A bizarre and terrifying experience; I messed up the dungeon world.
Chapter 115 The Shadow of the Boss
They searched all the rooms on the fourth floor. Most of the wards were empty, and a few contained "patients"—things covered with white sheets and motionless. No one lifted those sheets.
In the innermost duty room on the fourth floor, Han Yingying found a yellowed notebook. Opening it, she saw it was a doctor's private diary.
The diary spans a long period, from twenty years ago to ten years ago. The content is mostly a diary entry—what surgeries were performed today, which patient's condition worsened. But starting from the third year, the tone of the diary changed.
"Another failure. Subject number seven had an excessively strong rejection reaction, resulting in multiple organ failure, and died at three in the morning."
"The dean said there was no problem with funding and that I should continue. Continue what? They're no longer patients; they're experimental subjects."
"Number Twelf succeeded. She's still alive, but her eyes... her eyes have turned black."
Han Yingying turned to the last page, where only one line of text was written, the handwriting so messy it was almost illegible:
"They came out of the operating room."
"Operating room." Han Yingying closed her notebook.
Fang Yuan leaned closer to take a look: "The mission prompt says we can't enter the operating room at night. What about during the day?"
"It should be fine during the day." Han Yingying glanced at the time on the panel—2 PM. "Let's go now."
The operating room was on the second floor. As the group of five came downstairs, Lin Xiaoxi clung tightly to Lu Ting's sleeve, her nails almost digging into her flesh. Lu Ting didn't shake her off, but her expression wasn't good.
The atmosphere on the second floor is completely different from that on the top floor.
Large, dark red marks were visible on the walls on both sides of the corridor; it was impossible to tell whether they were rust or something else. The air was colder, and one could vaguely see white mist in their breath.
Han Yingying's perception skill was suddenly triggered.
"Stop," she whispered.
Everyone stop.
"There's something twenty meters ahead."
Fang Yuan gripped the iron pipe tightly. Xu Kun took two steps forward and listened intently for a while.
A creaking sound came from deep within the corridor.
It looked like someone was pushing a wheelchair.
Han Yingying gestured for everyone to stand close to the wall. The voice grew closer, and an empty wheelchair slowly slid out from around the corner of the corridor. No one was sitting in the wheelchair, but the wheels were turning on their own.
The wheelchair paused briefly as it passed in front of them.
Lin Xiaoxi covered her mouth tightly, tears streaming silently down her face.
Three seconds later, the wheelchair continued to glide forward and disappeared at the other end of the corridor.
Han Yingying breathed a sigh of relief, but did not let her guard down.
The operating room had double stainless steel doors with a red sign that read "Surgery in Progress." Han Yingying pushed the door open, and to her surprise, the lights inside were on.
The operating light shone on the operating table, on which sat a metal box.
It's too obvious.
"A trap?" Fang Yuan asked.
"Not necessarily," Han Yingying said, "but don't be careless."
She walked to the operating table and opened the tin box. Inside was a yellowed medical record—a name and number were written in red pen on the cover.
"Number twelve," Han Yingying read aloud.
The moment she picked up the medical record, all the overhead operating lights went out.
In the darkness, a pair of black eyes opened on the other side of the operating table.
Han Yingying reacted faster than she had expected.
She jumped back a step, triggering her skill—[Fear Perception]—at full capacity. The location, distance, and movement trajectory of those black eyes all appeared in her mind.
"Don't move!" she shouted.
The operating lights came back on. A woman stood opposite the operating table—no, she couldn't be called a woman anymore. Her features still retained human contours, but her skin was grayish-white, and her eyes were completely filled with black—pupils, irises, sclera, all black.
The twelfth experimental subject in the diary.
She did not attack.
She just stood there, her dark eyes fixed on the medical record book in Han Yingying's hand.
Han Yingying suddenly had an idea.
"This is yours." She handed over the medical record book.
"Are you crazy!" Fang Yuan jumped up and down anxiously at the door.
Subject Twelve looked down at her medical record book and stretched out her hand. Her fingers were long and pale, and her nails had fallen off, revealing the dark red nail bed underneath.
She took the medical record, opened it, and read it page by page.
She stopped when she saw a certain page. Something was flowing in her black eyes—a drop of black liquid trickled down from the corner of her eye, down her ashen cheek.
She was crying.
Han Yingying didn't move.
Subject Twelve closed her medical record book, glanced up at Han Yingying, and then turned and walked towards the innermost wall of the operating room.
Her hand pressed against the wall, and the wall began to shake. A hidden door opened silently, revealing a downward passage inside.
Subject number twelve walked into the passage and disappeared.
But the hidden door was not closed.
A prompt appeared on the panel:
[Hidden clue triggered: Secret passage now open]
[Hint: The real medical record is on the basement level.]
"She took the medical record book, but she gave us directions," Han Yingying said.
Fang Yuan pushed up his glasses and after a long pause, blurted out, "You're really bold."
"It's not about being brave." Han Yingying put away her scalpel. "Her name is on that medical record. She's not a monster; she's a victim."
For the first time, Xu Kun looked Han Yingying seriously. He didn't say anything, but nodded slightly.
Five people walked down the hidden passage. The passage was narrow, allowing only one person to pass at a time. The pipes in the walls were covered in thick rust, and water dripped from above.
Upon reaching the basement level, a vast open space opened up before me—a huge archive room. Metal shelves stretched from the floor to the ceiling, densely packed with medical records and documents.
"When will we find it?" Lin Xiaoxi whispered. This was the second sentence she spoke throughout the entire instance.
Han Yingying glanced around and noticed a numbering system on the file shelves. "Find by number. The medical records required for the task should have special markings."
The group split up to search.
Han Yingying and Xu Kun were in one group, Fang Yuan and Lu Ting were in another group, and Lin Xiaoxi followed Fang Yuan.
After searching for about half an hour, we learned that something had happened on Fang Yuan's end.
"Come and take a look at this." Fang Yuan's voice came from deep within the archives.
Han Yingying rushed over and saw Fang Yuan squatting in front of a file shelf, holding a black-covered medical record. There was no name on the cover, only a red "S".
"Grade S." Fang Yuan handed the medical record to Han Yingying.
Han Yingying opened it. The contents inside made her pause for a few seconds—it wasn't patient information, but a lab report. The report detailed the entire experimental process in the hospital's underground laboratory, including the source of the test subjects, the purpose of the experiment, and the final results.
The last page reads:
"Experimental objective: To visualize fear and turn it into a controllable weapon."
"Experiment conclusion: Failure. Fear cannot be controlled; it will only consume everything."
