Chapter 67 Stanford University Library
Jiang Zhiyu slept until dawn. When she drew back the curtains, the morning mist in San Francisco had not yet dissipated, and the neon lights were blurred into a hazy patch of light in the fog. She leaned against the French windows, her fingertips lightly tapping the glass. Her gaze swept over the "Project Starfall" file on the bedside table—the word "Top Secret" on the cover was wrinkled by her fingertips, and a cold smile curled at the corner of her mouth.
"Since we're already here, it would be a waste not to go back empty-handed." She turned around, pulled out a map of San Francisco, and spread it on the table.
[Host, we absolutely must go to the Stanford University Library! Their engineering and aerospace literature is urgently needed domestically.] Seventeen's voice echoed in my mind. [Also, the machine tool factories in Silicon Valley, the semiconductor labs at Berkeley…]
Jiang Zhiyu circled on the map with a red pen: Stanford Library was marked with a five-pointed star, Silicon Valley Warehouse with a triangle, Berkeley Lab with a checkmark, and finally, the suburban military supply depot was heavily circled.
"Is there enough space?" she asked, touching her chin.
[The space is so big now! Installing all this is a piece of cake!]
She nodded in satisfaction, turned around and changed her outfit—a white shirt tucked into khaki flared pants, a navy blue trench coat over it, black-rimmed glasses perched on her nose, and deliberately pursed her lips, looking every bit the formidable female academic star.
She hailed a taxi and gave the driver the address of Stanford University. The driver, a middle-aged white man, glanced at her a couple more times through the rearview mirror: "An Asian exchange student? That's rare."
"Exchange student," Jiang Zhiyu replied casually, her gaze fixed on the fleeting street scene outside the window.
At nine o'clock in the morning, sunlight filtered through the palm leaves onto the lawn on the Stanford campus. Students hurried by, books in hand, and the aroma of coffee filled the air. Jiang Zhiyu took off her glasses, rubbed her temples, and when she looked up again, her eyes were filled with an eager thirst for talent.
She sat on a library bench for ten minutes, waiting for a girl carrying books to walk by. With a slight twitch of her fingers, the girl's silver school badge silently slipped into her palm. Wearing the badge, she mingled among the students and swaggered into the engineering library.
[With that kind of hand speed, it's a shame you're not a master thief.]
"Shut up." Jiang Zhiyu said expressionlessly, heading straight for the special collections section on the third floor. The military and aerospace documents here were only open to students on campus, and the books on the shelves, such as "Jet Propulsion Physics" and "High-Temperature Alloy Smelting Technology," made her eyes light up—these were things that even money couldn't buy in China.
"Seventeen, time stands still."
【Received! Ten minutes to go!】
The surroundings froze instantly: the wind outside the window stopped, the caretaker stood rooted to the spot, and dust motes hung suspended in mid-air in the sunlight. Jiang Zhiyu rubbed her hands together, "harvesting" along the bookshelves. With a flick of her fingertips, rows of hardcover books vanished into thin air and reappeared in the study in the small courtyard.
"Aerospace materials, semiconductors, computers..." she muttered, not even missing a single related journal or research report. When she moved to the computer section, her eyes lit up when she saw "Principles of Microprocessor Design" and "Integrated Circuit Manufacturing Technology"—Silicon Valley was just starting out in 76, and these were the gold mines of the future.
[Host, the study is overflowing!]
"Pile them up in the yard, since time stands still anyway." Without turning her head, she casually collected half a shelf of medical and agricultural books.
As they prepared to leave, Jiang Zhiyu caught a glimpse of the "Archives" at the end of the corridor, with a sign on the door that read "Unauthorized personnel are prohibited from entering." Jiang Zhiyu raised an eyebrow, walked over, and gently tapped the lock. With a "click," the lock opened.
Inside were rows of filing cabinets, filled with the smell of old paper. She opened one cabinet, which was full of unpublished research project materials and military cooperation reports. Just as she was about to start working on it, she heard footsteps outside.
She quickly hid behind the filing cabinet. The door was pushed open, and a man in a black trench coat walked in, his hat pulled low. The man skillfully pulled open the last drawer and rummaged through it, but finding nothing he was looking for, he muttered a curse under his breath.
As he turned around, the brim of his hat was blown up by the wind, revealing half of his handsome profile.
Jiang Zhiyu: "—"
Song Yanzhou?
The man saw her too, and the documents in his hand fell to the ground with a "thud." Their eyes met, and the air froze for three seconds.
"What are you doing here?" Song Yanzhou reacted first, picked up the documents and stuffed them back into his bag, his voice very low.
"That's what I should be asking you," Jiang Zhiyu said, arms crossed and raising an eyebrow. "Wasn't Commander Song talking to Brother Chen about the cargo ship? Why is he 'checking documents' at the archives?"
Song Yanzhou's ears turned red: "...Check the project information."
"Oh?" Jiang Zhiyu's gaze swept over his bulging canvas bag. "What kind of documents need to be put into the special archives?"
He was speechless when asked the question, so he decided to give up and ask, "And what about you? What are you doing here?"
"I'm borrowing books," Jiang Zhiyu said matter-of-factly.
Song Yanzhou: "—" You're kidding me.
Suddenly, hurried footsteps sounded outside: "I just saw someone walking this way! Search!"
Their expressions changed drastically. Song Yanzhou reacted quickly, grabbing Jiang Zhiyu and pressing her against the gap in the filing cabinet, covering her mouth and breathing on her ear: "Don't make a sound."
Jiang Zhiyu was held in his arms, her nose brushing against his chest, smelling the scent of soap mingled with sunshine, and her cheeks flushed instantly. She tried to push him away, but he held her shoulders down: "Don't move, someone's coming."
The administrator's footsteps stopped at the door: "Nobody's here?" "You must be mistaken, hurry up and leave. Can't you see the chaos outside?"
Once the footsteps faded into the distance, Song Yanzhou released her grip and took a half-step back. Looking at her flushed ears, a slight smile unconsciously appeared on his lips: "How many books did you borrow?"
"A few dozen books, I guess," Jiang Zhiyu mumbled—she couldn't very well say she'd emptied half a floor.
Looking at the dozen or so files in his bag, Song Yanzhou suddenly felt a little embarrassed.
The two slipped out of the archives and hid in the grove of trees. Only after confirming no one was following them did Song Yanzhou breathe a sigh of relief: "Where to next?"
"I'm hungry, let's eat first." Jiang Zhiyu rubbed her stomach.
Helpless, Song Yanzhou led her toward the school gate. Passing a hot dog stand, Jiang Zhiyu's eyes lit up: "I want one, with ketchup and yellow mustard."
"Junk food," Song Yanzhou muttered, but still bought two and added two bottles of cola.
The two sat on a bench on the lawn. Jiang Zhiyu took a bite of her hot dog, not even noticing the sauce on her lips. Song Yanzhou watched for a while, then couldn't resist reaching out to wipe it off for her. Their fingertips touched her soft lips, and they both froze.
Jiang Zhiyu lowered her head, her ear tips flushed, pretending to be focused on eating her hot dog. Song Yanzhou withdrew his hand, the warmth of the touch still lingering on his fingertips. His Adam's apple bobbed. "Where do you want to go this afternoon?"
Jiang Zhiyu mumbled, "Just wandering around." She didn't mention going to Silicon Valley or the military warehouse—those places were too dangerous, and there was no need to drag him along.
Song Yanzhou saw through her thoughts but didn't point them out. He simply took out a small communicator from his bag: "Take this. If you're in danger, press it three times and I can locate you."
Jiang Zhiyu took the communicator; the metal casing was cold. She looked up at him; sunlight fell on his eyelashes, casting a soft shadow.
"You be careful too," she said.
Song Yanzhou smiled, revealing two small tiger teeth: "Don't worry, I'm Yanzhou."
After finishing her hot dog, Jiang Zhiyu headed towards Silicon Valley. Song Yanzhou watched her retreating figure until her navy blue trench coat disappeared around the street corner before turning and heading towards Chinatown—he needed to quickly coordinate with the cargo ship and also find out where the "Supplementary Report to Project Starfall" was hidden in the archives.
Jiang Zhiyu stood outside a machine tool factory in Silicon Valley, looking at the guards at the warehouse entrance, a smile playing on her lips.
"Seventeen, get ready to work."
[Received! Target: Precision machine tool blueprints, and the batch of imported bearings in the warehouse!]
The sun was shining brightly, perfect for moving things. Jiang Zhiyu straightened her trench coat and headed towards the warehouse. She planned to pack up all the local specialties she could take with her from this trip to the US and bring them back home.
