Chapter 135 The Hidden Door
There was no further conversation along the way, and the car drove straight to the Ding family's house.
When Ding Hanhan got out of the car, Gu Feng didn't want to move. But when he looked up, he saw a large group of people standing outside the car—the advisor, Ding Lisheng, and a large group of people were waiting there to greet him.
With such a display of strength, Gu Feng dared not be presumptuous and quickly got out of the car as well. Fortunately, the half hour of meditation he had just spent had helped him regain some strength, so he didn't embarrass himself when climbing those dozen or so steps.
Ding Lisheng was the first to step forward, raising his hand to pat Gu Feng on the shoulder: "How are you, Gu Feng? Are you alright?"
Gu Feng's face turned pale when he was slapped, and cold sweat broke out instantly. He almost blurted out, "You two, father and daughter, didn't you conspire together? One bit me, and the other slapped me, and in the same spot no less!"
Seeing Gu Feng grimacing and gasping for breath, Ding Lisheng realized that he had probably touched his injury. He felt embarrassed and said, "I'm sorry, Uncle didn't mean to."
"It's alright. Another day when I push your daughter down, I'll say—'Sorry, I didn't mean it, but it was intentional.'" Gu Feng smiled sinisterly at Ding Lisheng.
When Ding Lisheng saw him smile, he assumed it was because he was magnanimous, so he chuckled along with him.
"You little rascal, you never have a moment of peace. If you're injured, just lie down quietly. You'll be lying down at home anyway, so what difference does it make where you lie down?" The advisor stepped forward and scolded with a laugh.
"Master, please stop teasing me now, look at my current appearance," Gu Feng said with a wry smile.
"Dad, Master, I'm going back to my room now." Ding Hanhan said, and left without waiting for their reply. She was really afraid—afraid that these two cunning old foxes would see something from her face.
"I've spoiled this girl rotten, Gu Feng, please don't take offense." Ding Lisheng shook his head and sighed.
How could I be surprised? I've seen even stranger things from her, so why should I be polite? Gu Feng wore a kind smile, completely concealing his true thoughts.
"Well then, Gu Feng, it's getting late, and you're injured. The journey has been bumpy, which isn't good for your health. Besides, you still have to go to school with Han Han early tomorrow morning. Why don't you stay here tonight? There are plenty of empty rooms here, you can sleep in whichever one you like, and I guarantee no one will bother you."
Upon hearing this, Gu Feng's eyes lit up—Really? Would it be alright if I wanted to sleep in Ding Hanhan's room? But then he shook his head: "No, Uncle Ding. My sister will worry if I stay out overnight."
"Hehe, I thought you had nothing to worry about. I've already spoken to your sister. Don't worry, I didn't mention your incident at the hospital to her. I just said that the old man's condition is a bit unstable, and I asked you, the great doctor, to stay here and take care of him. He'll probably be staying here tonight." The clerk chimed in with a smile.
"Damn it! Advisor, you're being incredibly unfair! You're using my old man as a pawn!" Ding Lisheng cursed angrily.
The clerk looked aggrieved: "Mr. Ding, please forgive my incompetence. Apart from this excuse, which is barely acceptable, I really can't think of any other way."
"Revenge, this is clearly revenge. You must still be holding a grudge about me using you as a shield this morning..." Ding Lisheng said, but then noticed that Gu Feng's expression had become strange. He suddenly realized that he had let something slip and quickly stopped talking.
"In the morning?" Gu Feng asked knowingly.
Ding Lisheng blushed, glared at the gloating clerk, and then forced a smile: "Hehe, it's nothing, it's nothing. Come on, come on, let's go inside and choose your room. From now on, this place will be your home too. The room you sleep in will always be reserved for you."
"Ding Sheng, you're practically bringing a lover into your home." The advisor deliberately emphasized the word "lover."
"If you don't speak, no one will think you're mute." Ding Lisheng was a little embarrassed and retorted.
The advisor stuck out his tongue and made a funny face.
Gu Feng looked at them and couldn't help but sigh inwardly—sigh, those two old rascals.
That night, as Gu Feng lay on the unfamiliar yet spacious Simmons mattress, he still felt somewhat unreal.
To think that I would stay overnight at someone else's house without thinking is hardly the behavior of a well-behaved child.
After thinking for a moment, he sat up again, turned on his phone, and dialed Su Man'er's number.
Unexpectedly, the woman's first question wasn't about him, but about Old Man Ding.
This left the old official extremely frustrated. But upon further reflection, he realized it was understandable—Su Man'er probably thought Old Man Ding was critically ill and that he was busy trying to save him.
Gu Feng had no choice but to continue making up a story, following the adviceer's lie: he said that Old Man Ding's condition was still not very stable, and that he was here and probably wouldn't be able to go home for a while, and so on.
After hanging up the phone, Gu Feng finally breathed a sigh of relief, sat cross-legged, and was about to practice his internal energy.
Just then, there was a knock on the door. Ding Lisheng's voice rang out from outside: "Gu Feng, are you asleep?"
"Not yet, Uncle Ding, please come in." Gu Feng had no choice but to respond, but he couldn't help feeling a little resentful: Didn't they say no one would bother them?
Ding Lisheng pushed open the door and walked in: "How are you? Are you getting used to living here?"
"A little," Gu Feng said honestly. There's no place like home; no foreign girl can compare to your own—besides, you don't even provide for me.
Ding Lisheng was only interested in promoting his own daughter, so he wouldn't arrange any women for him. He simply said, "Take it slow, you'll get used to it."
"Did Uncle Ding want to see me about something?" Gu Feng asked.
"It's nothing, just chatting." Ding Lisheng chuckled, then took out a gold card from his pocket and handed it over with a slightly embarrassed look on his face. "Gu Feng, this is a small token of the Ding family's appreciation. The password is six eights."
"This..." Gu Feng was stunned for a moment, then understood and shook his head. "Uncle Ding, what I said to Ding Hanhan today was just something I said in anger. Don't take it seriously."
"Han Han? What did you say to her?" Ding Lisheng looked puzzled.
"Huh?" Gu Feng's face flushed. It turned out that Ding Hanhan hadn't mentioned to Ding Lisheng that she was asking for her wages out of spite, and now, she had inadvertently admitted it.
"You two... had a fight?" Ding Lisheng asked curiously. Ding Hanhan hadn't come out of her room since returning tonight.
"What's all the fuss about? We've never gotten along at all." Gu Feng thought to himself, but quickly said aloud that nothing was wrong.
"Hehe, Gu Feng, just accept this card generously. It's what you deserve. Our Ding family's most precious child is Han Han. I would gladly give up everything I have right now to save her life. So, you don't need to feel embarrassed." Ding Lisheng changed the subject, returning to the gold card, and without further ado, shoved it into Gu Feng's hand. "Han Han's temperament is just too stubborn. We don't know when this storm in the Ding family will pass. I hope you'll be more tolerant of her during this time, okay?"
"Alright." Gu Feng nodded. He was beholden to those who offered him favors. From now on, if she didn't bite him, he wouldn't bite her back.
"Okay, then you should rest well." After saying that, Ding Lisheng left.
The door closed behind him, and Gu Feng, still somewhat dazed, held the gold card in his hand.
He used to not care about the smell of money, but ever since he had the idea of severing ties with the Ding family, he felt that the money the Ding family gave him was a bit too much to handle.
But then I thought about it again and realized that my thought was really unnecessary.
Now that things have developed to this point, those who want to exterminate the entire Ding family probably already have the Ding family's mark on their foreheads.
As Old Man Ding said, he had unknowingly become involved in this conflict and had even chosen a side. It's like a baby crying—it's either poop or pee, and it's hard to clear his name.
Thinking of this, Gu Feng couldn't help but sigh. He had warned himself countless times not to get involved in such messy things, but he still had. Now he was stuck in a dilemma, unable to move forward or backward, which was truly a headache.
Just as he was getting annoyed, there was another knock on the door. Gu Feng couldn't help but feel annoyed with Ding Lisheng: Didn't you say no one would bother us? Why is it one after another, without any end in sight?
"Who is it?" Gu Feng asked patiently.
"Gu Feng, it's me." The advisor's voice rang out from outside the door.
Upon hearing that it was the clerk, Gu Feng dared not be presumptuous and quickly said, "Clerk, please come in."
The advisor pushed open the door and walked in, his face still bearing that signature smile: "How are you? Are you settling in alright?"
Gu Feng could only smile wryly. This man and Ding Lisheng were truly in cahoots. Not only did they say the same things, but their tone of voice was exactly the same.
"Well, judging from your expression, someone has probably already asked you that question." The old man is shrewd and wise; the advisor is indeed extraordinary, hitting the nail on the head.
"Did you need something, Master?" Gu Feng had no time for pleasantries and decided to get straight to the point.
"I'd like to talk to you about what happened at the hospital today. I hope it won't disturb your rest?" the clerk asked.
"What do you think?" Gu Feng really wanted to ask that back. But he knew that his advisor was exceptionally knowledgeable and wise, and it was truly a blessing to receive his guidance. So he quickly replied, "No, please speak freely, Advisor."
"Today's performance, at first glance, seemed crude, but I have to admit that the person behind it all is truly exceptionally intelligent." The advisor sighed softly. "Gu Feng, it seems your carefree and peaceful life is coming to an end. You've met a formidable opponent."
Gu Feng smiled bitterly. From the moment he met Old Man Ding, his life was destined to be anything but peaceful.
But he was still somewhat unwilling: "A formidable enemy? The advisor is probably exaggerating a bit."
This play is full of loopholes and flaws; as long as you put in the effort, it won't be difficult to find the person responsible.
Once he's exposed, do you think I can't deal with him?
After hearing this, the advisor smiled faintly: "Gu Feng, I have another piece of advice for you."
"Please enlighten me, Master," Gu Feng said respectfully, his expression turning solemn.
"Confidence is a good thing, but arrogance will cause trouble."
Gu Feng felt as if he had been struck dumb. The advisor was clearly warning him—saying that he was too arrogant. And the implication was almost explicitly telling him: you don't need to bother looking for the mastermind behind it all; you absolutely won't find them.
"What news has the advisor received this time?" Gu Feng became alert.
"Yes, someone just called me. The woman among the couple who were caught has already died from poisoning. The poison was hidden under her fingernails; it's a deadly poison that kills instantly upon contact with blood. From the moment she ingested the poison to the moment she breathed her last, the whole process took less than a minute. Even if the forensic doctor had been there, he could only watch her die; he had no chance to save her. It seems she was determined to die if she didn't succeed."
"What?" Gu Feng's eyes widened in shock, unable to process what he'd just heard for a long moment. After a while, he murmured, "...Why be so cruel to yourself? In my opinion, this matter isn't a big deal. At most, you could just take all the blame and never reveal the mastermind. Why go to such extremes?"
At this moment, Gu Feng's heart felt heavy, filled with gloom. He couldn't help but recall the saying: "Though I did not kill Bo Ren, Bo Ren died because of me." No matter how despicable that woman was, she was still a living, breathing human being.
"Perhaps she wanted to live. But the crimes she committed in the past, her clients, and the rules of her sect no longer allow her to live." The advisor's tone was extremely indifferent.
"Sect rules?" Gu Feng was completely confused.
"That's right. Every profession has its rules. Assassins are no exception. This woman comes from the 'Dark Gate'."
"A hidden door?" Gu Feng was even more confused.
The main gate, the front gate, the back gate, the side gate—why insist on using a hidden door?
