The discharge procedures were completed very quickly.

Su Qing folded the receipt and stuffed it into her pocket, then bent down to pick up the canvas bag at the foot of the bed.

The moment one hand touched the bag opening, the other sleeve was grabbed.

Jiang Ran stood beside her legs, tilting her head back, her fingers pinching a small piece of fabric from her sleeve. She didn't say anything, but the meaning was clear—don't leave me behind.

Su Qing glanced down at her, said nothing, switched the canvas bag to her left hand, and reached down with her right hand to pick up the little one.

Jiang Ran didn't even flinch this time; her arms automatically wrapped around Su Qing's neck, her face pressed against her shoulder, like a cat that had finally found its place.

As they passed the nurses' station, several nurses on duty waved to them.

Jiang Ran hesitated for a moment, then lifted her face from Su Qing's shoulder and whispered, "Goodbye, sisters."

The voice was still not loud, but the young nurse with glasses had already clutched her chest and turned to tell her colleague, "She spoke to me."

Su Qing hailed a taxi on the roadside, gave them an address, and then leaned back in her seat to scroll through her phone.

Jiang Ran sat next to her, her legs not even reaching the floor of the car, dangling in mid-air and swaying back and forth.

She turned her head to look at the roadside trees and buildings rushing past the car window, and her hand unconsciously reached out again to grasp the hem of Su Qing's dress.

After driving for more than ten minutes, Su Qing looked up at the window and suddenly said, "Driver, stop at that shopping mall up ahead."

The taxi pulled over at the entrance of the shopping mall.

Su Qing paid the money and led Jiang Ran through the revolving door.

Upon entering, you're greeted by the fragrance of cosmetic counters, warm air blows down from the central air conditioning vents overhead, and the floor is so polished you can see your reflection in it.

Jiang Ran had never been to such a large shopping mall before, and her pace unconsciously slowed down as she looked around.

Su Qing didn't give her much time to be stunned. She took her hand and led her upstairs to a children's clothing store.

The sales assistant was a woman in her thirties with a low ponytail and her eyes crinkled when she smiled. As soon as she saw Su Qing leading a child in a hospital gown in, she didn't ask any unnecessary questions but came up to ask what they needed.

Su Qing gently pushed Jiang Ran forward a step: "Pick out a few outfits for her, from the inside out."

Jiang Ran stood there, her hands clasped together, unsure of where to look.

The shop was filled with colorful little clothes and skirts, more than she had ever seen in her entire life.

The sales assistant squatted down to her eye level, smiled, and asked the little girl what color she liked. Jiang Ran opened her mouth, but before she could say anything, her ears turned red.

The sales assistant didn't rush her; she stood up, picked out a few items from the shelf, and showed them to Su Qing.

Su Qing rummaged through the items and picked out two dresses, one milky white with small floral patterns on the neckline.

She wore a light blue dress with a tulle skirt that was puffy. She held the dress up in front of Jiang Ran and examined it for a second.

"Give it a try."

Jiang Ran was led into the fitting room by the sales assistant. After a while, the curtain was pulled open a crack, revealing the sales assistant's smiling face first, and then Jiang Ran.

She was wearing that creamy white floral dress, unsure of what to do with her hands. She first tugged at the hem of her dress and then touched her neckline, keeping her head down and avoiding eye contact.

The thin arms and legs peeking out from under the hospital gown were finally made to look somewhat like a little girl by the skirt, and the light milky white color also brightened her skin, making it no longer look so heartbreakingly pale.

"Oh my!" the sales assistant clapped her hands. "This looks so good on the little girl, like a little princess."

Another woman who was buying clothes with her child passed by, glanced at the child, and casually remarked, "Whose child is this? They're so good-looking."

Jiang Ran's ears were so red they looked like they could bleed, and her head was almost buried in her chest, but there was a small curve at the corner of her mouth that was turning up.

Su Qing leaned against the shelf, arms crossed, and looked at it for a while.

"Turn around once."

Jiang Ran hesitated for a moment, then awkwardly twirled around on her tiptoes, her skirt fluttering up slightly before falling back down.

After turning around, she secretly glanced at Su Qing, but quickly lowered her head again after meeting Su Qing's gaze.

"Okay," Su Qing handed the card to the sales assistant, "I'll take this one, and wrap up that blue one too."

When Jiang Ran came out of the mall, she was wearing that new dress, and Su Qing had taken her to the hair salon to get her hair trimmed.

Previously, her hair was cut haphazardly, with uneven lengths and dry, split ends.

The hairdresser gave her a shoulder-length bob, with neatly trimmed bangs that revealed a pair of big, dark eyes.

Su Qing stood to the side watching the hairdresser finish cutting the hair, then nodded and paid.

Jiang Ran peeked at herself in the mirror at the hair salon, stared blankly for a while, then reached out and touched her neat bangs. Her fingertips touched her eyebrows, then she pulled back, as if afraid of damaging them.

In the supermarket on the first floor of the mall, Su Qing threw a few more boxes of strawberry milk, a bag of strawberries, two pairs of slippers, and a set of children's toothbrushes into her shopping cart. After thinking for a moment, she added a plush toy, a white lop-eared rabbit with ears that reached its feet and was very fluffy.

She shoved the rabbit into Jiang Ran's arms, pushed the shopping cart forward, and said casually, as if she were saying that the weather was nice today: "You can hug it to sleep tonight."

Jiang Ran hugged the rabbit, its ears rubbing against her chin. She lowered her head and buried her face in the soft fur, not lifting it up for a long time.

On the way back in a taxi, Jiang Ran sat in the back seat with shopping bags on her lap, a rabbit in her arms, and a new dress on her body, looking like she was in a dream.

She kept glancing down at her skirt and secretly touching the rabbit's ears to make sure they were real. Su Qing sat next to her, her elbows resting on the edge of the car window. She caught a glimpse of the little guy's actions out of the corner of her eye but didn't say anything.

The taxi drove into a residential compound. The security booth at the entrance was lit up, and the barrier gate automatically opened. The car circled between several high-rise residential buildings and stopped in front of an apartment building.

Su Qing got out of the car carrying large and small bags, while Jiang Ran followed behind her, holding a rabbit, looking up at the building in front of them.

The exterior walls were light gray, and the balconies had floor-to-ceiling windows. It was many times taller and much cleaner than the dilapidated residential building she had seen in the old town.

The elevator reached the eighth floor. Su Qing walked to a security door, the fingerprint lock beeped, and she opened the door, stepping aside to let Jiang Ran in.

The living room is very large.

This was Jiang Ran's first thought upon entering the room.

The room has light wood flooring, off-white walls, a gray fabric sofa against the wall, and a TV mounted on the wall opposite it.

Two potted green ivy plants were placed on the balcony, their vines hanging down and swaying gently in the wind.

The kitchen is open-plan, with pots and pans neatly stacked on the counter. There's also a takeout menu and two strawberry-shaped fridge magnets on the refrigerator door.

Su Qing placed the shopping bag in the entryway, changed into slippers, and then took out the newly bought pink slippers from the bag. Each slipper had a rabbit head on it, and she placed them next to Jiang Ran's feet.

Jiang Ran took off the cloth shoes she had worn in the hospital and slipped her feet into slippers.

It was the perfect size, and the fluffy rabbit head was smiling at her.

"Come here, let me show you your room."

Su Qing walked into the corridor, with Jiang Ran following behind her, holding a rabbit, her slippers making a soft pattering sound on the wooden floor.

There was a door on each side of the corridor. Su Qing pushed open the left door and pointed inside: "Yours."

The room is very large.

It's the same size as the room Su Qing lives in.

The window faces south, and the afternoon sunlight is streaming in through the half-drawn curtains, casting a golden patch of light on the floor.

A 1.5-meter bed was placed against the wall, covered with light pink sheets, and a bear-shaped cushion was placed on the pillow.

Beside the bed is a desk and chair, with a small mushroom-shaped table lamp on the desk.

The wardrobe had sliding doors. Su Qing walked over and pushed the door open. Several small-sized clothes were already hanging inside, which she had bought two days before being discharged from the hospital.

"The room next door is mine," Su Qing said, leaning against the doorframe and gesturing towards the other end of the corridor with her chin. "Knock anytime if you need anything."

Jiang Ran stood in the middle of the room, holding the white lop-eared rabbit, and slowly looked around the entire room.

Window, bed, desk, lamp, wardrobe, sunlight on the floor.

She turned to look at Su Qing, her mouth opened as if she wanted to say a lot, but in the end she only managed to squeeze out a very soft sentence: "...Is this mine?"

"What else?" Su Qing yawned, turned and walked towards the living room. "There are strawberries in the fridge, help yourself, I'll go cook."

She went into the kitchen, tied on an apron, opened the refrigerator, and started taking out ingredients.

Jiang Ran was still standing in that sun-drenched room, holding the rabbit. She looked down at her new dress, then at the rabbit-ear slippers on her feet, and then at the large bed with pink sheets and the mushroom-shaped lamp on the table. Suddenly, she felt a lump in her throat.

It wasn't the kind of sour feeling that makes you afraid and want to cry, but rather a warm, indescribable feeling that was stuck in your throat.

She buried her face in the rabbit's fur and took a deep breath.

Su Qing's voice came from the living room as she made a phone call: "Hello, is this the property management? Yes, eighth floor, please turn on the gas for me..."

Pigeons flew past the window, their wings flapping loudly.

The sunlight was lovely, shining on the two-bedroom apartment, on the figure in the kitchen figuring out how to light the gas stove, and on the girl standing in the middle of the small room holding a rabbit.
