Chapter 62 "Doubts"
After finishing several follow-up appointments, Miyazawa Chinatsu knocked on the door and said that the equipment department staff had arrived.
Kikawa Sumi nodded, and as she turned the corner of the corridor after leaving the house, she caught two figures disappearing behind the stairwell door out of the corner of her eye.
Dressed in a suit and tie, with a steady gait, he didn't look like a medical worker in the hospital.
Sumi Kichikawa followed without making a sound.
He didn't go downstairs, but quietly stopped at the corner, the echoes from the stairwell carrying back the hushed conversation below.
A younger male voice was saying, "...The window confirms the reaction has disappeared here. There's very little debris, but there are definitely signs of battle this time."
The other voice was more composed, its tone calm: "What about the rank?"
"It's hard to judge. The impact area isn't small, at least level two. But unlike the previous two times, which they disappeared suddenly without a trace, this time there was obvious debris left at the scene."
"And unlike the previous two times, there were no signs of battle left like this time."
The young voice paused for a moment: "Mr. Nanami, should we report this?"
A brief silence.
"No rush," said the man known as "Nanami." "We can't yet determine if this is related to the previous two cases. The hospital is handling it as a normal equipment malfunction; don't let the hospital administration know too much."
"clear."
The footsteps began to move upwards.
Kikawa Sumi didn't linger. He turned around and calmly walked back to the nurses' station via the other side of the corridor.
A few minutes later, a blond man in a light-colored suit appeared in the inpatient department.
He was accompanied by a subordinate in a black suit and a hospital administrator.
The administrative staff member, with a somewhat polite and apologetic expression, introduced Mr. Qichuan to Sumi, saying, "Dr. Qichuan, this is Mr. Nanami, the external security consultant. Several nearby establishments have reported electrical noises, so they've come to investigate and confirm."
Nanami Kento nodded slightly to him: "Excuse me."
"Thank you for your hard work," Kikawa Sumi replied with the same simple greeting.
Their eyes met briefly. Nanami Kento's gaze didn't linger on him for long, quickly returning to the notepad in his hands, his tone very formulaic.
"I heard there were flickering lights and static from equipment on the third floor just now?"
"Yes. It lasted very short."
Were the children frightened?
"One child's heart rate briefly spiked, but it has now stabilized."
Qi Haijian wrote two strokes, then asked, "Are there many similar cases recently?"
"It's happened a few times in the past few days. There are no obvious abnormalities during the day; it mainly occurs at night."
Have you ever heard any unusual sounds?
"Some nurses reported that it sounded like the sound effects of an old-fashioned video game console."
Nanami Kento raised his eyes slightly: "Did you hear that yourself?"
"I heard it just now."
Were you in the hospital room at the time?
"Um."
"Besides the sound, were there any other unusual occurrences? For example, temperature changes, unusual odors, or anything specific the child said?"
He asked questions at a leisurely pace, each one wrapped in the guise of a "routine security check," so much so that even the administrative staff nearby didn't find it out of place.
Looking at the corridor light reflected in his glasses, Sumi Kikawa calmly replied, "One child said that a voice in his dream told him to keep playing. That's all."
Nanami Kento jotted down another line, then suddenly changed the subject: "Dr. Kirikawa, have you been feeling unwell lately?"
The subordinate in the black suit next to him was slightly taken aback.
Nanami Kento's tone remained calm, as if he were genuinely offering professional concern to the client as a consultant: "Some types of electromagnetic interference can affect personnel who are present for extended periods, especially after consecutive shifts. Dizziness, tinnitus, and brief auditory hallucinations all need to be documented."
Sumi Kichikawa glanced at him.
"No."
Nanami Kento closed the record board.
"Thank you for your cooperation. We will check the equipment wiring outside the ward tonight, trying our best not to disturb the patients."
"Thank you for your help."
"Of course."
After finishing speaking, Qi Haijian walked out along the corridor with the administrative staff.
As he passed the door of ward 307, his steps slowed imperceptibly, his gaze swept over the closed door, and then he resumed his normal pace and disappeared at the end of the corridor.
Kikawa Sumi stood by the nurses' station, her head down as she sorted through medical records, taking in all of this out of the corner of her eye.
Outside the hospital, the night air was already chilly.
The administrative staff escorted the two to the main entrance, apologized repeatedly, and then returned.
Nanami Kento stood on the steps for a moment, waiting for the glass door to close completely, before walking with the assistant supervisor toward the dark-colored sedan parked by the roadside.
The assistant supervisor glanced back at the lit-up third floor and lowered his voice, "Mr. Nanami, that doctor... do you think there's a problem?"
Nanami Kento did not answer immediately. He took off his glasses and slowly wiped the lenses with a lens cloth.
The assistant supervisor paused for a few seconds, then added, "Your question was much more detailed than a typical survey."
"Dr. Kirikawa has residual curse energy on him." Nanami Kento put his glasses back on.
The assistant supervisor was taken aback: "Residual cursed power?"
Nanami nodded: "Although there aren't many, there are some."
"Could it be because he stayed in ward 307? The bed, monitors, and bed rails could all have been contaminated. It's normal for an ordinary person to have some residue on them after contact."
"That possibility can't be ruled out." Nanami Kento opened the car door but didn't get in, his gaze returning to the third floor of the hospital. "But what I'm suspicious of isn't the residue itself, but his reaction."
"reaction?"
"He's too calm," said Nanami Kenji. "Flickering lights, abnormal noises from the instruments, a child's sudden increase in heart rate, and multiple children having the same nightmare. Even if he didn't know about the cursed spirit, as the doctor at the scene, his normal reaction should have been more obvious confusion or unease."
The assistant supervisor thought for a moment and cautiously said, "However... pediatricians are naturally more adept at handling emergencies than the average person. Nighttime seizures and heart rate fluctuations in children are practically commonplace for them."
"You're right," Nanami Kento nodded, his tone objective. "The medical profession inherently demands an extremely high level of emotional control. Especially when facing family members, one cannot afford to panic in the slightest, so I said I couldn't rule out that possibility."
He bent down and sat in the back seat, fastening his seatbelt.
"It never hurts to keep an eye on things. Review the surveillance footage and entry/exit records near the hospital again, paying particular attention to the third floor of the children's ward."
"Yes."
The car started, the engine humming softly. The dark sedan slowly drove away from the hospital, merging into the sparse traffic of the night.
Nanami Kento leaned back in his seat, his gaze fixed on the streetlights receding outside the car window.
The scene was indeed very strange.
It wasn't a typical sign of exorcism by a sorcerer, nor did it resemble the natural dissipation of a cursed spirit. It was more like it had been trapped in a very small area by some means and then quietly and thoroughly disposed of.
There was no spillover, no damage, and no ordinary person was allowed to see anything they shouldn't have seen.
It was unbelievably clean.
He closed his eyes and sighed silently in his heart.
He disliked working overtime. But even more than working overtime, he disliked seeing dangers of unknown origin lurking in the children's ward.
