American forensics, but the gourmet system
Chapter 18 Division of Labor and Arrest
As night falls, the third floor of the Brooklyn Criminal Investigation Center becomes even busier.
Captain Hansen stood beside the snake plant by the interrogation room door, giving orders with composure:
"Marty, Diaz, you two put aside your current theft case for now and hand it over to another team. Take the technician and head to Joey Cruz's house for a crime scene investigation. Be thorough; don't miss a single clue. Jesse, you come with me to Romo Simmons's teammate's house; he's a prime suspect. Russell, you come with us; I need to hear your detailed account of the case again."
"Yes, Captain."
Everyone agreed in unison.
Looking at the scene outside, and unable to hear what the police were saying due to the excellent soundproofing of the interrogation room, the young thief inside was already sweating profusely. He was probably desperately trying to recall what serious crime he had committed that would make these police officers so vigilant…
Russell watched as Marty and Diaz walked into the interrogation room, and the young thief's legs went weak when he stood up from his chair.
"Let's go," Captain Hansen called to Jesse and Russell. "There will definitely be traffic on the way, so let's get there as early as possible."
……
The black Ford Explorer drove out of the underground garage and silently swam into the night like a shark.
Jesse was driving, and like Captain Hansen in the passenger seat, he was wearing an agent's uniform.
Russell sat in the back row, still pondering the possibilities of the case.
"So...twins have exactly the same DNA?"
Jesse asked as he drove.
"That's one way to put it." Russell nodded. "Identical twins develop from the same fertilized egg. Excluding methylation differences induced by the environment, their DNA is indeed 100% identical from a criminal investigation perspective."
Jesse gave a vague "Oh," and then asked:
"But I'm a little confused. If Romo and Joey are twins, how can DNA testing determine whose leg it is?"
"Good question," Russell said calmly. "Based on my observations during my autopsy of Joey, his limbs were intact after he fell from the building."
"Oh, f***ing." Jesse, one hand on the steering wheel, slapped his forehead with the other. "I completely forgot about that..."
"So the broken leg belonged to Romo, which suggests Romo may have been murdered two years ago," Captain Hansen concluded. "Then the person who rented the house from Mr. Clarkson in Romo's name and played football in Romo's place could be...
"It might be Joey. As Romo's twin brother, Joey lived in the world for a year and a half in Romo's name until seven months ago, when something happened to Joey that made it impossible for him to live in Romo's name anymore, so he decided to disappear from the world," Russell added.
"That greatly increases Joey's suspicion in Romo's murder case..." Captain Hansen said, frowning. "He and Romo are twin brothers. Unless there's a deep-seated hatred, I don't think he would have gone so far as to kill Romo..."
"This requires questioning Carey Rupert at the detention center... Remember? He wouldn't say a word about his motive for killing Joey. Is it possible that he was deeply involved in the deaths of Romo and Joey?" Russell continued to speculate.
Captain Hansen said calmly:
"At this time, the correctional bureau won't approve our interrogation of the criminal, and I also need to submit an interrogation application to my superiors..."
"Inefficient..." Russell thought to himself.
"It's also possible that the witness we're about to interview is lying." Jesse seemed to have grasped the connections in the case as well. He added, "Mr. Clarkson has never met Romo, so he naturally doesn't know if the person he's contacting online is Romo himself. If the witness is lying, trying to mislead our investigation by saying that Romo, who disappeared two years ago, disappeared seven months ago, then that witness is the prime suspect."
Captain Hansen cleared his throat and gave his final summary:
"In short, based on the clues we have so far, the main suspects are the witness and Joey. Kerry Rupert, who killed Joey, is also a suspect. We need to investigate each clue one by one, and we also need to find Romo's body… Frankly, this is the most complex case I've encountered in my twenty-five years as a police officer. Our mission is daunting…"
The car was quiet for a moment.
Suddenly, Jesse spoke up and asked:
"Is it possible that the case closure report after the crime is solved is also the most complex part?"
Captain Hansen nodded:
"Hmm... very likely."
Jesse slammed his fist on the steering wheel, his expression one of utter agony.
……
New York traffic is quite cooperative these days; a 30-minute drive took them only 50 minutes to reach their destination.
"Another detached house?" Jesse grumbled as he parked the car. "Are these amateur players all rich?"
"Maybe so." Captain Hansen unbuckled his seatbelt, opened the car door, and got out as he spoke. "In New York, cultivating a long-term passion for sports is no cheap thing."
Russell wholeheartedly agreed.
Of course, the economic cost of participating in sports is not high, and most people with regular jobs can afford it.
However, the time cost of participating in sports and amateur training is unaffordable for ordinary people.
In New York, many ordinary people enjoy sports while studying, but once they start working, they need to repay a considerable amount of student loans every month, pay at least $1000 in rent, and pay bills for electricity, water, and various taxes...
Those passions for sports will soon be crushed by the pressures of real life.
Russell followed Captain Hansen out of the car, his nose twitching and his brow furrowing.
"It smells like marijuana..."
Captain Hansen had obviously smelled it too.
"The consequences of legalizing marijuana," he said dismissively, "are that everyone hiding in their bedrooms smoking that stuff...that's probably what politicians want."
Captain Hansen strode up the steps to the front of a house, with Russell and Jesse following behind him.
The lights on the second floor were still on.
Captain Hansen raised his hand and rang the doorbell.
Who is it?
A wary, slightly flustered voice came from upstairs.
Russell noticed that after hearing the reply from inside the house, Captain Hansen's right hand had instinctively reached for the pistol at his waist.
"Are you Mr. Johnny Caruso? We're from the NYPD..."
"Bang!"
Before Captain Hansen could finish speaking, a heavy thud, like a heavy object falling to the ground, suddenly came from the side and back of the house.
"He jumped out of the window and escaped!"
Captain Hansen swiftly drew his sidearm and leaped nimbly down the steps. But Jesse was faster, charging towards the source of the sound like a lithe black panther.
"Don't run! Stop right there! Or I'll shoot!"
Jesse's shouts came from inside.
Russell shrank back.
This was his first time experiencing an arrest firsthand, and he decided to go back to his car to hide for a while, just in case the bullets didn't have eyes.
