American forensics, but the gourmet system
Chapter 51 Barbecue and Murder
As Russell drove into the farm hotel parking lot at dusk, he unexpectedly ran into an old acquaintance.
Hmm... two old acquaintances.
"Oh oh oh oh oh!"
A beagle jumped out of an old Chevrolet sedan, tilting its head back and barking excitedly.
"Little Ka! Don't yell like that!"
Mr. Clarkson squeezed out of the driver's seat.
Meanwhile, Little Ka had already swished its big ears and crawled under the car, pouncing on Russell's legs and sniffing incessantly, its tail wagging like it had a motor.
"What an adorable puppy!"
Aina's eyes lit up, and Xiao Ka also swayed his head and moved closer to Aina's legs, sniffing Aina's boots incessantly.
Good evening, Mr. Clarkson.
Russell greeted the dog owner politely.
Clarkson was taken aback, clearly recognizing the young forensic pathologist who had once dug a hole in his backyard to search for bones.
"Ah... Dr. Russell." Clarkson's expression was clearly uncomfortable. "I didn't expect to run into you here..."
"That's quite a coincidence." Russell nodded, a smile on his face. "Has the NYPD subsidy arrived yet?"
In order to find a skeleton that had been missing for two years, the Major Crimes Unit dug up Clarkson's backyard from top to bottom. The NYPD's grant was to help Mr. Clarkson restore his backyard lawn.
"Not yet." Clarkson shrugged. "Anyway, I'm used to the federal government's efficiency... Hopefully, they'll give me the subsidy before I'm cremated... Is this your girlfriend, Dr. Russell?"
Aina had already bent down and started playing with Xiao Ka's big ears. Xiao Ka stretched out one hind leg, sat half-on the ground, and hummed comfortably.
Upon hearing Clarkson's question, Aina's hand visibly paused, as if she wanted to eavesdrop on Russell's answer.
"Um...this is my good friend, Aina. Aina, this is Mr. Clarkson, he is...uh..."
"A victim of a murder, but he didn't die," Clarkson said, shrugging.
All three laughed, and Aina and Clarkson greeted each other. Clarkson seemed to really like the pretty older sister, bouncing around Aina like a big yellow and white rabbit.
Russell led the way toward the restaurant.
The aroma of wood-smoked beef wafted out from somewhere, and Russell's stomach began to rumble with hunger.
I only ate some vegetable salad for lunch, and then masturbated for three or four hours in the afternoon.
Russell felt he could eat a whole cow right now.
The group chatted as they walked toward the restaurant.
"Are you also here with your son, Mr. Clarkson?"
"Yeah, staying home all the time is making my old bones rust a bit." Clarkson nodded, catching Little Ka who was trying to sneak away. "I arrived this morning and took Little Ka to visit the ranch... Little Ka almost got kicked by a horse, but it seemed to have a lot of fun..."
The three people and their dog quickly arrived at the restaurant entrance. Since many customers bring their pets on vacation, the restaurant allows pets to enter, but they must be on a leash.
Clarkson put a leash on Little Car, who seemed unhappy. He sniffled and whimpered a few times, pulling on the leash to try and run to the other side of the restaurant, but Mr. Clarkson grabbed him.
Little Ka got a little angry and started yelling at the row of houses behind the restaurant:
"Oh oh oh oh oh!"
"Shut your mouth, you stupid dog!"
Mr. Clarkson said, not too harshly.
Aina squatted down and gave the dog's head a good pat, which finally cheered Xiao Ka up again.
Seeing that Aina really liked Kawhi Leonard, Russell simply said to Clarkson:
"Hey, Mr. Clarkson, how about we share a seat? We can also help look after little Carter..."
Clarkson was more than happy to agree and immediately accepted.
Soon, a table was piled high with fruitwood-smoked beef ribs, brisket, beef tongue, pork neck, pork chops, pork hind leg, sausages, and chicken wings.
American-style barbecue, with its low-temperature slow-roasting method, consumes a lot of wood, but the advantage is that it is very easy to control the heat.
As long as you control the oven temperature and the smoking time, you don't need to have high culinary skills to make it look decent.
Russell forked a piece of beef brisket, put it in his mouth, and began to chew.
Juicy and smooth, with a subtle smoky aroma on the outside and the rich meaty flavor of grass-fed beef inside.
Even considering Russell's masterful control of the heat, there's nothing wrong with it.
The only minor flaw is that this beef has a little too much intramuscular fat; it's from a fat cow.
The first bite of meat was incredibly delicious, but after the second and third bites, it became a little greasy.
However, along with the meat came pickled cucumbers, a perfect remedy for cutting through the greasiness.
And the farm's specialty, freshly squeezed apple juice.
If you get tired of it, that's okay. Have a bite of pickled cucumber, a sip of apple juice, and you can still eat a few more pieces of fatty beef.
"Hey, Kawhi, have a piece of brisket." Clarkson picked up a piece of meat and tossed it to Kawhi, who caught it quickly and began to chew it happily.
"It's so cute," Aina said with a smile, looking at Little Ka. "Is Little Ka a girl?"
"A girl? Yes, that's right." Clarkson nodded. "But I often forget that... To be honest, she's more mischievous than most male dogs I've ever met."
Russell suspected the problem was with the Beagle breed, but he had no evidence.
To prevent Aina from impulsively buying a beagle to keep in the apartment, Russell quickly changed the subject:
"Did you go riding today, Mr. Clarkson?"
"Just call me Weatherby, Dr. Russell." Clarkson took a swig of apple juice, wiped his mouth, and said, "You can't bring a card while riding, so I didn't participate... Anyway, riding isn't exactly a safe thing for an old man like me, is it?"
Little Ka started whimpering.
"Alright, Kawhi." Clarkson tossed it another piece of pork neck. "Stop barking. This is way tastier than your dog food. Have another piece, or you won't get any more at home—hey, Kawhi!"
Instead of catching the pork neck, Little Ka's head popped out of its collar, weaving between table legs and human legs before rushing towards the restaurant entrance.
The first to react was Aina. She quickly stood up, took long strides, and chased after Xiao Ka in the direction he had fled.
Russell jumped up and followed behind Aina.
"Excuse me, excuse me, may I pass..."
Russell nearly knocked over two waiters who were serving food, and chased after Kay and Aina out of the restaurant.
In the dim light, he could vaguely see Little Ka howling and running towards a row of houses behind the restaurant.
Aina chased after it closely, but Little Ka went around the corner and disappeared into the woods behind the house.
By the time Russell caught up, the man and the dog had stopped running, and the barking had subsided.
In the woods, the phone screen lit up.
"Aina, Aina?"
Russell walked toward the direction where the phone was lit up, calling out Aina's name as he went.
Further behind, Mr. Clarkson caught up, panting heavily.
"Russell..." Aina called his name softly.
"What's wrong, Aina? Did you catch Kaka?" Russell stepped over a low bush and crossed over it.
"Little Ka didn't just wander out like that. There's something here... Come and take a look..."
Aina's voice was tinged with tension and a hint of fear, and...
A hint of excitement?
Russell saw a dark shadow lying on the ground, and his heart jumped.
It looks like a person is lying there...
He strode over and, in the faint light emanating from the phone screen, saw a pale face and a pool of nearly dried blood.
Little Ka sat to the side, wagging its tail proudly.
