Chapter 246 The Road Ahead
The old man, who had just been on his deathbed, coughed softly, slowly opened his eyelids a crack, and his cloudy eyes slowly turned, his gaze falling on Jiang Zhiyu by the bedside.
The light in those eyes, which had almost gone out, suddenly shone brightly again. The old man gave a faint smile, his voice hoarse as if squeezed from his body.
"I've finally waited for you, girl."
Jiang Zhiyu's eyes instantly welled up with tears. She lowered her head and softly replied, "I'm here. I'm late."
The old leader slowly shook his head, and then gently patted the back of her hand with the hand she was holding tightly.
"Not too late, you've come at the perfect time."
He took a slow breath, and after his lips were moistened by the spiritual spring water, he spoke much more fluently than before.
"When people get old, they become useless. Why waste such precious things on me? I'm so lucky to be able to pass away peacefully in my final days. It's all thanks to you, my girl. In the end, I feel I haven't lived in vain."
Jiang Zhiyu bit her lower lip tightly, unable to utter a single word.
The old leader slowly caught his breath and looked towards the northwest.
"The only pity is that Lao Qian's project was a step behind and couldn't wait for the desert laboratory to be completed."
Zhuge Yunhe took a step forward from the wall and grabbed the old man's other hand.
"Drink some more of this water. This girl might still have some left. If you can hold on a little longer, you might be able to see it with your own eyes..."
The old leader gently shook his head.
"Yunhe, you and I both know my own physical condition. That water was just to save me a little dignity. Even if I drank more, it wouldn't save my life."
Zhuge Yunhe abruptly turned his face away, and the usually composed Xuanmen elder's shoulders trembled slightly uncontrollably.
Jiang Zhiyu's throat tightened suddenly, and she asked Seventeen in her heart.
"Seventeen, could I teleport with my old leader just this once? Just this once, to take him to the desert laboratory and put an end to his regret."
Seventeen remained silent for half a second before replying.
"Host, the rules are fine, but given his current physical condition, he simply can't withstand the dizziness and shock of landing at the teleportation anchor point. He might just die in your arms."
Jiang Zhiyu's fingers trembled slightly, and she could only suppress the thoughts in her heart. She lowered her head and forced back the tears that were welling up in her eyes.
The old leader gazed at her silently, his cloudy eyes seeming to see through all her thoughts, and his chapped lips twitched slightly.
"Girl, I know your background is extraordinary, and I understand that no matter what you do, you always have our country in your heart. That's enough. You can choose to listen to what I have to say next."
Jiang Zhiyu responded softly, her voice already hoarse: "What is it? Please tell me."
The old leader spoke slowly, explaining each word carefully.
"You saw those people outside just now. It's inevitable that some people will have other ideas after I leave, but you don't need to worry. The moment I breathed my last, I arranged for someone to keep a close watch on you, and no one will dare to make things difficult for you in the slightest."
Jiang Zhiyu nodded quietly.
"All your information is kept by only a handful of elders. As for your special abilities, only three people in the world—me, Yunhe, and Xuyunzi—can fully explain the ins and outs. The few people in the Bureau who have come into contact with the clues are all trained by Old Zhuge. They adhere to the rules and will not divulge a single word to outsiders."
Jiang Zhiyu nodded again.
The old leader took a deep breath, his gaze remaining fixed on her face.
"Girl, the higher-ups have already finalized everything in the meeting yesterday. All the arrangements have been made. The rest is up to you. Just follow your heart and do as much as you can. This is never something that can be achieved by one person alone."
Jiang Zhiyu responded softly, "I've got it."
The old leader's hand, which she was holding, twitched slightly, and he slowly reached under the pillow to pull out an object.
Jiang Zhiyu subconsciously reached out and caught it; it was an old, silver-gray pocket watch. The edges of the watch case had been worn smooth over the years, giving it a faint silver sheen, clearly a personal item that had been with its owner for decades.
The old man gently placed the pocket watch in her palm.
"I don't have much of value in my life, but this pocket watch has been with me for decades. Keep it as a keepsake."
Jiang Zhiyu slowly tightened her grip on the pocket watch, holding it firmly in her palm, and communicated with Seventeen in her mind.
"Seventeen, how about I show the old leader some of the experimental equipment stored in the space? Just a quick look, nothing else will happen—"
"Host," Seventeen interrupted her directly.
"Don't make any impulsive decisions when you're caught up in these emotions."
Jiang Zhiyu was slightly taken aback.
"You mean, since he's leaving soon anyway, it doesn't matter if we just take one last look, right?"
Jiang Zhiyu felt a tightness in her throat and remained silent.
Seventeen's tone softened a bit more.
"Host, have you forgotten the bottom line you secretly set when you first transmigrated? This space is your last trump card for survival. As long as you are alive, this secret must never be known to a second person. Even if the other party is your old leader who is about to pass away, not to mention that Zhuge Yunhe is present in this room. Host, please do not make any decisions under extreme emotions."
The phrase "Don't make any decisions when you're in a state of extreme emotion" was like a bucket of ice-cold water poured over Jiang Zhiyu's head, the chill spreading from her limbs all the way to her feet.
She shuddered, and the impulsive thought that had almost surged out of her mind was extinguished by this bucket of cold water.
She lowered her head and whispered her thoughts to herself.
"I was confused; I almost misunderstood."
Seventeen gently comforted her.
"It's alright, host. You are still a human being. Humans have seven emotions and six desires, and it's normal to be influenced by emotions when doing things. However, you can't act based on your feelings."
Jiang Zhiyu slowly closed her eyes to calm her turbulent emotions. When she looked up again, her old boss on the bed let out a soft breath, his gaze passing over her and looking towards the door with a different kind of expectation in his eyes.
Jiang Zhiyu instantly understood that the old man still had things to say to the waiting crowd. She carefully put the pocket watch into her pocket and slowly stood up.
"Do you still have something to say to the people outside? I'll wait for you outside."
The old leader looked at her quietly, the gentle smile in his eyes not fading.
"Go on, girl."
Jiang Zhiyu nodded, and the tears she had been holding back for so long finally broke free and fell drop by drop onto the back of the old man's hand.
She raised her hand and wiped her cheek hard, then turned and walked step by step toward the door.
The moment she pushed open the door, a cool breeze rushed in from outside. All the people waiting in the corridor and courtyard turned their gazes on her, even more intense and heavy than when she had just entered.
Ignoring the stares of others, Jiang Zhiyu glanced around the courtyard and saw an empty hut with a wooden sign that read "Duty Room" hanging on the wall. She walked straight over to it.
He pushed the door open and then slammed it shut behind him.
There was only a wooden table and two chairs inside. Jiang Zhiyu leaned against the door panel, slowly sliding down the cold wooden board to the ground, squatting on the cold cement floor, burying her face in her knees.
Seventeen was very sensible and didn't make a sound to disturb them. The room was so quiet that only her own rising and falling breathing could be heard.
The faint sounds of footsteps and hushed conversations could be heard outside the door, a constant stream of voices.
After an unknown period of silence, Zhuge Yunhe's hoarse voice came from outside the door.
"Xiao Jiang, don't go. There's something important to announce in public later."
Jiang Zhiyu slowly lifted her face from between her knees, her eyes red. She stared blankly at the door for a moment before squeezing out a response from deep in her throat.
"Yes! I'm here."
