Chapter 539 Swallowing Everyone
Zhou Lang glanced back. In the distant firelight, the stitched-up corpse demon was still burning, but it hadn't fallen. It was slowly walking this way.
Zhou Lang turned around and followed the group into the underground.
The iron gate closed behind him.
Darkness engulfed everyone.
You can't see anything in the stairwell.
Someone turned on a flashlight, and the beam shone on the gray concrete wall, revealing patches of water stains and mold.
"There are three underground levels in total," Li Feng said as they walked. "The core is on the lowest level. Let's try not to linger and go straight to the bottom."
"Where is that Ghost King?" the bald man asked.
"The intelligence says the Ghost King is guarding the core area," Li Feng said. "We'll figure something out then."
Zhou Lang thought to himself, "Is this your plan? You'll figure something out later?"
He suddenly regretted coming.
The stairs were long; it took about five minutes to descend to the basement level. The word "B1" was painted in red on the iron gate.
Li Feng pushed open the door and peeked inside.
"Safety."
The basement level was a warehouse, piled high with rusted equipment and parts. The passageways were so narrow that only two people could walk side by side.
"Keep formation." Li Feng led the way.
Zhou Lang followed in the middle. He noticed that the woman in the white coat was always at the back of the group, gripping her scalpel tightly, but her expression was calm.
"Are you a doctor?" Zhou Lang asked, turning around.
"Veterinarian," the woman said.
"……oh."
The group quietly made their way through the underground level. They encountered no ghosts or traps. It went almost unnaturally smoothly.
"It's too quiet," Zhao Qiang said softly.
Zhou Lang also sensed something was wrong. According to the intelligence he had purchased, there should be low-level ghosts patrolling the basement. But there wasn't a single one.
Either the intelligence was wrong, or—
"They were all called up there," Zhou Lang said.
Zhao Qiang glanced at him: "What do you mean?"
"With over fifty people causing such a commotion up there, the ghosts will definitely prioritize dealing with the intruders. The underground defenses have been redeployed."
Zhao Qiang thought for a moment: "Isn't that a good thing?"
"I don't know," Zhou Lang said. "It could be a trap."
He pondered to himself. If all the ghosts and monsters underground had gone up, the path to the core would be much easier. But the problem was, the Ghost King was still there.
A four-star ghost.
Can ten people defeat them?
The answer is most likely no.
Zhou Lang secretly glanced at Li Feng's back. The young officer walked steadily, holding a military dagger in his hand, the blade engraved with strange runes. It was probably a ghost weapon.
"What's his skill level?" Zhou Lang asked Zhao Qiang in a whispered voice.
"I heard he cleared two A-rank dungeons," Zhao Qiang replied in a low voice.
Two A-rank dungeons. That's definitely expert level. But is it enough to face a four-star Demon King?
Zhou Lang touched the cane in his pocket, feeling uncertain.
We've arrived at the iron gate on the second basement level.
Li Feng reached out to push the door open.
The door didn't move.
He pushed it again, but it still didn't move.
"Locked?" The bald man stepped forward.
"It's not locked," Li Feng said, taking a step back. "It's blocked from the inside."
The ten people looked at each other in bewilderment.
"Shall I do it?" The bald man rolled up his sleeves, the chains on his arms clanging like metal.
"Wait a minute," Zhou Lang said.
Everyone looked at him.
Zhou Lang squatted down and pressed his ear against the door.
There was a sound coming from the other side of the door.
It was very light. It felt like something was being dragged on the ground.
There were also breathing sounds. But they weren't human breathing.
"There's something behind the door," Zhou Lang said, standing up. "And more than one."
Li Feng frowned: "Are you sure?"
"My hearing is good," Zhou Lang said. He didn't mention the bandaged man. The bandaged man had just said something in his mind—"There are three alive and two dead behind the door."
What were the three alive ones, and what were the two dead ones? Zhou Lang wasn't sure. But the bandaged man wouldn't lie to him.
"What should we do?" someone in the group asked, their voice trembling slightly.
Li Feng thought for a few seconds: "A strong attack."
"Wait a minute," Zhou Lang stopped him. "Let me try first."
He took a defensive talisman out of his backpack and stuck it on the door.
"What are you doing?" Li Feng asked.
"This is a defensive talisman; it can block one attack," Zhou Lang said. "If I open the door and something inside rushes out, the talisman can hold it off for a moment, giving us time to react."
Li Feng glanced at the talisman and nodded: "Okay."
Zhou Lang pulled out the chainsaw again and turned it on. The buzzing sound of the motor echoed in the stairwell.
"Are you ready?"
The men behind them drew their weapons: the bald man's chain, the veterinarian's scalpel, Zhao Qiang's iron pipe, and Li Feng's military dagger.
"Three, two, one."
Zhou Lang kicked the door.
The door swung open violently. The defensive talisman flashed—then exploded.
A grayish-white arm stretched out from inside the door, but the entire arm was bounced back by the recoil of the talisman.
"superior!"
Zhou Lang rushed in, chainsaw in hand.
The second basement level was more spacious than the first. The beam of a flashlight illuminated the interior.
Three stitched-up corpse demons.
They were a size smaller than the one above, about two meters tall. They stood in the middle of the passage, all six eyes fixed on the person rushing in.
At their feet lay two corpses, dressed in camouflage.
"It's the previous reconnaissance team." Li Feng's voice changed.
Zhou Lang didn't have time to worry about that. The nearest stitched-up corpse demon had already pounced on him.
He dodged the first grab by sidestepping, then swung the chainsaw upwards, severing one of the man's arms.
Black liquid spurted out, emitting an extremely foul stench.
The stitched-up corpse demon felt no pain. With one arm severed, it continued its forward lunge.
"Fire!" Zhou Lang shouted.
But his oil lamp had already been used up.
"Here you go!" Zhao Qiang threw a lighter and a bottle of something from behind.
Zhou Lang caught it and looked at it—it was alcohol.
He twisted off the bottle cap, poured the entire bottle over the stitched-up corpse demon in front of him, then lit a lighter and threw it at it.
With a loud "boom," the stitched-up corpse demon transformed into a human of fire. It screamed as it staggered backward, crashing into another one behind it.
The two became entangled, and the fire spread to the second one.
"There's one more!"
The third stitched corpse demon did not charge at Zhou Lang, but instead pounced towards the rear of the group.
The female veterinarian calmly took a step back, the scalpel tracing an arc in the air.
With a flash of light, one of the stitched-up corpse demon's arms was severed.
But it still has five.
The bald man swung his chain, wrapping it around the waist of the third creature. This time it couldn't break free; the chain tightened, binding it tightly.
"Fire! Does anyone have any fire left?" the bald man shouted.
Li Feng pulled a signal flare from his waist, pulled the pin, and stuffed it into the open mouth of the stitched-up corpse demon.
"Bang!"
Red flames erupted from the stitched-up corpse demon's body. It convulsed a few times and collapsed to the ground.
The second basement level became quiet.
All three stitched corpse demons collapsed to the ground, flames still burning on their bodies.
But Zhou Lang knew they would come back to life.
"Let's go," he said. "Let's go quickly. Don't wait for them to get back on their feet."
The five groups didn't stop and headed straight to the third basement level.
On the way, Zhou Lang took a headcount. Ten people, one was missing. A man who was running at the very back had been grabbed by the Stitched Corpse Demon in the chaos. By the time they realized what had happened, he had already been dragged into the darkness.
