American forensics, but the gourmet system
Chapter 47 Pressure and Motivation
On Thursday, Russell spent the entire day writing reports.
On Friday, Russell spent the entire day revising his report.
As it was nearing the end of the workday, Russell walked into Captain Hansen's office.
"Hey, Captain." He pulled up a chair and sat down opposite Captain Hansen. "I'm not going to work tomorrow, and I'm not going to work the day after..."
This sounded a bit like a provocation, but Captain Hansen wasn't angry.
"Congratulations," Captain Hansen chuckled, rubbing his temples. "Have a nice weekend...anything going on a date?"
"Hmm...it's hard to say." Russell smiled mysteriously. "Anyway, I've finished my report, so I can comfortably enjoy a weekend."
"So it's a date." Captain Hansen nodded knowingly. "Jesse's case report will probably be finished in another day... He should still be able to make it back in time for Sunday's break."
"Only one day?!" Russell exclaimed in surprise. "When did he start writing reports so quickly?"
"I found him a helper," Captain Hansen shrugged. "We can't let Jesse waste a whole weekend writing reports..."
"What about the murder Dawn committed six years ago?" Russell asked again. "Can it overturn the conclusions reached back then?"
"I'm still fighting for it," Captain Hansen replied, his smile fading. "Right now, we only have Dawn's confession, but evidence for those two murders from back then is very hard to find... Whether the case can be overturned ultimately depends on the prosecutor's attitude."
Russell fully understood Captain Hansen's words. After all, it was a case from six years ago, and the body had long been cremated after the case was closed. The physical evidence from that time should have also been destroyed according to procedure.
It's not impossible to overturn the verdict based solely on Dawn's confession, but the chances are slim.
"No matter what, I will still insist on overturning the verdict." Captain Hansen sighed. "Those of us in this line of work, if we don't persist in pursuing the truth, we'll sooner or later become the very thing we once hated..."
Russell sensed that Captain Hansen's words had a hidden meaning, but he decided not to press the matter further.
He knew Captain Hansen's personality; he figured he was probably facing some kind of obstacle that made it difficult to overturn the murder case from six years ago.
If that's the case, even if Russell presses for details, Captain Hansen might not tell him.
"Then I'm off work, Captain," Russell said, standing up from his chair.
"have a good weekend."
Captain Hansen waved his hand at him.
Russell ran into Marty, who was dressed casually, in the elevator.
"I'm going to report you to the captain for leaving get off work early, Marty," Russell joked. "Have you finished the report?"
"Of course not," Marty said matter-of-factly. "I go to pick my daughter up from school first, and then come back to work overtime on my report. Even the team leader can't find fault with me... My daughter said she wanted to see me pick her up from school on Fridays, and I promised her."
"Your daughter must be very happy," Russell said, walking into the elevator with Marty.
For detectives like Marty, who have families and children, achieving a balance between work and life is a difficult task.
They must make certain sacrifices in some way.
"Yes, she's so excited..."
Marty stepped into the elevator, and as the doors slowly closed, he suddenly changed the subject, lowering his voice to Russell:
"Captain Hansen has been extremely worried these past few days... about overturning the convictions for the two murders Dawn committed six years ago..."
"I noticed that too." Russell stared straight at the elevator door. "When I went to find Captain Hansen just now, he said a few strange things... I don't quite understand them."
Marty's expression became mysterious:
Do you know who was in charge of those two murder cases six years ago?
"Hmm... Dr. Beckman?"
"I mean the NYPD's major crimes unit..."
"Oh, I don't know." Russell honestly shook his head.
"Scott Hudson and his men." Marty lowered his voice again, and Russell had to strain to understand him. "You know Scott Hudson, right..."
"That sounds familiar..."
"The head of the robbery squad next door, the chief inspector," Marty said, "is two ranks higher than Captain Hansen! If we overturn those two cases, it would be a serious stain on Hudson's career..."
Marty paused, then continued:
"Inspector Jeremy from our homicide squad has spoken to Captain Hansen several times these past few days. Captain Hansen is currently at a crucial point in his promotion to deputy chief inspector, and he's under a lot of pressure."
Russell finally understood what Captain Hansen meant by those seemingly nonsensical words in the office.
However, judging from Captain Hansen's statement, he seems unwilling to compromise.
"Then... is there anything we can do to help?" Russell asked Marty, frowning.
"The chances aren't great," Marty shrugged. "If you had an uncle who was a district commander or assistant chief, you might be able to get a chance."
Russell understood the implication in Marty's words:
"Is Hudson's uncle the chief?"
"Uh... no, that's not it." Marty shook his head. "Scott Hudson's brother, Nick Hudson, is a New York State Senator, chairman of the Finance Committee, and eligible to run for the next governor... you know what I mean."
Russell immediately felt that Captain Hansen's image had become much more imposing, and even his bald head seemed to shine.
"I unconditionally support the captain," Marty concluded. "Whatever decision he ultimately makes, I'll stand by him."
"Me too," Russell also stated.
……
In the apartment, a warm and inviting aroma wafted from the kitchen.
A few days ago, when I bought lamb chops, I also bought a piece of lamb leg. Today, Russell took it out of the refrigerator and made a braised lamb dish.
In the living room, Aina twitched her delicate nose as she stuffed things into her large suitcase.
"It smells so good... I think I can smell lamb..."
The cat has a sharp nose.
"It's mutton, braised mutton." Russell sat on the sofa; his luggage was already packed, consisting of only a backpack containing a few changes of clothes and a set of pajamas. "Are we only staying one night, Aina? We're not moving, are we...?"
"Of course not." Aina packed a Switch console into her suitcase. "Anyway, I rented a big car, so I can fit a lot of stuff... You can drive, right, Russell? Can we take turns driving?"
Russell felt challenged; a journey of only an hour and a half required taking turns driving?
"Absolutely not!" he waved his hand dismissively. "I can drive it myself!"
"That's great!" Aina smiled brightly. "Then I'll sit in the passenger seat and eat snacks... Look how many snacks I brought..."
