, was casually tossed onto the stone slab.
"What the hell is this?!" asked Master Four Eyes.
He gripped the fifty-pound Crimson Flame Copper Greatsword with both hands, and the heavy sword hurtled straight towards the monster's head.
Unlike the zombies of the Middle-earth, this monster did not suffer from stiff joints; it bent its knees and moved its body backward three meters.
With a loud bang.
The Crimson Copper Greatsword struck the prayer altar, shattering the wooden platform into pieces, with broken pieces flying wildly throughout the hall.
Lin Chen shouted at Si Mu.
"Master, be careful! That's a Western zombie!"
He made a hand seal, and the expert-level corpse-suppressing talisman between his fingertips turned into yellow light and stuck to the Western zombie's forehead.
Logically speaking, even an armored corpse should be frozen in place for a second under the effect of a master-level corpse-suppressing talisman.
The yellow talisman didn't even produce a spark or a golden light when it was pasted on; it turned into waste paper and fell to the ground.
It doesn't work. Just like in the movies, Western zombies aren't afraid of Maoshan magic. These things don't have any corpse energy and aren't under the jurisdiction of the Maoshan founder.
The Western zombie glanced at the yellow talisman on the ground and let out a roar.
Its ten fingers, each with a black claw, spread out and lunged straight at Lin Chen.
Lin Chen used the Seven Star Step to sidestep the claws reaching for his throat, and with a flick of his right hand, he slashed the Western zombie across its ribs with the lightning-struck wooden sword.
With a sizzling sound.
The lightning-struck wooden sword unleashed its righteous energy, burning through the Western zombie's black robe and scorching a charred gash in its pale flesh, from which white smoke billowed.
The Western zombie let out a scream.
Heavenly Thunder and Righteous Qi are effective against it.
The Western zombie, in pain, twisted its waist in mid-air, and lashed out with a long leg toward Lin Chen's waist.
Lin Chen aimed at the trajectory, clenched his left fist, channeled his magic power into his left arm, adopted the stance of Maoshan Ordinary Fist, and punched the leg.
With a bang.
The fists and legs collided, producing a dull thud.
Lin Chen stood still, not even swaying his shoulders.
The Western zombie was sent flying seven or eight meters away by the punch, crashing into the plaster statue of the Virgin Mary on the wall, which shattered into pieces.
The Western zombie's right leg was broken, and its lower leg was twisted in an eerie direction.
Lin Chen carried his sword and walked forward.
The Western zombie crawled out of the rubble.
It felt no pain, reached out and grabbed the broken leg bone, snapped it back into place with a crack, and the charred wound from the lightning-struck wooden sword was also healing rapidly.
"You're pretty tough." The Four-Eyed Taoist charged forward, sword in hand. "I'll chop you into mincemeat and see how you grow back!"
The greatsword swept horizontally, carrying the fiery aura of crimson copper, heading straight for the Western zombie's waist and abdomen.
The Western zombie's tattered black priest robe ripped open, revealing two large bulges, and then two bat-like wings unfolded.
With a flap of its wings, the Western zombie soared into the air, hovering in mid-air to dodge the sword aimed at its waist by Si Mu.
"Winged zombies? Another flying yaksha?" Master Four Eyes looked up, his greatsword planted firmly on the ground.
The Western zombie hovered in mid-air, staring at Lin Chen.
It had just been resurrected and had only absorbed the blood of an ordinary person. Its strength had not yet recovered. The two Taoist priests in front of it were a powerful one who could break its leg with a single punch and a one who was wielding a heavy sword and slashing wildly.
You won't gain anything by fighting head-on.
The Western zombie opened its mouth and emitted a silent wave.
Lin Chen triggered the initial stage of divine power intimidation.
His mind went blank for a moment, but his mental attributes forced him to suppress the sonic attack, and he regained his senses.
Master Simu didn't have such high mental resistance; he was so shocked that he covered his ears, cursing and taking two steps back.
Taking advantage of the lull, the Western zombie flapped its wings and rushed toward the stained glass windows above the church.
With a whoosh.
Glass shards were scattered all over the ground, and the Western zombie transformed into a large black bat and flew into the night.
The church fell silent.
Master Four Eyes walked over, rubbing his ears. "What kind of weird thing is this? It runs faster than a rabbit."
Lin Chen put away the lightning-struck wooden sword. This guy could fly in the middle of the night, so chasing after him would be a waste of effort. He walked over to John's body and squatted down to examine it.
John's face shrunk, revealing two coin-sized holes in his carotid artery.
Lin Chen reached out and touched the withered flesh at the edge of the wound.
"It's not a zombie." Lin Chen stood up and brushed the dust off his hands.
"No corpse aura?" Master Four Eyes leaned closer to examine it. "No wonder your corpse-suppressing talisman didn't work. What bit this foreign monk to death?"
"There's no corpse poison, the wound edges are very clean, and apart from being drained of blood, there are no signs of reanimation." Lin Chen looked at the shattered stained glass window. "This is a Western corpse. Westerners' territory is not under the jurisdiction of the Three Pure Ones. This thing is called a vampire."
"Vampires? What's the difference between them and our zombies?"
"There's a big difference. They're not afraid of talismans, ordinary cinnabar, or peach wood swords, but they're afraid of sunlight, silverware, and probably garlic and crosses as well," Lin Chen recalled, recalling this common knowledge.
A series of hurried footsteps could be heard outside the church.
Father Wu, carrying a kerosene lamp, ran over from the side room with two other young monks.
Father Wu rushed into the main hall, the kerosene lamp illuminating the mess on the floor: the broken prayer altar, the statue of the Virgin Mary, and John lying in a pool of blood.
"Oh God!"
Father Wu pointed at Lin Chen and the Four-Eyed Taoist Priest, shouting in broken Chinese, "You! You heretics! How dare you kill in the Lord's land!"
Master Simu was known for his explosive temper, and upon hearing this, he pointed at Father Wu.
"Old foreigner, which eye of yours saw us kill someone? We were just trying to save someone but failed!"
Father Wu walked quickly to John's body, looked at the shriveled corpse, and looked up at the open iron door to the basement behind the prayer table.
Lin Chen followed Father Wu's gaze and saw that the basement door was open, and the inside was pitch black.
"Father, you can eat whatever you want, but you can't say whatever you want." Lin Chen stepped forward, his lightning-struck wooden sword resting on his shoulder, and looked at Father Wu. "Look closely at the teeth marks on his neck. If we were to kill someone, would we need to bite them?"
Father Wu stared at the teeth mark, examining it closely.
Lin Chen continued, "This church hasn't been open for twenty years. You know what kind of filthy things are locked inside. The vampire with fangs and wings that just flew out came from your basement."
"Impossible...this is impossible..." Father Wu muttered, turning to look at the entrance to the basement.
"The prayer cross that was suppressed in the basement is gone..."
Lin Chen grasped the key point.
"A prayer crucifix?" Lin Chen looked at Father Wu. "Was that used to pin down that vampire?"
Father Wu dropped the kerosene lamp and rushed to the basement.
Lin Chen and Master Simu exchanged a glance and followed.
The basement stairs were long, and the deeper you went, the stronger the sour smell of corpses became.
Reaching the bottom, Lin Chen saw the scene in the corner, aided by the light filtering in.
Two large iron rings were embedded in the wall, and thick steel chains were attached to the rings, with the other end of the chains empty.
On the stone slab on the ground, a large six-pointed star array was painted in dark red paint, with a silver cross covered in black ash lying in the center of the array.
Father Wu knelt before the six-pointed star diagram, held the cross in his hands, and closed his eyes.
"It's over... the seal has been broken. The old priest from twenty years ago has become a devil..."
Lin Chen walked to the chain and reached out to touch the scratch marks on the wall. Five finger marks had been pried out of the stone slab.
"Father, what on earth is going on?" Master Four Eyes asked, slamming his greatsword into the ground. "You've come all this way to reopen the church just to release this thing?"
Father Wu stood up and held the cross.
"Twenty years ago, the old priest here turned into a blood-sucking monster. The Vatican sent people to nail him here and seal his heart with a cross." Father Wu looked at Lin Chen. "John was ignorant; he pulled out the cross."
Lin Chen spoke.
"Your own affairs have caused such a huge mess. This Western zombie has flown out. It just sucked the blood of one person and wasn't full yet. Now the entire population of Jiuquan Town is its blood bank."
Father Wu's face was grim.
"What should we do then?" Master Four Eyes frowned. "This thing is not afraid of talismans and it runs fast."
Lin Chen turned and walked out of the basement.
"Back to the inn. It just woke up and is injured. It won't come out again tonight." Lin Chen continued walking. "Tomorrow, I'll go to the town hall to see Mayor Ye."
"Why are you looking for him?" Four Eyes asked from behind.
"Didn't Mayor Ye want to use the church's basement to hide opium?" Lin Chen looked at the dark basement. "The shipment of Dragon Slayer will definitely be transported here tomorrow."
