American forensics, but the gourmet system
Chapter 64 Image Processing and the Reappearance of the Murderer
The video is about to end.
In the video, Dr. Simmons begins stuffing Jennifer's internal organs into a large plastic bag, leaving Aina, who is standing nearby, dumbfounded.
Why did he put his internal organs in a bag like that?
"That's quite normal." Russell casually pressed the pause button and explained to Aina, "If we don't do it this way, the removed internal organs will seep blood and a bunch of fluids you don't really want to know about in the abdominal cavity... If it's confirmed to be an accidental death and there's no need to take samples of the whole organs, we usually do it this way."
"That's good..." Aina breathed a sigh of relief. "I thought he was going to take his internal organs with him..."
The video continued playing, showing Dr. Simmons stitching up the incisions on Jennifer's body.
"Did you notice anything wrong with him?" Aina turned to Russell and asked, "From your perspective as a forensic pathologist."
"No." Russell shrugged. "His procedures didn't involve any irregularities. The only suspicious thing is that his anatomical skills are just too good. So good that they shouldn't be here..."
"But that can't be evidence for conviction, can it?" Aina retorted. "Otherwise, we'd have to arrest all the good forensic doctors living in small towns."
"You're right." Russell nodded somewhat helplessly, then turned his gaze back to the computer screen where the video was playing.
In the video, Dr. Simmons finishes suturing, takes off his gloves and protective suit, throws them in the trash can, and begins washing his hands in the sink.
A few seconds later, he shook the water droplets off his hands, wiped them briefly, and walked towards the camera.
The camera shook, and the image began to blur.
The video has ended.
"Wait a minute." Russell frowned. "Did you see anything in the footage just now, Aina?"
"Yes, I saw it too." Aina rewound the video for a few seconds and selected 0.5x slow motion.
The image began to shake, and the entire autopsy room started to blur.
Clearly, this camera's image stabilization function is not particularly good.
Then--
Aina pressed the pause button.
In the blurry image, a blurry human figure appeared.
"Who is this?" Russell leaned closer to the computer, looking at the figure on the screen. "Is it Officer Andre?"
"This person has been standing in the corner of the dissection room without saying a word?" Aina asked.
Aina's head was very close to Russell's cheek; Russell could even feel a few strands of hair moving toward his cheek due to static electricity...
"Yes." Russell let the few strands of hair stick to his face, tickling him. "Dr. Simmons didn't say a word throughout the entire autopsy. From his reactions, you couldn't tell that there was another person in the autopsy room."
"Alright." Aina dragged over an office chair and sat down in front of Simmons' computer. "Then, if we can make this photo clearer, we'll know who this mysterious person who appeared in the autopsy room is..."
She casually pulled a USB drive from her pocket and plugged it into the computer.
"Hey! You actually carry a USB drive with you?"
Russell looked completely bewildered.
"Don't you always carry gloves and an evidence bag with you?" Aina retorted, clicking the mouse a few times to open the USB drive. "This only contains some software tools I use frequently. I can't exactly carry my computer around with me, can I?"
"That's true..."
Russell was persuaded by Aina.
Aina started installing software on her computer, then she exited to the video interface and captured a screenshot of the mysterious figure appearing.
"This picture is so blurry..." Russell was a little incredulous. "You can barely make out a human figure. You think you can make it clear?"
Aina didn't say anything like "Let me try," "Maybe," or "Possibly." She confidently opened the first image processing software, which Russell recognized as Photoshop.
"sure."
Aina dragged the screenshot she had just taken into Photoshop.
"Currently, the mainstream image enhancement technology is spatial domain image enhancement," Aina explained to Russell while demonstrating. "To put it simply, it uses histogram processing to make the pixels in the image clearer. When the pixels are clearer, the image is naturally clearer."
Russell pondered for a few seconds, confirming that he understood what Aina had said:
"But this image doesn't seem to be blurry because the pixels aren't clear enough..."
"Yes, you're right." Aina stared intently at the screen, her right hand sliding the mouse while her left hand clattered across the keyboard. "Enhance the pixels first to lay a good foundation; that way, the final result will naturally be better in subsequent processing."
Russell felt that Aina's explanation this time was concise and clear, and sounded much simpler than when she used 3D modeling technology to help him with the broken leg case last time.
A glimmer of hope suddenly rose in his mind; perhaps he could learn from Aina how to make blurry photos clearer…
"I see." Russell asked hopefully, "So, what's the follow-up?"
Russell had to admit that Aina was a patient teacher.
But Russell was not a good student.
When Aina opened the second, third, and fourth image processing software that Russell didn't recognize, she began to demonstrate and explain to Russell how to convert an image into a two-dimensional signal, and then use Fourier transform, wavelet transform, and stable defusion to denoise, filter, and enhance the image signal.
Russell's head was starting to spin.
He had only studied a little bit about Fourier transforms, and he had never even heard of the other terms Aina mentioned.
Helplessly, he could only watch as Aina's slender, fair fingers danced across the keyboard, leaving behind a series of clattering sounds like pearls falling onto a jade plate.
These daunting functions and formulas were a formidable challenge not only for Russell, but also for Dr. Simons's office computer.
No one would equip a regular forensic pathologist with a computer worth $1.5.
I would never install the latest Nvidia graphics card in my computer...
The computer started screaming, sounding quite like the fat policeman Seth vomiting.
Aina stared intently at the computer screen, oblivious to the few strands of hair clinging to her forehead, which only added to her unique charm.
After Russell's learning mindset was gradually worn away by formulas and equations, he simply began to appreciate Aina herself.
Half an hour later, the poor computer case became scorching hot, and Russell could vaguely feel the heat emanating from it.
The percentage representing the image processing progress has finally jumped to 100%.
A photo popped up on the screen.
The photo shows a tall, thin man with his arms crossed, standing in the corner of the dissection room.
Russell and Aina exchanged a glance, both seeing the shock in each other's eyes.
The blurry man who appeared in Simmons' autopsy video turned out to be his killer: Am Fabian.
