Chapter 63 Discussion
When Jiang Zhiyu was woken up by Seventeen, the sunlight was already streaming into the room through the window. She stretched, her joints cracking slightly, and her long-strained nerves finally relaxed. After washing up, she changed into a light blue dress, tied her hair in a neat ponytail, and applied only a little moisturizer to her face—the girl in the mirror had clear eyes and brows, like a Chinese college student just out of school; no one would guess that she was the one who had turned upside down the secret laboratory in Country M last night.
She took out stir-fried beef noodles and a bowl of congee from her spatial storage and ate slowly. Seventeen muttered beside her, "Host, Chen Jianzhong and the others must be frantic. We need to hurry."
"What's the rush?" Jiang Zhiyu took a sip of porridge. "Calm down, calm down, good food is worth the wait."
……
The three people in Chinatown are now on the verge of a confrontation.
"Old Chen, are you sure the information isn't wrong?" Chen Jiahong sat on the counter with his legs crossed, twirling a lighter in his hand. "Is it a young girl sent from Shanghai?"
Chen Jianzhong paused, wiping the glass, and frowned at him. "Yes, I saw her yesterday. She'll be here soon."
"No offense," Chen Jiahong slammed his lighter on the table, "but don't you guys know how dangerous this mission is? We've been watching for half a month, and not even a fly could get in, and now a little girl shows up—"
"Jia Hong." Lin Ruihua interrupted him, adjusting her glasses, her tone calm but tinged with seriousness, "Since the organization sent her here, there must be a reason. Let's not speculate."
"Professor Lin, I'm not being presumptuous," Chen Jiahong sat up straight and lowered his voice, "Think about it, Commander Song and his men have been detained for a whole week, and the US is guarding the area like an ironclad fortress. Our comrades have been wandering around outside the country the whole time, unable to find a chance to get in. Now, a young girl who's just come of age—what can she do? Smuggle in by delivering vegetables? Or disguise herself as a cleaner?"
Chen Jianzhong put the cleaned cups back in the cabinet and sighed, "Jia Hong isn't entirely wrong. I scouted the place again last night; there are at least three layers of guard posts, and patrols inside. Even if she has special abilities, one person..."
He didn't finish his sentence, but all three understood.
Lin Ruihua walked to the window, pulled back a corner of the curtain, and looked outside. The alley was deserted, with only a few elderly people sunbathing.
"Has the organization mentioned her background?" he asked.
Chen Jianzhong shook his head: "The telegram was very short, and it didn't mention anything else."
"That's even stranger." Chen Jiahong stood up and paced back and forth in the cramped cubicle. "Normally, a mission would at least provide some background information, right? Like which system they're from, what their special skills are, what missions they've carried out before. This time, there's nothing at all, just 'Comrade Jiang'—"
"It's probably from a secret front," Lin Ruihua said in a deep voice. "Their identity is highly classified, so it's not convenient to disclose it."
"A secret front?" Chen Jiahong scoffed. "Professor Lin, are you genuinely believing that or not? How capable can the people on the secret front be? We've been here for a while now; what storms haven't we weathered?"
Lin Ruihua didn't speak, but just looked at him through his glasses.
Chen Jiahong felt a little uneasy under his gaze and sullenly sat back down in his chair: "Fine, fine, I won't say anything more. We'll see what the situation is when she arrives. But let me make this clear first: if she's just a decoration, I'm not going to risk my life to play along with her."
"When did your life become so valuable?" Chen Jianzhong walked over and patted him on the shoulder. "In all these years here, haven't you always been the one complaining about the danger first, but in the end, you still did it anyway?"
Chen Jiahong, his thoughts exposed, awkwardly rubbed his nose: "That's different... This job is genuinely difficult. I'm not bragging, but even if you gave me a whole company of soldiers, I might not dare to force my way into that lab."
Lin Ruihua sat back down, placing his hands clasped on the table: "Therefore, we should be more cautious. Once this 'Comrade Jiang' arrives, we should first understand her plan before deciding how to cooperate. If the plan is feasible, we will fully support it; if…"
He paused, not finishing his sentence.
Chen Jianzhong nodded: "Professor Lin is right. We shouldn't underestimate her just because she's young, but we also shouldn't blindly trust her. Let's discuss everything after we meet."
The three fell into a brief silence.
Having eaten and drunk her fill, Jiang Zhiyu, carrying a small canvas bag containing her wallet and tissues, hailed a taxi and gave them the address of Chinatown. As soon as the car turned into the familiar alley, she saw a "Temporarily Closed" sign hanging on the wooden door of "Chen's Restaurant," a stark contrast to yesterday's bustling atmosphere.
She pushed open the door, and the wind chimes tinkled as she entered. Chen Jianzhong was sitting behind the counter wiping glasses. When he saw her come in, his eyes lit up, and he immediately stood up: "This way."
Passing through the kitchen and lifting the curtain, I saw two men sitting in a small cubicle. One wore frameless glasses and a gray tracksuit, exuding a refined air; the other wore a casual suit, his Omega watch gleaming on his wrist, a smile playing on his lips, looking quite lively.
"This is Lin Ruihua, who teaches physics at the University of San Francisco and is usually in charge of intelligence analysis." Chen Jianzhong pointed to the man wearing glasses, then turned to the man in the suit, "This is Chen Jiahong, who is in the import and export business and is very well-informed."
Lin Ruihua pushed up his glasses, his gaze lingering on her for a moment with a hint of scrutiny; Chen Jiahong, on the other hand, cheerfully extended his hand: "Comrade Jiang, right? I've heard that the country was going to send someone, I didn't expect her to be so young."
Jiang Zhiyu gave a perfunctory handshake, without any further pleasantries: "I've rescued the person."
"What?" Chen Jianzhong's cup slammed onto the table with a clatter, spilling tea all over the floor. Lin Ruihua abruptly stood up, the chair legs scraping against the floor with a screeching sound; Chen Jiahong's smile froze, his eyes widening in disbelief.
"You mean...they were rescued?" Lin Ruihua's voice trembled. "Commander Song and the other seven? And Professor Sun too?"
"Mm." Jiang Zhiyu nodded, took out a handkerchief from her bag and wiped the tea that had splashed on her hands. "I went there last night, and the person has been settled in a safe place now."
Chen Jiahong paced back and forth, rubbing his hands: "My God...you did it all by yourself? How did you manage that? The lab is so heavily guarded, we've been watching for half a month and haven't found an opportunity..."
"You don't need to worry about the details," Jiang Zhiyu interrupted him. "The curfew on the streets this morning is because of what happened last night. It's gotten a bit big because they're looking for not only people but also things. All those rescued were Chinese, which is why they're checking Chinese people especially closely. You guys shouldn't gather in groups lately."
Chen Jianzhong finally snapped out of his shock and wiped his face: "That's right. This morning when I went to the market to buy groceries, I saw soldiers checking every house, even turning over the tents of homeless people three times. If the restaurants hadn't been closed, they probably would have turned everything upside down."
Lin Ruihua adjusted his glasses, his tone serious: "Comrade Jiang, you said you also took things from the lab?"
"Yes, some equipment and data that might be useful domestically," Jiang Zhiyu said. "I'm here today to ask you to help me rent a large, remote warehouse so I can relocate some people there. Also, do you know any grain wholesalers?"
Chen Jiahong's eyes lit up: "We have a warehouse! And we happen to have a batch of goods we want to ship back. If you can help, it would be a win-win situation!"
"What is it?"
Lin Ruihua picked up the conversation, his voice trembling with excitement: "These are secondhand equipment that several patriotic overseas Chinese pooled their money to buy—four tracked bulldozers, two loaders, and several precision machine tools, all of which are urgently needed in China right now. We were originally worried about how to transport them back, because the customs in the US are too strict... especially targeting China."
"Where is the address?" Jiang Zhiyu asked, intrigued. These devices were practically treasures in China during the 1970s.
Lin Ruihua immediately pulled out a piece of paper from his pocket, wrote down an address, and handed it over: "It's in a farm warehouse in the suburbs, very remote, with no one around for miles. The warehouse is just sitting empty anyway, so it's perfect for you to use."
Jiang Zhiyu took the note, glanced at it, folded it, and put it in her bag: "I'll give you the funds this afternoon. I'll ship the equipment back with it, so you don't need to worry about it."
Chen Jiahong wanted to ask more questions, but Chen Jianzhong stopped him with a look. He rubbed his hands together and said with a smile, "Then thank you very much, Comrade Jiang! These devices being able to return to China is more important than anything else!"
Jiang Zhiyu didn't linger and got up to say goodbye. As she walked out of the restaurant, the sunlight shone brightly on the red lanterns at the alley entrance, dazzling her eyes. She glanced back at the tightly closed wooden door; the three people inside were probably still in shock—and rightly so, who would have thought that a girl who looked like a student could accomplish in one night what they hadn't been able to do in half a month?
She hailed a taxi and gave the driver the address of a farm in the suburbs. The driver, a burly man with a thick beard, saw that she was Chinese and wanted to go to such a remote place, so he asked for an extra ten dollars before she got out. Jiang Zhiyu didn't argue and paid the money directly—compared to the equipment she was about to receive, this amount of money was nothing.
The warehouse was hidden deep within the farm, surrounded by vast stretches of wasteland, with only a few withered trees swaying in the wind. Jiang Zhiyu used the key given to her by Lin Ruihua to open the warehouse door, and a rusty smell wafted out.
The scene inside surprised her—four bulldozers were parked side by side, their tracks covered in mud; next to them were loaders and forklifts, which looked a bit old but were well-maintained; the innermost machines were covered with tarpaulins, and when she lifted them, the model numbers on the nameplates were exactly the kind that were in short supply in China. In the corner were two tractors and a truck, both with flat tires, but the engines didn't seem to have any major problems.
"These overseas Chinese really went all out," Jiang Zhiyu murmured to herself. She was also moved by their profound patriotism. With a wave of her hand, she stored all the equipment into her spatial storage—the warehouse instantly became empty, leaving only dust on the floor.
After finishing all this, she took out shrimp dumplings and soy milk from her spatial storage and sat down at the warehouse entrance to eat them slowly. The wind blew through the grass clippings, and a few birds chirped in the distance; it was eerily quiet.
"Seventeen," she suddenly said, "Wouldn't it be too conspicuous to send this equipment back?"
"Are you worried about being targeted by those people?" Seventeen said. "Why don't you ask Commander Li? He definitely has a solution."
Jiang Zhiyu nodded. After finishing breakfast, Jiang Zhiyu began to survey her surroundings. She needed to find a place to release those people in the space. She had finally come all this way to the US, and she needed to stock up on some goods to take back with her. Besides, she was already here! How could she not cause some trouble?
