Chapter 27 Moving into the Courtyard
The town market was more bustling than Jiang Zhiyu had imagined. The sounds of vendors hawking their wares and haggling filled the air.
Jiang Zhiyu asked Uncle Zhang to wait under the old locust tree while she wandered around the small town, following her memory to the corner she had glimpsed earlier—a place where some discarded wooden planks were piled up, and few people passed by. She placed the package from her spatial storage there, concealed it, and then ran to the post office to hail a cart.
They led the cart driver to where she had hidden her packages and pulled apart the wooden planks.
"Master, come and lend a hand," she said to the master who was following behind her.
The cart driver was so shocked by what he saw that his mouth dropped open – eight large packages, each about half a person's height, were piled on the ground, some of which had the words "Shanghai City" on them.
"What are you standing there for? Move it." Jiang Zhiyu said calmly, picking up a package and putting it on the cart.
The man then came to his senses and, seeing that the young girl could actually carry such a large package by herself, quickly went to help. After some effort, the two of them finally managed to load the package onto the cart, the huge package making the cart creak and groan under its weight.
When they arrived under the old locust tree, Uncle Zhang was anxiously smoking his pipe. Seeing this commotion, he dropped it: "Little Jiang, you…you've brought your whole family here?"
"Yes, I brought some things for winter." Jiang Zhiyu smiled, took out a pound of peach shortbread from her bag and handed it to him. "Uncle Zhang, please take these to the yard at the foot of the mountain. Thank you for your trouble."
Uncle Zhang quickly waved his hand: "No, no, one yuan is enough..."
"Here, have some on your way." Jiang Zhiyu stuffed the peach shortbread into his hand, turned and left, "I sent a bicycle over, I'll go back by myself in a bit, you go first."
Uncle Zhang clutched the oil paper package, watching her retreating figure, his eyes welling up with tears. He had been widowed for many years, and this was the first time someone had cared for him so deeply. This young woman, though seemingly cold, had a warm heart.
Jiang Zhiyu didn't head straight to the supply and marketing cooperative; instead, she strolled around the market first. Most of the stalls sold potatoes and cabbages grown by their own farmers, with the occasional hunter displaying rabbit skins and roe deer meat. She didn't buy much, only selecting some cold-resistant vegetable seeds and a few kinds of grain seeds—the black soil in her space needed to be used to grow something; she couldn't rely on stockpiling goods forever.
Once inside the supply and marketing cooperative, she bought oil, salt, soy sauce, vinegar, and a set of iron pots and pans. These things looked ordinary, which would be good for concealing her identity; she couldn't very well pull out the exquisite porcelain tableware from her spatial storage right away.
Carrying her things, she walked to the deserted alleyway and took out a brand-new Forever brand bicycle from her storage space. She had specially prepared this for herself in Shanghai; having a bicycle in the countryside would make getting around much more convenient.
Just as she rode out of the market, she bumped into the same group of educated youth who had come with her the day before. Jiang Wenwen immediately spotted the gleaming bicycle, her eyes reddening, and she couldn't help but mutter, "Sure enough, she's a capitalist's daughter, so extravagant..."
Jiang Zhiyu pushed off with her foot, and the bicycle came to a steady stop in front of her. The condescending gaze was oppressive. Jiang Wenwen's words caught in her throat. She glared at her with her neck stiffened, but in the end, she didn't dare to say anything more and turned to leave.
The other educated youth smiled awkwardly and hurriedly said goodbye. They still had to go back to pack their things; they were going to work tomorrow, so they didn't dare to be as leisurely as Jiang Zhiyu.
As I rode into Kaoshantun, almost the entire village turned to look at me. Children chased after my bicycle, while adults stood at their doorways watching with envy in their eyes.
"My goodness, is this bicycle new?"
"This educated youth looks like he's from a painting; his family must be officials, right?"
"My three sons don't have girlfriends yet..."
Captain Chen happened to be coming out of the brigade headquarters when he saw the commotion. He frowned, cleared his throat, and asked, "What are you all doing here? Aren't you supposed to be working?"
The crowd dispersed, but they were still discussing it from a distance. Captain Chen walked up to Jiang Zhiyu, looked at the bicycle, and then remembered the eight large packages Uncle Zhang had brought back. He couldn't help but say, "Little Jiang, you... you've certainly prepared everything."
"It's cold in the mountains, so bring plenty of supplies to get through the winter." Jiang Zhiyu nodded with a smile. "Captain, I'll go back and pack now."
"Alright, alright." Captain Chen watched her ride away on her bicycle, then shouted to the villagers who were still gossiping, "Stop thinking nonsense! Little Jiang is not someone you can covet. She has connections, she's not only strong, but she also knows kung fu. She can crush stones like tofu! If anyone dares to have any funny ideas, don't come looking for me if you get your arms or legs broken!"
Upon hearing this, many people backed down, but a few shady-looking young men in the crowd curled their lip—no matter how good a woman is at fighting, can she withstand a large number of people?
Captain Chen saw it all but didn't bother to do anything about it. These guys were notorious troublemakers in the village, even their parents couldn't control them. If they really messed with Jiang Zhiyu, they'd be asking for trouble.
As soon as Jiang Zhiyu arrived at the courtyard gate, she was stunned by what she saw. Not a single weed under the walnut tree remained, the windows of the three rooms were sparkling clean, and even the kitchen stove was polished to a shine. Aunt Wang and Qiuyue were stacking the last bundle of firewood into the shed when they saw her return and greeted her with smiles.
"Little Jiang, you're back?" Qiuyue pointed to the yard. "My mom and I have tidied up for you. Is there anything you need?"
Jiang Zhiyu felt a warmth in her heart: "You've gone to so much trouble for Auntie and Sister Qiuyue, it's already very kind of you."
"No trouble at all," Aunt Wang said, beaming. "Our family has received so many good things from you for free, it's only right that we do this." With that, she dusted herself off and left with Qiuyue.
After seeing the two off, Jiang Zhiyu closed the door and began unpacking the packages. Thick quilts, cotton-padded coats, sweaters... all winter clothes prepared for her parents, along with some commonly used ointments and fabrics. She sorted the items and put them away neatly, feeling much more at ease.
[Host, the corn in the space is ripe!] 0047 reminded, [The time flow in the black soil is five times that outside, so plant some potatoes or sweet potatoes, and you'll harvest them quickly!]
Jiang Zhiyu's eyes lit up. Food was the most precious thing in this era; with this space, at least she wouldn't have to worry about going hungry.
Just then, there was a knock at the gate, and a high-pitched female voice asked, "Is anyone home?"
Jiang Zhiyu opened the door, and there stood a thin, middle-aged woman with triangular eyes that darted around, looking her up and down with a shrewd look in her eyes.
"Who are you?" Jiang Zhiyu asked in a cold tone.
"I'm your Aunt Liu, I live at the east end of the village." The old woman forced a smile. "Your yard is quite tidy, isn't it? I just came to ask, you've just come to the countryside, it must be hard work for a young girl like you. I'll ask my son to come and lend you a hand. My son is very handsome! Oh! By the way, do you have a boyfriend?"
Jiang Zhiyu immediately understood her purpose and said directly, "I don't have a boyfriend, and I don't plan to find one in the village. If Aunt Liu is here to play matchmaker, please go back."
Aunt Liu's face stiffened, inwardly cursing the woman for being ungrateful, but she remained warm and friendly, saying, "Oh dear, what are you saying? When fate comes, you can't stop it..."
"I don't believe in fate, I only believe in myself." Jiang Zhiyu interrupted her directly, "If Aunt Liu has nothing else, I'm closing up shop. I still need to pack my things."
Aunt Liu was speechless, and left dejectedly. But in her heart, she was plotting—when her rascal son returned, she'd teach that educated youth a lesson, and then, once the deed was done, they'd see how arrogant she could be!
Jiang Zhiyu closed the door, her brows furrowing slightly. Someone came to the door so soon after she arrived; it was really annoying. She turned and went into the kitchen, took out a few freshly ripened ears of corn from her spatial storage, washed them, and put them in a pot.
The aroma of corn quickly filled the air. She scooped one out, took a bite, and found it sweet and chewy—products from her space were indeed different.
As night fell, Kaoshantun quieted down, with only the occasional bark of a dog and the sound of the wind.
