Chapter 322 Nothing
"There's something unusual fifteen meters ahead," Lu Yuan said in a low voice. "A biological reaction... no, not a biological one. It's an energy fluctuation, and it's very strong."
Zhou Lang raised his hand to signal them to stop.
He lit the oil lamp.
A green halo spread out, illuminating the passageway ahead—empty. Nothing there.
But the flame of the oil lamp was shaking violently, and the wick was hissing slightly, as if warning something.
"Don't move," Zhou Lang said in a low voice.
The ground began to shake.
It wasn't an earthquake, it was the sound of footsteps. Extremely heavy footsteps came from the depths of the passage, one step at a time, and with each step, a crack appeared in the stone slab beneath their feet.
A figure slowly emerged from the green light.
It was over three meters tall, its body pieced together from broken stones, each stone engraved with an eye pattern. It had no face; its head was replaced by a swirling cloud of black mist.
Lu Yuan's detection device went beeping like crazy, and then—snap, it burned up.
"What the hell?" Xiong Batian gripped his iron axe tightly.
Zhou Lang stared at the thing for two seconds.
He did something no one expected: he raised the oil lamp and took a step toward the three-meter-tall stone statue.
"Hey," he called out.
The stone statue stopped. The black mist around its head turned towards him.
Zhou Lang spoke, his voice neither too loud nor too soft: "Did you choose this look yourself, or was it like this when you were buried?"
The air seemed to freeze—not a figure of speech, but the temperature had genuinely dropped several degrees, and everyone's breath turned into white mist.
The black mist surrounding the stone statue suddenly expanded.
"Scatter!" Zhou Lang roared.
The very instant he shouted, the statue threw a punch. The punch slammed into the passageway wall, shattering the entire stone wall into dust, sending fragments flying everywhere.
Shen Wei was the closest.
A piece of gravel the size of a washbasin flew straight at the back of her head. Xiong Batian reacted quickly, splitting the gravel with an axe and pulling Shen Wei back three steps.
"This thing is really hard!" Xiong Batian cursed as he looked at the nick on the axe blade.
Zhou Lang had already created some distance, and the green light of the oil lamp shone on the stone statue. He noticed something—some of the eye patterns on the statue blinked slightly under the green light.
"Lu Yuan, is there any other information on the torn page?"
That's all, just one sentence!
"Can your detector still be repaired?"
"It's burned through; it can't be repaired."
The stone statue took another step, and the ground cracked again.
Zhou Lang gritted his teeth and grabbed the chainsaw.
The roar of the motor was amplified several times in the passageway, making people's eardrums ache. He rushed forward and slashed at the statue's knee.
Sparks flew the instant the chainsaw struck the stone statue, and Zhou Lang's arm went numb from the recoil, but a slit was indeed cut into the statue's knee.
Light seeped from the crack—not green, not white, but an indescribable color, somewhere between gold and gray.
The stone statue let out a low growl, like rocks rubbing against each other. It looked down at its knees, then looked up at Zhou Lang.
Then it did something strange.
It took a step back.
They took another step back.
In the black mist, the lines on the closed eyes cracked open, revealing a new layer of stone beneath. The statue turned and walked heavily into the depths of the passage, with each step causing debris to fall from its body.
"It...is gone?" Zhao Qiang couldn't believe it.
"It didn't leave." Zhou Lang stared in the direction the stone statue had disappeared. "It was the cut I made that made it feel pain."
"Does the stone feel pain?"
"Who told you that was a stone?"
No one responded.
The procession continued forward.
But after walking less than two hundred meters, the passage split into three paths, each extending downwards, so dark that the bottom could not be seen.
Zhou Lang squatted down and touched the ground with his hand. The ground temperatures of the three paths were different—the left side was icy cold, the middle was at room temperature, and the right side was slightly warm.
"Go to the right."
"Why?" Lu Yuan asked.
"Only living things have warmth."
This statement would be common sense in other contexts, but in a cemetery where inhuman beings are buried, it takes on a chilling meaning.
They chose the road on the right.
Then he went to hell.
At the end of the passage was a huge domed hall filled with coffins. These weren't ordinary coffins—each one was transparent, containing various shapes and forms… Some resembled humans but had extra arms, some resembled beasts but had human faces, and some were completely unrecognizable, their entire bodies twisted together.
They all had their eyes closed.
"Don't make a sound." Zhou Lang's voice was kept as low as it could go.
But it was too late.
Shen Wei stepped on a loose floor tile.
It clicked, a sharp, jarring sound.
All the transparent coffins in the domed hall lit up simultaneously. One by one, the eyes of those "things" opened.
Shen Wei's face turned deathly pale. She instinctively stepped back, bumping into Han Yingying.
"Don't run," Zhou Lang said. "Even if they wake up, they might not come out."
Before he could finish speaking, the nearest coffin cracked open.
The crack split open in the middle, and the thing inside stretched out a hand—six fingers, each with an eyeball the size of a fingernail at its tip.
"Okay," Zhou Lang changed his mind, "run."
The six men took off and rushed forward.
The domed hall has another exit, on the opposite wall. It's about eighty meters away, and the middle section is filled with coffins.
More coffins began to crack.
Xiong Batian ran at the very back, his iron axe held horizontally in front of him, severing the arms that lunged at him one by one. Even after the arms were severed, they continued to crawl on the ground, their eyeballs rolling around on their fingertips.
"What the hell is all this stuff?!" Xiong Batian roared.
As Lu Yuan ran, he rummaged through his backpack and pulled out a flashbang. "Close your eyes!"
A loud bang was followed by an explosion of white light.
All the eyes in the domed hall closed simultaneously, and the arms that had been extended from the coffins retracted. But the effect of the flashbang only lasted a few seconds before the eyes opened again.
A few seconds is enough.
The six people rushed through the domed hall and entered the passage on the opposite side.
Zhao Qiang was in the lead, his legs were weak but he didn't slow down even a step. Fear is sometimes the best fuel—his 100-meter speed at that moment was probably good enough for the provincial team.
After running fifty meters through the passage, the terrain suddenly changed.
The stone slabs beneath their feet vanished, replaced by a narrow bridge suspended in mid-air. The bridge was less than a meter wide, and there was nothing on either side—not darkness, but a pure nothingness, a void so empty that not even light could be reflected.
"One at a time!" Zhou Lang shouted.
Zhao Qiang was the first to step onto the narrow bridge. The bridge swayed slightly, but it could bear the weight. He hunched over and moved forward step by step.
The second one is Han Yingying.
The third is Shen Wei.
As Shen Wei reached the middle of the bridge, a cracking sound came from the passage behind her. The things from the coffins had chased after her.
"Hurry!" Xiong Batian urged.
Shen Wei quickened her pace.
The bridge surface is cracked.
Right at her feet.
Shen Wei plummeted downwards, flung the medicine box out of her hand, and the bottles and jars scattered into the void, disappearing silently.
"Shen Wei!" Han Yingying turned around and reached out, barely managing to grab her wrist.
The bridge surface continues to crack.
