Chapter 19 I don't eat people, to make amends
Jinzhi took in his subtle actions.
"Ye Yu, don't get cocky just because I'm being given a little attention. Do you know how many people are lining up to be my friend?"
"Fine, if you don't want to think about it, then don't. Tell me, do you really hate me?"
Ye Yu didn't respond and strode ahead.
"It's getting late, you should go home."
Jinzhi followed behind, dejected.
Generally speaking, Ye Yu's silence is an admission of consent.
She still needs to work harder.
When they reached the alley entrance, Ye Yu watched her get into the car, then silently left with his flashlight.
Jinzhi poked her head out of the car window.
"Ye Yu, if you didn't sign today's contract, remember to bring it to me for me to sign tomorrow."
Ye Yu, with his back to her, said, "I understand."
The next afternoon, the sun was blazing, seemingly baking people on the steaming street.
Jinzhi waited for Ye Yu at the coffee shop near the school gate. Not knowing what he liked to drink, she ordered two caramel macchiatos.
The wind chimes at the door rang with a clear and melodious sound, and the glass door was pushed open completely, allowing Ye Yu, covered in sweat, to enter.
Jinzhi beckoned to him, "Here."
Ye Yu was wearing a blue and white striped shirt and loose-fitting jeans today. He was sweating a lot, and his collar was a little damp. His pale cheeks were also a little red.
In contrast, Jinzhi was dressed in a fresh and pretty light green off-the-shoulder tulip dress, revealing her fair and delicate collarbone. Even from a distance, you could smell the faint fragrance emanating from her as she idly stirred the drink in her cup.
He sat down in the seat furthest from Jinzhi, without touching the drink Jinzhi had pushed in front of him, and instead picked up a glass of cold water and drank half of it.
He then took out two contracts from his bag and pushed them in front of Jinzhi.
Jinzhi didn't even glance at him, and asked as she signed the document, "What were you doing? You're sweating so much."
Ye Yu didn't tell her that he had ridden his bicycle from the hospital under the scorching sun, and while she wasn't looking, he wiped the sweat from his forehead.
"Nothing much, I have class later."
After she signed the contract and took her copy, she got up to leave.
"Don't rush, there's still half an hour before class starts. You can rest for a while. I'm not going to eat you."
"Need not."
He pushed open the door and left.
Jinzhi was left alone, puzzled.
Does Ye Yu hate her even more now?
She didn't do anything.
How am I supposed to teach her advanced mathematics the day after tomorrow?
The phone rang, and Jinzhi answered it.
A cheerful male voice came from the other end.
"I just finished a meeting at your school. Are you at that coffee shop near the entrance?"
"Yes, I ordered you a caramel macchiato, come on."
"Give me another chocolate mousse cake."
Jinzhi complained, "How can a grown man like you love eating cake so much? You're a doctor, after all. Be careful of developing diabetes later in life if you consume too much sugar."
Despite saying that, she ordered two chocolate mousse cakes on her tablet.
"What's wrong with doctors? Doctors also have the right to enjoy life. If I really had to restrict my carbs and sugar intake every day to maintain my figure like you, I would just die."
"Okay, I got it. I'll wait for you."
The wind chimes rang again, welcoming a man dressed in a neat white shirt and black trousers.
He sat down next to Jinzhi with a swagger, unbuttoning the top two buttons of his shirt with one hand, taking off his glasses, and speaking in the same sarcastic tone as Jinzhi.
"So, Miss, you finally have time to think of me? If you ask me, your school is really stingy. They can't even afford a bottle of ice water, and they call it inviting experts to research a new project. If it weren't for our appointment, I wouldn't have bothered coming."
Zhou Yinche is the eldest son of the Zhou family, who work in the medical field in Yuncheng. He is three years older than Jinzhi and currently works at the First Municipal Hospital.
Jinzhi pushed the caramel macchiato over.
"This isn't the end. Try it, it's really good, just as good as what you'd find in a fancy restaurant. I also ordered two small cakes for you."
Zhou Yinche glanced at Jinzhi a few more times, and unusually, didn't touch the drink next to him. Like Ye Yu, he drank a glass of cold water.
He leaned back and tapped his fingers on the table.
"Those who offer unsolicited favors are either treacherous or thieves."
He and Jinzhi practically grew up together, but they've been busy with their studies and careers these past two years and have lost touch a bit. But he knows exactly what she's going to say no matter what she says.
Jinzhi picked up her drink and brought it to his lips.
"Stop being so formal. Just drink it. Do you think I'd poison you?"
Zhou Yinche took a couple of sips and then heard her say, "Everyone has their own expertise. I need your help with something medical."
Zhou Yinche immediately spat out the drink in his mouth and looked at Jinzhi with disgust.
"Zhou Yinche, what are you doing? You're filthy! Where's your manners and upbringing?"
Zhou Yinche wiped his mouth nonchalantly. "I'd rather keep my job than show up. Miss, petty squabbles are fine, but when it comes to life and death, I'm not playing with you."
The waiter brought the cake over.
Jinzhi pushed the plate over.
"Do you see me as the kind of ignorant and purely evil person?"
Zhou Yinche raised an eyebrow.
"I didn't say that. It just means throwing drinks at people's birthday parties, attacking anyone I don't like, and kicking dogs on the street when I'm in a bad mood."
"What do you mean?"
Under Zhou Yinche's gaze, Jinzhi suddenly felt a little guilty; she had indeed acted quite recklessly before.
She was lucky to be raised in the Jin family; in other families, she would have been left to fend for herself.
"Even if I'm bad, you still want to play with me, otherwise you wouldn't have come today."
"I'll get straight to the point: do you have any charitable medical slots for cancer treatment?"
As far as she knew, Zhou Yinche Hospital had a quota of charitable medical care every year, which was used to treat patients with financial difficulties for free, covering all medical expenses.
Zhou Yinche sat up straight and looked directly at Jinzhi.
"You even know this? Looks like you've put in a lot of effort."
In the past, young ladies only cared about what bags to buy and where to take photos.
"The number of slots has been quite limited in the past two years. Our department only has one slot, and there are already hundreds of patients waiting to sign up."
That means it exists.
"Here's the thing, you can add a spot for me. You don't need to pay anything. You just need to tell them it's completely free. I'll pay for it, and you'll get a good reputation in return."
Zhou Yinche hissed, reached out and pinched Jinzhi's cheek, squeezing it back and forth.
Jinzhi opened his hand.
"What are you doing? It hurts! You've ruined my makeup."
"I'm just curious if you've had your face changed, or if you're possessed? Or maybe your head has been twisted? And you've become a philanthropist?"
"Can't you speak properly? What do you mean by 'head held back'? What dialect are you speaking?"
"Oh, a new joke I learned online, it suits you quite well."
Stared at by him with a curious yet questioning gaze, Jinzhi said half-jokingly, "Just think of it as me hitting my head and turning over a new leaf. My classmate's mother has cancer. I treated him quite badly before, and I want to make amends, but I don't want them to know, so they won't come after me later. You know I hate trouble the most."
"Just tell me if you'll help or not. If you do, I'll send you the money, and you can arrange for someone to perform the surgery at the end of the month."
"Miss, it's already the middle of the month. Do you think this project is easy to get? Even if we give you a spot, it still needs approval, and the earliest it will be is next month."
"So you agreed?"
Zhou Yinche ate two bites of cake.
"I didn't say that. Send me the patient's general condition first, and I'll think about how to handle things for you in the easiest way."
"That means you agree." Jinzhi beamed. "I knew Cheche, you're the most reliable one, such a good person. Even if I wasn't a good person before, you would still help me. A good brother will never abandon his brother!"
Zhou Yinche laughed and scolded, "Get lost. What good brother? Who's that? I'll think about it and give you an answer. You'd better really have reformed."
"I swear, whatever gift you want for your birthday, I'll get it for you."
"Sure, I want a Phantom, the modified blue one in your garage would be nice."
"Don't even think about it, find something else..."
The two chatted until after 5 p.m., when Zhou Yinche was called back by a phone call from the hospital, and they parted ways thereafter.
