Chapter 7 Divine Favor Ritual
Luca quickly suppressed his surging emotions and forced himself to remain calm, saying, "I can't believe your side of the story. As far as I know, Paul isn't in Dawntown right now, or even Castile."
Pharos nodded. "I know, so I've prepared something else. Could you please give me a pencil and a drawing board?"
Luca gestured for the maid to fetch it.
In his previous life, Pharos was a genuine art student, and he was quite skilled at sketching.
"I learned a little about portraiture from Detective Simon, so we compiled a list of the people Paul remembered, and there was one gentleman who I think was rather special."
Pharos picked up a pencil and began sketching on the drawing board. He finished the portrait in just fifteen minutes, making it about 7% similar to the original, and then stopped.
Luca's expression grew increasingly grim as he looked at the scene, and before he knew it, his hands were clenched into fists, trembling slightly.
The person in the picture looks exactly like Luca Moretti.
"This person might be very important to you..." Pharos was interrupted before he could ask.
"Enzo Moretti is my eldest son. He is studying at a magic university in Moonshadow City. A few days ago, he said that strange things had happened around him and asked for someone to protect him on his way back to Dawn Town," Luca said with an extremely grim expression.
Pharos nodded and recalled:
"Their vehicle was attacked in the woods near Castile, and thankfully, I did not see Enzo die."
"Do you have the exact location?" Luca handed over a map.
Based on his memory, Pharos circled a zone on the map: "It's roughly around this location."
"So, Paul is clinging to my father to warn us that Enzo is in danger?" Luca said, his voice trembling with emotion, struggling to maintain his last shred of composure. "Why are you telling us this? What good does it do you?"
Everyone treats the Mafia like the plague, but this young man is eager to get close to them. What's his purpose?
"I am not aware of the conflicts between your gangs, nor do I care, but Miss Serena and I are classmates, and it is only right that we help each other."
Pharos spoke righteously, emphasizing the importance of mutual help.
Miss Crow chuckled again, "You're quite clever, aren't you? You can lie so easily."
She greatly admired Pharos's ability to lie without batting an eye.
"Is that why Detective Simon didn't come, but you did?" Luca asked.
Pharos nodded.
Luca slumped onto the sofa, his eyes vacant, his voice tinged with weariness.
"Mr. Faros, as long as the news is confirmed, whether Enzo is still alive or not, you are my friend, Luca Moretti."
At Luca's nod, the Moretti Manor sounded its emergency assembly alarm in the middle of the night.
Having finally finished his task, Pharos relaxed, though his mental state was extremely poor.
Pharos felt that directly asking for money lowered his overall stature.
There are many ways to gain friendships, and that's the right approach.
Luca reported the situation to Godfather Lorenzo, and the entire manor bustled with activity, as if they had already forgotten about the "culprit."
Pharos sat alone on the sofa, dozing off wearily.
If no one paid attention to him, he would probably have slept like that until the next morning. Fortunately, after about ten minutes, someone finally found him.
…………
In the early morning, after the rain, the dawn mist obscured the distant view, and the thorns and iron railings of the fence were covered with dew. The fog had risen.
The air is finally free from the dusty smell of the factory. The affluent areas are slightly better in this respect, where people can enjoy the long-lost fresh air.
The manor remained busy, and almost everyone in the Moretti family stayed up all night.
"Are you awake, Pharos? Did you have a good night's sleep?" As expected, Miss Raven started nagging when she saw Pharos's eyelids twitch slightly.
Every day is like this.
She had no one to talk to at night, and during the day, if she didn't call out "Pharos, Pharos..." for even a moment, she seemed to be in distress.
"Good morning, Miss Raven... Ahm..." Pharos was used to it, opened his mouth and yawned, his nostrils filled with the scent of lavender.
As I was about to get up, I realized that I was covered with a soft blanket.
"Hehe, guess who thoughtfully covered you with a blanket?" Miss Crow chuckled mischievously.
"It's not you anyway."
"That's right! It's Miss Serena! I dare say, missing her in her pajamas is your biggest loss this year. As her admirer, you're going to have a relatively unsuccessful life."
Miss Crow puffed out her chest and flaunted her colorful black feathers.
"God, who told you I like her?" Pharos protested against Miss Raven's matchmaking.
Miss Crow changed the subject: "But it's okay, as long as you help me get my body back, this Miss Crow will reluctantly wear a nightgown for you just once."
Good grief, they've been waiting for me here. Who wants to see a crow in pajamas?
Pharos's eye twitched.
After waking up, he felt a bit of a headache. How did he end up falling asleep without even realizing it?
This is the first time I've stayed out all night, and I'm going to get another lecture from my aunt.
The original owner was quite afraid of his aunt, and by extension, the current owner of Pharos is also afraid of her.
I rubbed my eyes and found that the maid was already waiting at the door, with toiletries prepared.
"I'm so sorry, Mr. Pharos. Miss saw you were too tired yesterday and asked us not to wake you. Did you sleep well last night?"
"not bad."
After washing his face, Pharos checked the time: 7:13.
There's still plenty of time before class starts at 9 o'clock.
"If you're not in a hurry to go back, you can go to the backyard and have breakfast with the young lady," the maid suggested.
Faros certainly had no reason to refuse, after all, this was the very reason he returned to Moretti's house.
Make a good impression, then take credit.
Villa courtyard.
Unlike other noble ladies, Serena's mornings had nothing to do with being a lady.
Miss Serena wore a neat high ponytail, a red shirt with the sleeves half-rolled up, tight riding breeches, and high-top leather boots, and was practicing swordsmanship with a cross-shaped longsword in her hand.
Flames of black and blue intertwined shimmered on the longsword.
"Swords and magic?"
Pharos frowned; this was a bit beyond the scope of what a grassroots person like Pharos could handle.
In fact, since he traveled half a month ago, he has hardly seen any other magic besides Detective Simon's exorcism magic.
Even at the Holy College, lecturers only taught some theoretical basics.
Miss Crow explained:
"You didn't know, did you? In this world, to use magic, you must obtain a profession through a 'divine favor ritual.' And for ordinary people, there are only three paths to participate in this 'divine favor ritual' for obtaining a profession."
First, one must convert to the church, which will provide outstanding individuals with a "divine favor ceremony."
Secondly, if a student excels in the graduation exam, the magic university will help them complete the "divine blessing ritual."
Third, it involves spending money—a lot of money—to hire people from the church or academy to conduct the "divine favor ceremony."
Pharos understood. Miss Serena had neither completed her exams nor become a priestess, so the only possibility was the third one.
"What are the benefits of completing the 'divine favor ritual' ahead of time?" Pharos pressed.
Pharos felt that with Miss Serena's grades, there was absolutely no need for her to spend money to change jobs, so what was the point of the Moretti family spending this money?
Miss Crow affirmed:
"Of course! The earlier you complete the 'Divine Blessing Ritual,' the higher your proficiency in using magic will be. Moreover, after changing jobs, the growth rate and growth limit of your attribute panel will experience a qualitative leap, which will give you a greater advantage when applying to better magic universities."
"There's a growth ceiling for people who haven't changed jobs?" Pharos was astonished.
"Of course, with each point added, before awakening, each person's total stats can only reach a maximum of 30 to 40 points."
This is the difference between those favored by the gods and ordinary people; besides the advantages of their profession and magic, there is also the astonishing difference in their numerical limits.
"So ordinary people and rich people are never even on the same starting line?"
"When did you develop the misconception that ordinary people and rich people are on the same starting line?"
