Chapter 20 Conditions
"That fire..." Han Yingying whispered.
"Yes, it was that fire," the assembler said. "The hospital director thought I was the most seriously ill, so he took special care of me. He rescued me from the fire and then pieced me together using other people's bodies."
"Why?" Zhou Lang asked.
"Because he wanted to prove that death can be healed," the assembler said. "He wanted to create a perfect person, someone who would never die."
"So those players..." Zhao Qiang's face turned pale.
"They're all materials," the person who created the body said calmly. "The director selects the most suitable parts and then replaces them on my body. This process has been going on for many years, and I don't even know how many bodies I've had."
Zhou Lang looked at the assembled mannequin and suddenly asked, "Do you want to escape?"
The assembled figure paused for a moment, then laughed: "Escape? I'm not human anymore, what good would escaping do?"
"At least it's better than staying here," Zhou Lang said.
"You don't understand." The splicer shook his head. "I've gotten used to it here. Besides, the director is very kind to me. He comes to see me every day, tells me stories, and talks to me."
"He turned you into this, and you still think he's good to you?" Zhao Qiang couldn't help but say.
"At least he didn't abandon me," the collator said. "Unlike my parents, who were ashamed of me and sent me here, never to return."
Zhou Lang fell silent.
He remembered what the bandaged man had said: the ghosts here were all people who had been hurt in their previous lives.
"Can I ask you a question?" Zhou Lang said.
"Ask away."
"What's going on with this game? Why are players stuck here?"
The assembler thought for a moment: "This isn't a game; this is the dean's experiment. He wants to know what choices people make under extreme fear: whether they choose to live or to die."
What happened to those who escaped?
"They passed the test," the splicer said. "The director will let them go, but at the cost of them remembering everything that happened here forever and living in fear forever."
"What kind of test is this?" Han Yingying said. "This is torture!"
"For the dean, torture is treatment," the assembler said. "He believes that only by experiencing extreme pain can one truly understand the meaning of life."
Zhou Lang suddenly laughed: "Has he experienced it himself?"
The person assembling the pieces was taken aback.
"He makes others suffer while he hides behind the scenes as an observer," Zhou Lang said. "This is not therapy; it's a perverse form of self-gratification."
"You..." The spliced person's expression changed.
"And you're the same," Zhou Lang continued. "You say the dean is good to you, but he's just using you as a guinea pig. You think he cares about you? All he cares about is whether his experiment will succeed."
"Shut up!" the splicer suddenly roared, his body trembling violently.
The temperature in the room plummeted, and blood began to seep from the walls.
"Zhou Lang!" Zhao Qiang tugged at his clothes.
But Zhou Lang didn't stop: "You're afraid to face the truth, so you choose to believe the dean's lies. But you know in your heart that you're just his toy, a toy whose parts can be replaced at any time."
"I told you to shut up!" The spliced man sat up in bed, and the stitched wounds began to burst open, black blood flowing out.
Zhou Lang picked up the chainsaw, but didn't start it.
"You want to kill me?" he said. "Come on, you've had enough of living, haven't you? Lying here every day, waiting for the director to give you a new body, what's the point of this kind of life?"
The person assembling the pieces stopped.
"You're right." It suddenly laughed, a very sad laugh. "I've certainly lived enough. But I can't die, the Dean won't allow it."
"Then come and escape with us," Zhou Lang said.
"Escape?" The spliced figure shook its head. "I can't escape. The director will find me."
"Then kill him," Zhou Lang said calmly.
The room was silent for a few seconds.
"You're insane," the splicer said. "The Dean is the strongest ghost here; no one can kill him."
"Why don't you give it a try and see?" Zhou Lang said. "Anyway, you don't have anything to lose."
The spliced figure stared at Zhou Lang, a complex emotion flashing in its pieced-together eyes.
"You're very interesting," it finally said. "I can help you, but on one condition."
"What are the conditions?"
"If you really kill the director, remember to kill me too," the spliced-together said. "I don't want to live like this anymore."
Zhou Lang nodded: "Deal."
"Then I'll tell you the dean's weakness," the splicer said. "His power comes from the resentment of all the ghosts in this building. If you sever that connection, he will become very weak."
"How do I cut it?"
"Burn this building down," the assembler said. "Just like that fire back then."
Zhou Lang paused for a moment, then laughed: "Interesting."
"But be careful," the splicer said. "The dean will find out what you're doing, and he'll stop you."
"I know." Zhou Lang turned and walked out. "Let's go, it's time to go back."
When the three left the basement, it was almost dawn.
Back in his room, Zhou Lang lay on the bed, his mind replaying the words the splicer had said.
Burn this building down.
This method sounds simple, but it is definitely difficult to implement in practice.
Moreover, he also had to consider the safety of other players, so that they wouldn't also be trapped in the fire.
"Looks like I need to make some serious plans," he muttered to himself.
The next morning, Zhou Lang went to work in room number 4 as usual.
The bandaged man saw him and immediately asked, "Did you go to the basement last night?"
"I went," Zhou Lang said. "I also saw the person who pieced things together."
"What?!" The bandaged man exclaimed in shock, "You actually came back alive?"
"It didn't attack me," Zhou Lang said. "Instead, it gave me some useful information."
"What information?"
Zhou Lang briefly recounted what happened last night, and the bandaged man remained silent for a long time after listening.
"Are you really going to burn this building down?" it asked one last time.
"Yes," Zhou Lang said, "this is the only way."
"And what about me?" the bandaged man asked. "Will I disappear too?"
Zhou Lang thought for a moment: "Probably."
"That's good," the bandaged man said. "I don't want to go on like this anymore."
"Aren't you afraid of dying?"
"I'm already dead," the bandaged man said. "Now I'm just waiting for a release."
Zhou Lang didn't say anything more; he began to think about specific plans.
First, you need to find enough fuel, then you need to ensure the other players can evacuate safely, and finally you need to deal with the butler.
None of these three things are easy.
Just then, the door was suddenly pushed open.
Xiong Batian walked in with a smile on his face.
"Brother Lang, I heard you went to the basement last night?" he said.
Zhou Lang frowned: "How did you know?"
