Chapter 30 Old Building and Sudden Intrusion

The red and blue police lights spun, illuminating a dark and desolate street.

Pedestrians who hadn't yet gone home turned their heads and stopped, casting curious glances at the two Ford Explorers parked on the side of the road.

The car door opened, and Russell jumped out carrying his investigation kit. Captain Hansen was already standing in front of the person who reported the incident and asking about the situation.

The caller was a young white man who looked somewhat like Tom Holland, the actor who played the third Spider-Man. Like Holland, he also had thin lips and curly blond hair, but he looked a little shaken.

"I work here..." Tom Holland pointed to the office building behind him and said, "I sometimes slack off and go to the rooftop for a smoke or something. Very few people go up there..."

"Yes, I understand."

Captain Hansen nodded, looking a little anxious, but he didn't urge Tom Holland.

"Then, you know, I have to work overtime again tonight..." Tom Holland cleared his throat, seemingly realizing he was rambling on, and quickened his pace slightly, "After dinner, I went to the rooftop again... There's an abandoned low building over there, it used to be a clothing company, and you can see it perfectly from where I was standing on the roof. I was smoking a cigarette when I suddenly noticed what looked like someone lying on the rooftop of that building..."

Tom Holland shakily took out his phone and opened the photo album:

"Look, this is a photo I took back then..."

His phone was still an iPhone 13 basic version from a few years ago. Although the environment for taking the photo was rather dark, the rooftop of another building here was about 300 meters away as the crow flies.

However, a woman's body can indeed be seen in the photo, wearing a white shirt, a straight skirt and high heels, and seemingly black stockings on her legs, but it is not very clear. She is lying face down on the edge of the roof.

Captain Hansen frowned and handed the phone to Russell.

Jesse also joined in:

"Is she wearing so little? Isn't she cold?"

"As we all know, corpses don't feel cold..." Russell handed the phone back to Tom Holland. "Which abandoned low-rise building are you talking about?"

"It should be that one..." Tom Holland pointed to the street corner, his voice trembling slightly, "Someone went in to explore before, and there were homeless people living there. Later, someone changed the door, locked it, and sealed the windows, and it's been abandoned ever since..."

"I've already contacted the neighborhood emergency services to unlock it, boss," Marty said from the side. "They won't be there for another ten minutes."

"Okay." Captain Hansen nodded, then turned to Russell. "Dr. Russell, what's your take on this? What was the approximate cause of death? If it was suicide, is it possible the victim fell from the building next door? If it was murder, is it possible the killer is still in this building?"

"I can't tell," Russell said, shaking his head. "The photo is too blurry, and it's dark at dusk, so you can't see any details... As for whether the killer is inside the building, I can only say that judging from the posture of this body, it doesn't seem like a fall from a height. Generally, the limbs of a body that has fallen from a height are usually twisted, but this body doesn't fit that description..."

"Then it's possible they were lured into the building by the murderer. This building must have some unknown entrances and exits, and the murderer might be hiding inside..." Captain Hansen immediately made a judgment. "Jesse, Marty, Diaz, the three of you go and check the doors and windows of this building to see if there are any inconspicuous entrances."

"Yes, Captain!"

The three agents immediately sprang into action.

"Me..." Holland's lips trembled as he looked at Captain Hansen. Clearly, the sudden discovery of a corpse while he was leisurely smoking had caused him considerable psychological trauma. "Should I stay here and wait?"

"You'll just wait here." Captain Hansen patted Tom Holland on the shoulder. "We might need your help later."

Based on common sense, the probability that the person who reports the crime is the murderer in a murder case is very low.

However, in reality, in a murder case, the probability that the person who reports the crime (including the first person to discover the crime at the scene) is the murderer is as high as 20%-30%.

This is a very counterintuitive statistic.

Therefore, in practice, the person who reports the crime is often the first person the police investigate.

Many people, after committing murder, will pretend to be the person who reported the crime to the police in order to reduce suspicion.

But they didn't know that the moment he dialed the police, he was brought under the police's surveillance as a suspect.

"Found it! Over here!"

Diaz's shouts could be heard from not far away.

Russell and Captain Hansen exchanged a glance and quickly walked in the direction from which the sound came.

Do you think that kid is a suspect?

After walking a dozen meters, Captain Hansen suddenly asked Russell in a low voice.

"The probability is very low..." Russell shrugged. "Unless he's a really good actor, I certainly can't pull off that kind of trembling lip micro-expression."

"I think so too." Captain Hansen glanced back at Holland, who was standing there looking lost. "Otherwise, I would have left Jesse there to watch over him... Where's the entrance, Diaz?"

"Here."

Jesse and Marty arrived as well, and the group gathered around a window that had been boarded up. Several planks had fallen off to the side, and the window frame was crooked and had fallen down. It would definitely be easy for someone to squeeze through.

"How could the deceased, wearing a straight skirt and high heels, have squeezed through this window?"

Marty raised a question.

"It's nothing, Marty," Jesse said as he climbed through the window. "We just solved a case where the victim inside was missing a leg but was still playing football... Fuck, there are so many footprints in here!"

Jesse crouched on the windowsill and looked inside through the window.

"Don't jump! Protect the scene!" Captain Hansen quickly stopped him. "We'll wait for the emergency services team to unlock the door and then go in through the front door... Marty, you guard this window in case the killer is still inside... Shoot immediately in case of an emergency, don't hesitate. Jesse, Diaz, let's go to the front door."

"No problem, boss."

Marty reached out and pressed his hand on his sidearm, then nodded solemnly.

"The building is covered in dust," Jesse said, jumping down from the windowsill. "Anyone who commits a crime here is in for a world of hurt; there will be footprints and traces everywhere..."

Russell followed, circled half of the low building, and arrived at the main entrance.

A few minutes later, the emergency services team arrived at the scene, wailing and shouting.

They belong to the NYPD's Special Operations Bureau and are equipped with a variety of professional lock-picking tools, allowing them to choose between non-destructive lock picking or professional breaching as required.

Faced with a murder case, Captain Hansen naturally ordered them to break down the structure quickly.

Faced with the hydraulic shears, the lock chain was as brittle as paper. A few seconds later, the chain fell to the ground, the door opened wide, and Jesse took the lead, drew his sidearm, turned on his tactical flashlight, and crawled into the building.

"Follow me, Russell."

Captain Hansen also drew his sidearm and gave Russell instructions.

Russell's heart pounded; it was the first time he had ever experienced something like this.

The forensic kit should be able to stop a few bullets for me, right...?

He thought to himself.
