Chapter 241 Military Region Family Compound
The jeep drove all the way to the military compound.
As the car turned into the family compound, its speed naturally slowed down. Jiang Zhiyu watched as rows of red-brick bungalows glided past the window, their walls peeling and faded. Not far away was a drill ground where some people were doing morning exercises, some were practicing their singing, and others were sitting on small stools by the door, sewing shoe soles while holding their children. This was the unique, lively atmosphere of the military compound.
The jeep stopped in front of a small courtyard, and Song Yanzhou pulled the handbrake swiftly.
The surrounding commotion suddenly froze. The women in the residential compound were always the biggest gossipmongers.
"Ouch."
"Commander Song is back."
"There are still people sitting in the car!"
"Is she his wife?!"
"I've heard that Commander Song's wife is as beautiful as an angel."
"I've never seen it before."
In an instant, the curtains of each house were quietly peeked open, the doors creaked open one by one, the small stools were moved around, and the children simply gathered around and stood at the gate of their own yards, all their eyes fixed on the jeep.
Jiang Zhiyu sat in the passenger seat, her ears twitching slightly. She didn't miss a single word of the hushed discussions, but a slight smile appeared on her lips.
Song Yanzhou got out of the car, walked around to the passenger side, and opened the car door. Just as Jiang Zhiyu was about to jump out, a pair of hands reached out steadily, one supporting her elbow and the other protecting her waist, half-hugging and half-helping, gently and skillfully bringing her out of the car.
As soon as Jiang Zhiyu's feet touched the ground, she caught a glimpse of the jaws of the several women next to her.
"Tsk tsk."
"Commander Song's wife is really precious."
"Can't you get out of the car through that door?"
"I have to lift her up in my arms."
"Young people these days are really something."
"Not ashamed at all."
"If you don't beat her enough, as the saying goes, a wife who is beaten is like dough that has been kneaded."
Jiang Zhiyu had exceptional hearing; she heard every single word clearly without even lifting her eyelids.
Song Yanzhou heard it, raised an eyebrow, and turned to look sharply at the gossiping aunties. He remained expressionless and didn't say a word, instantly silencing the aunties.
Song Yanzhou turned around, took Jiang Zhiyu's hand naturally with one hand, their fingers gently intertwined, and led her into the courtyard.
-
Pushing open the door, Jiang Zhiyu slowly looked around.
It was just a row of detached bungalows, nothing special. The small plot of land in the yard had already been turned over by Song Yanzhou; the soil was loose and nothing had been planted yet. There were three rooms in total, and Song Yanzhou had already cleaned them spotless, with not a single cobweb in the corners.
Pushing open the main door leads to the living room, which isn't very large, with a small bedroom connected to it. To the left of the living room is an empty room, locked; to the right is a small kitchen of about seven or eight square meters, where the stove, water tank, and cutting board are all neatly arranged. Further back is a small bathroom with only a squat toilet.
Jiang Zhiyu looked around but couldn't see a place to take a bath.
Song Yanzhou stood behind her, and he knew exactly where her gaze fell.
"The conditions here are as they are; I haven't done anything major yet. Tell me how you want to fix it, and I'll do it your way."
Jiang Zhiyu hummed in agreement. Since she wasn't staying long anyway, she'd make do for now. She smiled and said, "That'll do for now, I'll add more later."
Song Yanzhou nodded, and the slight nervousness in his eyes finally dissipated.
-
Jiang Zhiyu turned around, intending to take another look at the open space in the yard, when she looked up and saw several heads peeking out from the gate of her own yard—children, aunts, and young women, all staring at her with bright eyes.
A bold little girl squeezed to the front: "Hello, new auntie!"
Jiang Zhiyu was amused and turned to Song Yanzhou, whispering, "This is the first time I've come to the family compound as your wife, so I should bring some wedding candy and introduce myself to everyone."
Song Yanzhou was taken aback for a moment, then his eyes lit up: "Hey, thank goodness you reminded me!"
Without saying a word, he turned around and walked out of the courtyard. He straddled the old bicycle at the gate, and with a turn of the wheel, he disappeared in a flash, leaving a group of people at the gate looking at each other in bewilderment.
Jiang Zhiyu stepped out of the courtyard gate and nodded slightly to the women standing at the door: "Eldest sister, aunt, please take care of me in the future."
The aunties who had been so rude earlier immediately felt a little embarrassed. One of them mustered up her courage and spoke up first: "Oh dear, what are you saying, new bride? You should take care of her. We're all sisters from the same compound. We'll chat together often in the future."
Jiang Zhiyu smiled.
Seventeen muttered to herself, "Host, once you opened your mouth, none of them dared to be sarcastic anymore. It really proves your old saying—'You can't hit a smiling face.'"
Jiang Zhiyu herself found it funny.
-
Before long, the sound of a bicycle bell came from the other end of the alley.
Song Yanzhou rode his bicycle, one hand on the handlebars and the other carrying a large cloth bag. He gracefully dismounted at the courtyard gate. The bag was untied, revealing it to be full of various snacks, including melon seeds, peanuts, dates, fruit candies, and milk candies.
Song Yanzhou carried the cloth bag and went up to distribute the candy to everyone, starting with the children, giving each of them two large handfuls. The children smiled so much their eyes narrowed into slits, clutching the candy and skipping home. Then he distributed it to the aunts and grandmothers, giving each of them a small handful.
"Auntie, take this. My wife gave it to me. I'm sorry, I didn't think of that beforehand."
An older woman smiled and waved her hand, "Oh, Commander Song, you're too kind. We already had candy the day you submitted your marriage application. Everyone in the compound knows you're married. We're too kind to accept it again."
Song Yanzhou, with his gentle temperament, patiently said, "It's alright. My wife came all this way herself; it's a token of her affection."
Jiang Zhiyu stood beside him, smiling faintly.
The oldest woman looked Jiang Zhiyu up and down with curiosity in her eyes and asked, "Hey, Commander Song, if I may ask, why doesn't your wife come to live here? You two are newlyweds."
Song Yanzhou straightened up instantly, his back taut, and the pride in his eyes almost overflowed.
"Auntie, my wife is busy, even busier than me. She's a higher-ranking official than me, and she's always on the go. She only managed to get a vacation this time."
The women all gasped in surprise: "Your wife has a job?"
Song Yanzhou puffed out his chest: "Of course there are, their levels are much higher than mine."
"What kind of job?"
Song Yanzhou's expression turned serious: "This is not something we can casually inquire about; it's a classified unit."
-
With just four words, the air instantly fell silent.
Most of the women in the compound had married into the family from the countryside and couldn't read many words. But even if they couldn't read, they understood the weight of the words "classified unit." A classified unit with a higher rank than Commander Song—everyone instantly understood what that meant.
All eyes turned to Jiang Zhiyu, and the sour expressions that had been there just moments before completely changed, replaced by a mixture of awe and envy.
"Oh my goodness, this is really..."
"Commander Song is so lucky!"
"It's one thing to marry a wife who's as beautiful as an angel, but she also has a job; and not only that, she works in a top-secret unit, with a rank higher than Commander Song's—the only one like her in our entire residential compound!"
The men standing nearby who had married female soldiers from the cultural troupe were initially quite proud, but now they were filled with envy. Looking at Song Yanzhou's wife, they realized that she was someone you couldn't find even with a lantern.
As darkness fell, the women exchanged glances and wisely dispersed.
Jiang Zhiyu stood at the gate of her own courtyard, watching all this, a subtle smile playing on her lips.
