Chapter 31 Detective Simon's Request
"Detective Simon??"
Pharos stared wide-eyed at the white figure whose face had been stripped away.
He even had the illusion that Detective Simon was still alive.
The detective used to like standing at the window and looking outside, as if he was staring at something for a long time.
Night had fallen over the city, and the sky was a deep, dark blue.
The sun had already set. Castile, a port city located in the eastern part of the empire, had no sunsets, but it had decent sunrises and dawns, hence the name Dawn Town.
The red brick building was unusually dark as it lacked gas lamps. Pharos walked up the wooden stairs.
Sure enough, I found the key under the carpet, just as I remembered.
The detective agency was kicked open by Faros earlier, probably because Miss Christina paid for a sturdier lock herself.
Apparently in memory of her deceased brother, the entire building at 21 Baker Street was bought, so Miss Christina is technically the landlord here.
Upon opening the door, the living room remained unchanged. Unlike the first time they forcibly broke in, the white vengeful spirit, who had been staring blankly in the bedroom, was now sitting on the sofa.
"Good evening, how have you been lately, Pharos?" The detective didn't look at Pharos, leaving behind a silhouette with his legs crossed.
"The boss?" Pharos was astonished.
This was the first time he had encountered a talking, intelligent vengeful spirit, which completely overturned Pharos's common sense.
"Don't be nervous, this is special between us." The vengeful spirit said calmly, white breath coming out of his mouth as if he were smoking a pipe. "Only powerful 'spirits' can maintain their sanity after death, including you, Pharos. If you die one day, you can wander in the mortal world for 7 days, just like me."
"I'm sorry... Boss! It's my fault. I didn't listen to you, and that's why..." Pharos said, his eyes welling up with tears. He finally had a chance to apologize to Detective Simon.
The consequences are already evident, and he will not make any excuses for his mistakes, but it is Detective Simon who pays the price.
"This is my retribution, you don't need to blame yourself." Detective Simon recalled the turmoil of 10 years ago, "Chris thought the same thing."
"Miss Christina?" Pharos frowned.
The "proxy" lady did not make things difficult for him at all; in fact, she treated him fairly and showed no intention of making things difficult. It turned out that she and Detective Simon had already communicated beforehand.
"Congratulations on your successful job change, Pharos. You are now a Holy Sword Wielder," said Detective Simon.
Pharos was somewhat puzzled.
How did Detective Simon know that I had already completed the "divine blessing ritual"?
But I immediately guessed that Miss Christina must have used some means to be able to chat with the detective.
"Yes, it's all thanks to Miss Christina, a powerful, magnanimous, and admirable representative," Pharos said sincerely.
"Hehe...you're wrong about Pharos. She's a timid, vain woman who likes to act cool but isn't very capable. Don't be fooled by her appearance." Detective Simon couldn't help but laugh out loud.
Miss Crow said cheerfully:
"What did I say to Falros? Rich girls are all pretentious, two-faced. The ones who know them best are their families."
Pharos silently agreed.
He suddenly became curious and wanted to keep listening, so he didn't interrupt Simon.
"Don't let her glamorous life in Castile fool you. She and I were both exiled to this city," Detective Simon said calmly, uttering words that shattered all conventional wisdom.
The powerful "agent" was actually exiled?
Pharos and the crow were dumbfounded.
Realizing things weren't so simple, he immediately asked, "So what do you want from me?"
Did Detective Simon call him in just to chat?
Obviously not. The other party must have something they haven't finished doing and is asking me for a favor.
Instead of getting straight to the point, Detective Simon brought up a past event.
"Do you remember the great upheaval in Moon Shadow City?"
How could Pharos not know that almost all of the original owner's memories since he could remember were fragmented, except for the turmoil in Moon Shadow City, which was exceptionally clear.
But he was young at the time and only knew that many people had died and the whole city was engulfed in flames. In order to survive, he jumped into the lake.
That day... there was no sun or moon in the sky, because the sun and moon had sunk to the bottom of the lake.
Finally, the beneficiaries of the turmoil banded together to form the "Academy Faction" of Moonshadow City, which in turn made the "Academy Faction" one of the strongest forces in the empire.
Detective Simon continued:
"The Wayne family took the wrong side before that turmoil and was thoroughly purged afterwards. Chris and I had already been knighted at that time and should have fought for our family, but we escaped and went into hiding in this harsh town."
Pharos understood. No wonder Detective Simon kept saying it was retribution; he had been repenting for his cowardice ten years ago.
But when faced with life and death, who can guarantee their continued loyalty?
"Later, Chris joined the church. Her outstanding talent made her an 'Agent.' In order to protect this rare talent, the church reached a consensus with the 'Academy.' First, Christina must not leave Dawntown unless absolutely necessary; second, neither the 'Academy' nor the 'Church's' influence is allowed to infiltrate Dawntown."
"I see. No wonder a small place like Dawn Town can have resident agents." Pharos suddenly realized.
"But unfortunately, it seems things aren't over yet," Detective Simon sighed.
"How so?"
"Chris's congenital defect has been exposed. Her 'spirit' is congenitally disabled, and once attacked, she will suffer several times the damage of an ordinary person... And this time, the white giant's vengeful spirit attack was obviously aimed at her."
"That white giant... is he from the 'academic school'?"
"It's hard to say, but it's clear that the other party had a strong purpose. They first killed me, who had the means to control vengeful spirits, and then deliberately lured Chris out to kill him. There is no doubt that this was a 'murder'... but I have no evidence."
As soon as he finished speaking, Detective Simon's vengeful spirit seemed to tremble and twist violently, like a television signal malfunctioning.
Faros clearly sensed that Detective Simon's "spirit" was visibly weakening, a sign that his obsession had faded and he had no regrets.
Pharos asked urgently, fearing the vengeful spirit would vanish in the next second: "Do you need me to find evidence that they murdered Miss Christina?"
If evidence is found, the church will have a reason to intervene in Dawntown to protect Christina.
All problems were easily solved.
"No... since they've deployed a demon, it means they're aiming to kill two or even three birds with one stone. I'm not interested in anything else," Detective Simon said, almost pleadingly.
"Chris will find the evidence herself, and I believe she can handle the crisis, but until then, I hope you can stay by Christina's side and look for an opportunity."
"Chance?"
"This opportunity won't be long, as early as 7 days... at the latest a month. Something big will happen in Dawntown and even Castile, and at that time, I need your help."
"Help?" Pharos was slightly taken aback.
What will happen a month from now? Detective Simon can already see that far into the future?
He was in a dilemma. He was just a "fake mage" who didn't even have a holy sword. What could he do to help?
