When Jiang Zhiyu woke up the next morning, the clock on the wall already pointed to a little after nine o'clock.

Su Lixing, a seasoned veteran of the trade with over a decade of experience, not only helped her choose the most practical model but also negotiated a lower price, ultimately securing a discount of nearly 20% compared to the market price. Looking at the component samples spread across half the table, Jiang Zhiyu secretly rejoiced—if she had tried to figure out the market herself, it would have taken her three to five days, let alone securing such a favorable price.

After selecting the semiconductor components, the next step is to sample various electrical appliances.
Old Chen led them to the other side of the stall, where a dazzling array of finished electrical appliances were displayed. First up were radios: "This is a Sony transistor portable radio, small in size, with good sound quality and low power consumption; it's the hottest seller right now. This is an RCA desktop radio, with even better sound quality, but it's a bit bulky. And there's also a Panasonic portable model with an alarm clock function, which young people love."
Jiang Zhiyu picked one of each.
Then came the televisions: "This is a 12-inch Sharp monochrome portable TV with clear and high-quality images; this is a 14-inch RCA desktop monochrome TV with a large and comfortable screen; and this is a 19-inch Sony color TV using the latest Trinitron picture tube, with particularly vibrant colors, but it's still expensive and not many people are buying it."
In 1976, color televisions were not yet widespread even in the United States, and were almost nonexistent in China. Jiang Zhiyu took one sample television, one black and white and one color, back to disassemble and study them, hoping that China's television industry could get off to a start sooner.
Next up were tape recorders: a Sony portable cassette player, a Panasonic desktop recorder, and an eight-track tape recorder commonly used in cars today—I took one of each.
Electronic calculators were also essential: a Texas Instruments handheld basic calculator that can perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and square root calculations; and a Hewlett-Packard scientific calculator that can perform trigonometric functions and logarithms, making it ideal for researchers. I took two of each.
There were also electronic watches that were just becoming popular at the time: digital models with LCD displays and quartz models with analog displays. They were much more accurate than mechanical watches, and I took a few samples of each.
Old Chen also brought out the Atari Pong home game console—the one that connects to the TV to play billiards, which is incredibly popular in the US right now. Jiang Zhiyu also took one back so that her children in China could play it.
In addition to these consumer electronics, Su Lixing also helped her select samples of some core components for home appliances: small car refrigerators, washing machine motors, air conditioner compressors, and even samples of microwave ovens that had just been launched.
"Take these back and let the domestic manufacturers study them," Su Lixing said with a smile. "The domestic home appliance industry is still lagging behind. With these samples, we can avoid a lot of detours."
Seeing that Jiang Zhiyu only took one or two samples of each item, he was a little puzzled: "Yuyu, shouldn't you take more? If your friends in China need them, it's okay to take more back. Su Lixing dusted off his hands and said with a smile, "Come on, Uncle will take you to lunch! There's a Chinese restaurant nearby run by a Shanghainese owner; their local cuisine is exceptionally authentic, I guarantee you'll love it."
