Chapter 16 Departure
In the military region office in Shanghai, Division Commander Li held the document, his fingers trembling slightly. When he looked up, the bloodshot in his eyes hadn't faded. "Good, very good! Battalion Commander Song, Professor Chen, you two have done a great service this time! If this had fallen into the wrong hands, how many soldiers would we have lost!"
Song Yanzhou stood ramrod straight, his military green shirt rolled up to his forearm, revealing his strong wrists: "Commander, we were able to retrieve the complete data this time thanks to the help of a female comrade."
"Oh?" Commander Li put down the documents, leaned forward, and picked up his enamel mug. "Is that so? Tell me about it." He looked at Song Yanzhou's tense profile and was a little surprised—this kid grew up in the military compound and his eyes were always on missions and guns. When did he become so nervous about the topic of "female comrades"?
Unaware of his superior's thoughts, Song Yanzhou recounted in a low voice the events of being intercepted at the port, the disappearance of the documents, the sudden appearance of the woman, her rescue, and the eventual return of the documents. Old Chen added from the side, "That woman was quick-witted, meticulous, and didn't talk much; she was truly a capable person!"
Commander Li's smile faded, and he took another sip of strong tea, his brows furrowing deeply. "She's a person of conscience! We can't let this kind of patriot down." He put down his teacup, stood up, and walked out. "Song Battalion Commander, didn't you exchange contact information with that female comrade?"
"She wouldn't tell me." Song Yanzhou's voice deepened. "I gave her the address and code of the liaison point in Gangcheng, and told her that she could contact us anytime if she encountered any difficulties."
"Yes, that's it!" Commander Li stopped at the door, turned back, and instructed, "Old Chen, send a telegram to Hong Kong immediately, clearly describing the woman's physical characteristics, and tell them to pay close attention. If she does come, be polite and don't mistreat her. Try your best to meet any requests she may have; don't let her think we're ungrateful!"
Old Chen quickly replied, "Yes, I'll take care of it right away!"
Song Yanzhou gazed at the sycamore trees outside the window. A gust of wind blew by, leaving only the tall and slender figure of that woman behind.
港城
When Jiang Zhiyu walked out of the store carrying two large bags of bread, the hazy morning mist had not yet dissipated.
Jiang Zhiyu put the bread into her spatial storage and turned to walk towards the New Territories Cannery. The last batch of canned goods ordered yesterday had already been packed, and the tin boxes were piled up at the warehouse entrance.
"Young man, this is the last batch. Check it carefully." The bearded boss, with a cigarette dangling from his lips, handed over the delivery slip.
After signing the contract, Jiang Zhiyu waited until the boss and his employees had walked away before using the shadow of the warehouse to store the canned goods into her spatial storage.
"0047, are they still there?" She pulled down her hat brim and walked towards Wan Chai. She had noticed she was being followed since she left home that morning! But she was busy receiving goods, so she ignored the people following her.
[Host, they're still there. Three men in black suits and two on motorcycles are loitering at the street corner to the northwest!]
Jiang Zhiyu paused, then turned into the nearby fabric shop. She bought a new outfit, and when she came out, her reflection in the mirror showed her current attire: a gray cloth jacket, a wide-brimmed hat, and her face smeared with ash—she looked exactly like a small-time peddler.
She slipped out of the back door of the cloth shop, meandered through a narrow alley piled with clutter, and pulled out the note left by Song Yanzhou. It simply read, "**Tea restaurant, find Old Liu, want a bowl of wonton noodles, knock three times on the table."
"0047 Location: Tea Restaurant"
A good host
When Jiang Zhiyu arrived at the tea restaurant, the wooden door was ajar, and the occasional aroma of tea wafted out. Jiang Zhiyu pushed the door open and went in. An old man wearing an apron was wiping the table. He looked up at her, his gaze lingering on the dust on her face and the empty basket in her hand.
"I'd like a bowl of wonton noodles." Jiang Zhiyu sat down and tapped her fingertips three times on the edge of the table.
The old man paused, put down the rag, and went into the kitchen. A moment later, he came out with a bowl of wonton noodles and said in a low voice, "Let's talk in the back room."
The kitchen cubicle was small, containing a square table with a yellowed newspaper on it. Old Liu lifted the newspaper to reveal a secret letter underneath, the handwriting messy but forceful: "Just sent by Commander Li. He said he'll do his best to help you with whatever you need."
Jiang Zhiyu breathed a sigh of relief: "I'm being watched, I have to leave tonight."
"What a coincidence." Old Liu dragged a wicker trunk out from the corner of the wall. "There was a ship that was supposed to transport medicinal herbs to Shanghai. It left at three in the morning, which would have been perfect for taking you with it." He stuffed a blue cloth shirt and a headscarf into the trunk. "Change your clothes and pretend to be a boatman's wife. No one will check."
"Don't show your face before boarding the boat. I'll have my apprentice pick you up at six o'clock. Take the back alley."
During the few hours she spent hiding in the kitchen cubicle, Jiang Zhiyu didn't rest. She closed her eyes and organized the supplies she had bought in her spatial storage. The abundance of supplies made Jiang Zhiyu smile with satisfaction.
[Host, this is really too much. You can't eat that much.]
"You're just a system, you don't understand. There's a severe shortage of supplies on the mainland right now."
At six o'clock in the evening, Old Liu's apprentice arrived on time to pick her up. After passing through three back alleys, she boarded a creaking tricycle and bumped along the way to the pier. As night deepened, the neon lights of the port city rushed past the car window.
At 2:50 a.m., the group arrived at an abandoned dock. Jiang Zhiyu, dressed in a blue cloth shirt and with a headscarf wrapped around her head, mingled among several boat women and followed Old Liu's apprentice toward the cargo ship with the sign that read "Medicinal Herbs Transport".
The plank was swaying violently. She held onto the wicker crate and heard faint police sirens behind her—they must have discovered she was missing and come to search her.
Just as Jiang Zhiyu stepped onto the cargo ship's deck, a series of urgent whistles rang out from the dock, mixed with a man's angry roar: "Stop that ship! Stop and inspect all ships scheduled to depart tonight!"
Old Liu's hand, which was counting the cargo at the bow of the boat, suddenly stopped, and his face instantly turned deathly pale. He turned to look at Jiang Zhiyu, his eyes filled with panic: "It's the Black Dragon Gang! How did they catch up so quickly?"
Jiang Zhiyu didn't speak. Using the wooden crates stacked on the deck as cover, she slipped to the stern in a flash. She could hear the chaotic sounds of boarding behind her, as well as the urgent whistles.
"Search! Search thoroughly! Even if you have to turn over every single plank of wood, find him!" The leader's voice was rough and hoarse, carrying an undeniable ruthlessness.
Old Liu and several boatmen were shoved aside, their faces pale but they dared not utter a sound. Jiang Zhiyu pressed herself against the hull, felt her way to the iron ladder leading to the bottom of the boat, and crouched down to crawl under it. Just as those people were about to see her, she slipped into her spatial dimension.
"Boss, there's no one here!"
"Go check over there! Don't let anyone escape."
The search party outside searched for a full fifteen minutes, the sounds of rummaging through wooden crates and kicking metal echoing throughout. Finally, all that could be heard was that rough, hoarse voice cursing, "Damn it, did she jump into the sea? Keep a close eye on the coastline. As long as she's still in the port city, we'll catch her sooner or later!"
The footsteps gradually faded away until the ship trembled slightly and the engine roared, at which point Jiang Zhiyu withdrew from the space.
She was the only one left at the bottom of the ship. She slowly straightened up, dusted herself off, and walked toward the deck.
Old Liu and several boatmen were slumped on the deck, panting. When they saw her come out, their eyes widened as if they had seen a ghost.
"Where...where did you hide just now?" Old Liu's voice was still trembling, and he didn't even notice that the pipe in his hand had fallen to the ground.
Jiang Zhiyu didn't explain, but simply said, "The boat can set sail now."
Old Liu finally snapped out of his daze and hurriedly told the boatmen to raise the anchor. The cargo ship slowly sailed away from the dock, and the lights of the port city became increasingly blurry behind them. Looking at Jiang Zhiyu's back, he suddenly remembered the words in Commander Li's secret letter—"This woman is no ordinary person; you must escort her properly."
The search just now was like a net covering the sky; not even a rat could escape it, let alone a person. But this Comrade Jiang seemed to have vanished into thin air… Old Liu wiped the cold sweat from his forehead, with only one thought in his mind: Commander Li was right, this man is indeed very capable.
Jiang Zhiyu leaned against the ship's railing, gazing at the dark sea. 0047 cried out in her mind, "[Host, you scared me to death! Thank goodness you reacted quickly!]"
She didn't speak, but gently stroked the red mole on the inside of her wrist. In a few hours, the ship would dock.
I wonder how her parents are doing now.
