The convoy finally drove away from the residential compound.

No one spoke. Team Leader Song sat in the command vehicle, looking at the bloody scratches on his arm caused by his fingernails.

He didn't treat the wounds; he just looked at them.

The old police officer sitting next to him was a little pale, but his hands were shaking again; the kick he had just received had broken his ribs.

He hated high heels, gritted his teeth, and bent down to fill the magazine.

He pressed one bullet after another, only because his ribs hurt so badly that his trembling hands made it difficult to press a single bullet properly.

Among the survivors in the carriage, some hugged their children tightly, while others covered their faces.

What just happened was absolutely terrifying.

Those ferocious beasts were so close to them that they could smell the stench emanating from them.

No one questioned her, and no one defended the woman.

When one's life is threatened.

Compassion is not in the hierarchy of human emotions; only survival matters.

By the time I got back to the supermarket, it was completely dark.

The fog is more sensitive to changes in light than it was before the apocalypse; even slight changes in light can visibly reduce the visibility of the fog.

Visibility has shrunk from five meters during the day to less than three meters.

The car headlights could only illuminate a small patch of billowing fog.

The originally grayish-white mist has now turned dark, like ink dripped into water.

The two police officers who remained on duty mobilized the supermarket to bring back the survivors, and they have already cleaned up the ashes on the second floor of the supermarket.

They used the collapsed shelves to make do with roadblocks at the entrance.

Although rudimentary, it could at least keep out small monsters.

Upon seeing the convoy return, one of the officers jogged over, about to report the situation.

His gaze swept over the dent in the front of the armored vehicle and the deep claw marks.

He swallowed back the words that were about to come out.

The car door opened, and Lin You got out. Her arms swinging in front of her chest told everyone that she was not in good condition.

The officer simply stated, "The supermarket is safe. There are no abnormalities."

Team Leader Song got out of the command vehicle, still clutching the rescue list, which was wrinkled and soaked with sweat.

Everyone on the list is here, except for some that can no longer be found.

Some of those who were rescued first have been sent back to the scenic area base.

Now the supermarket only has survivors from the fourth and last batches.

He folded the list and put it in his pocket. He walked to the armored vehicle and saw that Lin You's arm was bleeding through the sleeve.

"You need to treat your wound."

"Let's decide how to spend tonight first." Lin You's face was covered in sweat, but her movements didn't stop.

She walked to the supermarket entrance, and police officers who ran out immediately helped push the door open and cleared some of the stacked shelves behind it.

Lin You whispered, "Thank you."

Mu Xue looked at Lin You with concern, wanting to help her but not daring to, and cautiously followed behind Lin You.

Following behind the two, Team Leader Song asked, "Are we setting off tonight?"

Lin You was already sitting on a row of plastic chairs provided for rest in the supermarket, and turned on her chest lamp to start treating the injury on her arm.

Lin You's face turned very pale because her arm was broken.

While thinking about how to treat her wound, Lin You replied, "Two choices. Go back to the scenic area tonight, or stay here overnight and leave at dawn."

Team Leader Song thought for a moment and then gave his opinion, "Let's leave tonight. The convoy isn't in good condition, and your injury will affect our combat. That giant beast is dead, but there are many more around. Spending the night in the city is risky; if we get surrounded, the defenses here aren't very good."

Mu Xue nodded in agreement, saying, "The supermarket's roller shutter door is too weakly secured; it's dangerous to spend the night here."

Team Leader Song and Mu Xue both looked at Lin You.

She didn't speak immediately but instead tended to her injured arm.

The wound on his left arm was exposed under the light of the chest lamp, and his entire forearm was deformed.

The accumulation of blood stasis caused his forearm to swell up.

Her skin was stretched until it glowed a bright red.

Mu Xue took out disinfectant and a suture kit from the first aid kit, looking at the injury and not knowing how to treat it.

Team Leader Song said to Old Li, who was standing to the side, "Go and see if anyone is a doctor, preferably a surgeon. If so, bring them over to treat the wound."

"Yes!" It wasn't Old Li who answered Team Leader Song.

Instead, it was the police officer who ran out who said, "We've done a preliminary screening, and a few of them are doctors. I'll have them come over right now."

Lin You tapped her intact fingers on the table, her brows furrowed as she weighed the pros and cons.

When the doctor who arrived poured disinfectant onto the wound, Lin You paused, her fingers tapping the table.

"We'll stay here tonight," Lin You said. "We'll leave as soon as it's light."

Her reasoning was clear: there were injured and elderly people in the convoy, and if something happened while traveling at night, the reaction time would be slower than during the day.

In addition, Team Leader Song and his comrades were busy with rescue efforts all day long.

If we keep working late into the night, our combat effectiveness will drop below the critical point.

Moreover, they had just experienced an extremely dangerous battle, even if the battle only lasted a few minutes.

However, for an ordinary person, this is already the limit of both their nerves and body.

In such circumstances, traveling recklessly in the dark, especially in a large convoy, would almost certainly result in an attack by a strange beast.

After all, they are simply too attractive because they represent food.

After listening, Team Leader Song stopped insisting on his own opinion and nodded, saying, "How should we arrange the night watch?"

After the doctor bled Lin You's arm, her arm returned to normal.

Continuing to suture Lin You, the needle pierced through the flesh, each stitch accompanied by the soft sound of fine thread being pulled across the skin.

Her arm was not only fractured, but also had a deep wound.

I don't know where the injury was caused.

Lin You frowned and said, "You take two people to guard the first half of the night, and I'll take Mu Xue to guard the second half."

Team Leader Song watched the doctor's actions with admiration in his eyes.

The doctor has finished treating the wound and is now putting a splint on Lin You's fractured forearm.

Neither of them spoke.

Lin You stood up and sheathed the mantis knife back into its sheath. "Be prepared tonight. Arrange all the cars in a U-shape around the supermarket entrance, with the front of the cars facing outwards. Make sure the keys are in the ignition in each car. Everyone else will sleep on the second floor of the supermarket. The rooftop iron gate at the second-floor staircase is locked from the inside. Connect all the shelves at the first-floor entrance, and save the remaining Molotov cocktails for the most dangerous situation."

After a pause, Lin You continued, "Remember, everyone stay quiet."

As she spoke, Lin You arrived at the supermarket entrance.

There are already some shelves stacked behind the glass doors and windows.

The supermarket's roller shutter door was only half-drawn, and gray mist seeped in through the gaps, swirling around the bonfire burning in the supermarket.

Lin You sat on a plastic chair next to the cashier, her left arm bandage still hanging around her neck.

A mantis knife was placed on the cashier's counter, and he was wiping it with a towel in his hand.

Mu Xue randomly picked a plastic box that didn't seem to contain anything, sat down next to her, and wiped the shotgun with an old cloth.

She had previously encountered a strange beast at the entrance of her residential compound and fired two shots.

He took down a monster at close range, and the splattered green blood stained the shotgun.

It has a strange, sticky feel to the touch.

Now that she had some time, Mu Xue wanted to clean up her weapons.

The people in the back of the truck were helped out one by one.

An elderly couple sat in a corner, supporting each other. The middle-aged man leaned against the water tank, clutching a worn-out travel bag tightly in his arms.

The last one to get out was the young armed police driver. After parking the car, he didn't get out immediately, but instead sat in the driver's seat.

He still had his hands gripping the steering wheel, and had been doing so for a long time.

Team Leader Song walked up to the truck at some point and knocked on the window.

The young armed police driver then let go of the car door, opened it, and jumped out.

He looked terrible, with a deep frown on his face.

"Captain Song," his voice was a little hoarse, "I'm fine."

Team Leader Song patted him on the shoulder without asking any further questions. He turned back to the supermarket, walked to the checkout counter, and sat down opposite Lin You.

Mu Xue looked up at him, placed the cleaned shotgun on her lap, and remained silent with her lips tightly pressed together.

He paused, his gaze falling on Lin You's sling before shifting away.

He didn't ask her how her wound was; such formalities were no longer necessary between them.

He wanted to talk about something else.

"Xiao Zhou isn't acting right. He didn't say a word in the car, and he won't get out after we stopped."

Lin You paused in wiping the mantis knife, then continued wiping it.

"Who is Xiao Zhou?"

Team Leader Song paused for a moment and then said, "He's the driver of the first truck that leaves the community."

Lin You picked up the mantis knife in her hand and looked at it sideways to see if there was any remaining beast blood on it. "He saw me fire the gun."

"It wasn't just him." Team Leader Song thought for a moment, then lowered his voice, "Everyone in the back of the train saw it, and the way they looked at you changed."

Mu Xue stopped cleaning her gun and looked up.

"What does 'changed' mean?"

"Have you ever seen the way someone looks at a murderer?" Team Leader Song asked Lin You.
