Chapter 55 Past Events of Dawn Town

The morning temperature is the lowest of the day.

Chenxi Town is located by the sea, so the air is quite humid and hot.

The new factory manager, Charles, was already waiting in his office early in the morning.

He was under 50 years old, with the slightly overweight physique that middle-aged men inevitably have. His hair was jet black and thick, but it was too concentrated on the sides, leaving the middle sparse and bald, as if it had been coated with wax.

Under the sunlight, the reflection was particularly dazzling.

He had just been promoted to factory director and was in the prime of his life. He licked his lower lip, reminiscing about the still-charming and beautiful woman from yesterday.

At that moment, a young man barged straight into the office.

"Father, I've already had someone investigate Mrs. Hastings."

The young man was a typical Rune, with a forced smile, jet-black hair, habitually half-closed eyes, and an unconsciously forward-leaning chin.

"Oh, Charlie's here! How did it go, my good son?" Charles said excitedly.

"The woman's husband, Anthony Hastings, is just a small-time lawyer. Although he graduated from Castile Academy of Magic, he is ultimately an office worker. His connections are mostly based on mutual benefit and are unlikely to pose a threat to our family."

Charlie pulled a pretty and lively photo of a young girl from his pocket. "This is their daughter."

Charles excitedly took it, his eyes lighting up: "They even have a daughter! Oh my, she's so beautiful and sweet!"

"They're short of money. If we promise enough benefits, we might even get to enjoy a mother-daughter co-serving session," Charlie added. "Dad, I only have one request."

Tell me about it!

"I don't care about that old aunt Anna, but I want her daughter's virginity!"

"Whatever my son says goes," Charles thought smugly. "Hehe, lovely Anna, this time, I'm going to have the Hastings family all to myself."

Charles, of course, would not refuse. He was able to get all of this thanks to his all-powerful Mafia son, who had somehow managed to get in touch with the eldest son of the Corleone family.

"Keep up the good work, Dad. You were right to increase working hours this time. The Corleone family needs to reduce costs and increase efficiency. Once we've earned enough profit for the family, we can play with whichever woman we want in Dawntown."

"That's right, high wages discourage the poor from striving. I think everyone should work 12 hours a day!" Charles said, his eyes crinkling with laughter as he held a cigarette between his fingers.

The father and son sang in unison.

Charlie felt a surge of relief.

Being a gangster is all about being domineering. The best thing he ever did was become friends with that young master.

As long as he doesn't provoke the church, he can control anyone in the entire Dawn Town.

Just then, there was a knock at the door. Charlie said with annoyance, "Who is it?"

A voice came from outside the door: "Mr. Factory Manager, it's Young Master Roman Corleone who wants to see you."

Upon hearing this, both father and son were taken aback.

Charlie exclaimed excitedly, "Dad! They must have heard about your amazing cost-cutting and efficiency-enhancing methods and come to reward you! Father, you absolutely must do your best!"

"Don't worry, son. Don't you know what kind of person your old man is?"

"Dad, what brilliant idea do you have?"

"All workers should keep working! It's their blessing!"

A moment later, the waiter led the two to the reception room.

Strangely, neither the father nor the son saw young master Roman in the reception room.

The curtains in the reception room were tightly drawn, making the room dim. A ray of morning light pierced through the curtains, reflecting a cold glint.

Before me stood a young man with brown hair, sitting on the sofa with his legs crossed, his piercing gaze chilling to the bone.

Charles was about to question who this person was when he suddenly heard the door behind him slam shut with a "bang".

Then, the sound of the doorknob locking from the inside came from behind...

…………

The big blue and white dog started playing with the yarn balls from the textile factory all by itself.

Roman did not follow them into the meeting room, but was instead asked by Faros to tour the factory area.

Roman was actually quite happy when the Corleone family decided to hand over the factory to him.

He had visited once before; it was a fairly good textile factory, not inferior even by the standards of the entire empire.

The workers here used to be full of enthusiasm, but today, Roman sees lazy, undisciplined, and distracted workers.

"Would you like a tour, Mr. Roman?" A chestnut-haired girl asked from the factory area.

"Who are you?" Roman asked.

"I am Ms. Anna's apprentice, my name is Sophia." Sophia led the way.

"When did they become like this?" Roman was somewhat dissatisfied. "The economy isn't good right now, and the Corleone family provides them with jobs, so why are they so lazy?"

"Yes, Master Roman, we have worked very hard, but how could we dare to expect you to understand us?" Sophia met Roman's gaze without flinching.

"..." Roman hesitated, wanting to say something but stopping himself.

"Do you know why the Empire wants to shorten working hours?" Sophia asked again.

"I don't know." Roman had hardly ever paid attention to this aspect.

He was a young master, who had grown up in a pampered environment since birth.

"Because this was all bought with the blood of countless laborers of the Empire." Sophia's gaze was sharp, her tone slightly somber:

"If you want to turn everything back to the 12-hour workday of the industrial era, that's fine. The economy is bad now, so the workers in Dawn Town are naturally angry but dare not speak out. Perhaps they can swallow their anger for the time being in order to make a living, but all their slacking off and procrastination are a silent form of resistance."

Roman fell silent; he had never considered such a thing before.

"Have you ever experienced a factory?" Sofia asked again.

"no."

"Hmph~" Sophia sneered. "Yes, you're a young master, so naturally you wouldn't care about the children in the East District."

"After several years of golden development, we people in the East District can read more or less. They are forced to live in factories, and their eyes never have any glimmer of hope. Most of them are not mediocre people who cannot use magic. They are knowledgeable and have ideas, but the times have trapped them here."

"They had experienced the Empire's former glory. In the past, every Imperial citizen could proudly boast: The Empire is sacred, and we fight to spread the faith of the Lord to all people in the world. But that statement is outdated. We worked hard to build a powerful Empire, but a powerful Empire has not brought us hope."

"They are desperate people, people who live in the abyss. Now they see clearly that their voices will never be answered, and they realize that a lose-lose situation is better than a win-lose situation."

Upon hearing this, Roman felt a mix of emotions.

The voices attracted many workers from the surrounding area to come and watch.

"Weren't your Corleone family also once inhabitants of this abyss?"

Just then, an older woman said, her voice choked with emotion, "Have you all forgotten that the Corleone family... became one of the leaders of Dawn Town because we, the people of the old East District, voted for them one by one?"

Many newborns in Dawntown now believe that the five major gangs are families with deep roots and powerful connections.

But that's not the case.

More than a decade ago, when the saintess apostasy and the empire had just abandoned Dawntown.

The order was chaotic, the church was powerless, and there were no five major gangs at that time.

Initially, the so-called Corleone, Moretti... were just ordinary residents who gained a certain prestige due to certain events and were chosen as the leaders of the entire neighborhood.

During this period of order restructuring, the major gangs continuously devoured other smaller gangs, eventually leading to the current five major families.
