Chapter 298 Nuclear Leak at Factory 808 - Trap and Counterattack
Without hesitation, Jiang Zhiyu got up and went to the next room.
Wang Zhaixing and Li Mancang were still awake, huddled under a lamp checking today's compass data. Seeing her push the door open, they both looked up simultaneously.
"No rush," Jiang Zhiyu said bluntly, "There's an urgent matter I need to deal with. There's a serious nuclear leak at Factory 808."
Wang Zhaixing sat up abruptly in bed.
"Could it be related to that token that flashed today?"
Jiang Zhiyu shook her head, then nodded.
"We just touched that token this morning, and then the incident at Factory 808 happened. The timing matches up, but the nuclear leak was aimed at me personally. They wanted to lure me into a trap because they couldn't find me this month and they were getting anxious."
She leaned against the doorframe, her voice calm, but there was no smile in her eyes.
"They're trying to force me to show myself."
Wang Zhaixing panicked and suddenly stood up: "Then you absolutely can't go! It's obviously a trap!"
"If I don't go, they'll go even crazier." Jiang Zhiyu shook her head. "If they want to test my methods, then let's see if they're qualified."
She paused, then said, "You two pack your things and head back to Beijing tomorrow morning. Don't wander around outside. The rest of you can wait a while before starting the search again."
Wang Zhaixing stood there, her lips moved, and after hesitating for a long time, she finally asked the question.
"Girl, what's the purpose of your collecting all these bronze artifacts? I don't mean to pry into your privacy, it's just..." He rubbed his hands together, "I really have no idea."
Jiang Zhiyu glanced at him, but wasn't angry.
"I know what you mean. To be honest, I'm not entirely sure what these things are actually for. But a voice keeps telling me—I have to find them all."
She certainly couldn't reveal the true purpose. But her answer was sincere enough.
Wang Zhaixing nodded knowingly and sighed, "That's true. Those who are blessed with great fortune always have this feeling—it's not that you're choosing the path, but that the path is pushing you forward. You can't escape the entanglements of cause and effect."
Jiang Zhiyu smiled. "So that's how it's said. Well then, I'll be going now; they won't wait for us."
"Don't worry about us," Wang Zhaixing waved his hand. "Two grown men can't possibly get lost. Let's go, let's go, be careful."
……
After leaving the guesthouse, Jiang Zhiyu turned into an alley without streetlights, and in a flash, disappeared into the night.
When she recently toured the country to clean up radiation, Factory 808 was one of her stops, and the anchor point was already in place. Teleportation was as natural to her as opening a door and entering a house.
"Host," Seventeen said in his mind, "maybe they haven't had time to make all the arrangements yet. They must have calculated exactly how long it would take you to get there, and that's the time difference we're exploiting."
"Oh, Seventeen's gotten smarter now?"
"Of course! I'm an advanced interstellar system!"
……
Factory 808 was nestled in a desolate mountain wilderness. Its gray factory buildings looked like a crouching beast under the moonlight. Several fully armed soldiers patrolled the barbed wire fence surrounding the factory area. They were all stunned when they saw Jiang Zhiyu appear at the gate.
She walked over and handed over her work ID.
The leading soldier looked her over again, saluted, and his eyes were filled with undisguised awe—this girl was all alone, without even a gun, and without wearing any protective clothing, as she walked in.
Jiang Zhiyu didn't explain further and walked straight into the depths of the factory area.
The core laboratory was on the third basement level. The heavy lead door was half-open, and a pungent metallic smell filled the corridor. She walked to the experimental area, squatted down, and Seventeen carefully scanned it.
"Host, the cooling system's third circuit has been tampered with—the safety valve's sealing gasket has been replaced with a special alloy that ages faster at high temperatures. This isn't natural wear and tear; it was intentional. There are trace amounts of chemical reagents remaining on the gasket's surface. The method is extremely professional; an ordinary person wouldn't be able to detect it. More importantly, the fact that they were able to enter the core laboratory and do this indicates that the mole's status is not low—at least they have the authority to enter the core area."
"It seems the traitor in Factory 808 is quite well hidden," Jiang Zhiyu said in a low voice.
She stopped talking nonsense, sat cross-legged in the center of the experimental area, and closed her eyes.
Poison-based superpowers slowly emanated from her body, spreading out in all directions like an invisible net. Nuclear radiation, like countless fine needles, pierced the air, the walls, and the cracks in the floor, densely packed and seeping into every corner.
She began to absorb it.
Her poison-based superpower drew the radiation energy strand by strand, channeling it into her body through her meridians. With each breath, she felt a burning, stinging sensation in her blood, as if someone were pouring molten iron into her veins. Yet, her breathing remained steady, and she didn't even flinch.
Seventeen mentally counted: "The current radiation concentration in the area has decreased by thirty percent... fifty percent... seventy percent..."
Time passed by, second by second.
The sky outside the window changed from pitch black to deep blue, and then from deep blue to grayish-white.
More than five hours later, Jiang Zhiyu finally opened her eyes.
"The regional radiation concentration has dropped to a safe level," said the 17th.
She pushed herself up, her knees a little weak, but she quickly regained her balance. The poison-based energy within her body had become much purer during the absorption process, and the burning sensation had subsided, replaced by a sense of solidity.
She turned and walked toward the exit.
As soon as I reached the ground floor, I heard a barrage of gunfire.
The perimeter of the factory area.
Jiang Zhiyu paused for a moment, then slowed her pace. She walked around the base of the wall to the side and peered out through a gap in the low wall—
On the barren slope outside the factory area, forty or fifty men dressed in black were exchanging fire with the stationed soldiers. The enemy's firepower was not weak; they had automatic rifles and grenades, and were clearly well-trained. The soldiers were pinned down behind barbed wire, unable to raise their heads for the time being.
"These people..." Jiang Zhiyu narrowed her eyes.
She didn't rush out directly.
Activating her wood-based superpower, vines silently emerged from the soil beneath her feet, like thin snakes, creeping along cracks in the ground and through drainage ditches, quietly spreading towards the enemy's position.
The vines wound around the group of people, clinging to their feet and releasing trace amounts of toxins with nuclear radiation properties.
Silently.
The first to fall was a gunman on the outermost ring. His finger suddenly loosened its grip on the trigger, his body went limp, and he collapsed to the ground. Then came the second, the third… like dominoes, one after another they fell.
The gunfire gradually subsided and finally stopped completely.
Forty or fifty people were all foaming at the mouth and collapsed on the ground; some were still convulsing, while others had completely lost consciousness.
The barren slope was deathly silent.
Jiang Zhiyu emerged from behind the low wall and strolled over. She checked each person one by one, confirming that they were all simply unconscious due to radiation poisoning. She extracted some of the poison, enough to sustain them until the interrogation ended.
After finishing tidying up, she stood up and shouted to the soldiers who were peeking out from behind the low wall behind her.
"Come and clean up the mess, then report the truth."
The lead soldier quickly scaled the wall, snapped to attention, and saluted: "Yes, sir! Received!"
Jiang Zhiyu glanced at the people lying haphazardly on the ground and twitched the corner of her mouth.
"It looks like there won't be any peace and quiet from now on."
