The ugly woman rolled her eyes.

"You don't know anything," the ugly woman retorted. "He was so prestigious in the army. He was dragged down by these troublemakers in his family and had to take off his uniform. Wouldn't you be angry if you were in his shoes? Now he's working as a bricklayer on a construction site. What a huge fall from grace! How could he not resent it?"

Liu Chunhua choked for a moment.

"No matter how much I hate her, she's still my mother. Besides, my wife and children are at home," Liu Chunhua retorted, sticking her neck out. "How can someone earn money and then neglect their family?"

"Aunt Chunhua, he really didn't make a lot of money."

Shen Huijun quickly interrupted them, "These days, you have to pay upfront for all the work. Zhou Fang only dared to pay part of the money upfront and subcontract the job to him because he's reliable and has leadership skills."

It was a job I'd just taken on two months ago, so I didn't have much extra money.

Yu Pengfei personally told Xiang Dong and the others that all kinship ties were severed and that no one should tell their families.

Song Xianglan's face darkened.

"We won't tell his family about this." Song Xianglan stared at the women in front of her. "I don't need to say more about what kind of people Granny Yu and her family are."

If they found out that Yu Pengfei could still secure construction contracts in Shenzhen, these guys would definitely try to leech off him. If they cause a scene, will I even be able to keep my factory running?

The ugly woman immediately chimed in:

"I'm deaf today, I didn't hear anything."

Liu Chunhua nodded in agreement: "I will absolutely not utter a single word. I don't want to get myself into trouble."

Several people pushed open the gate and entered the courtyard.

Da Bao and Er Bao put their two large travel bags on the stone table.

"Erbao, get the broom." Dabao rolled up his sleeves. "Let's go clean the house first."

Song Xianglan quickly stopped her: "I've already cleaned the house for you. I even cleaned your Uncle Liu's new house beforehand. I was just waiting for you to come over and get a broom to finish it off."

"I'll go help with the chores." Youbao rushed over with his short legs and grabbed the broom leaning against the wall.

Song Xianglan pinched Youbao's cheek.

Fu Bao stood to the side, taking two steps back in disgust.

"I'm not sweeping," Fu Bao said, lifting her chin. "I'm going to go play with the older sisters from the Huang family."

Song Xianglan pointed outside the door.

"Follow the village road towards the sea," Song Xianglan pointed out. "The taro ball stall is open today; you have two or three younger relatives playing there."

Fu Bao took off the rabbit bag slung across her body and unzipped it.

He grabbed White Rabbit milk candy, chocolate, and beef jerky from the bag next to him and stuffed them all in.

The small bag was instantly stretched to its limit and became bulging.

"Why did you bring so much food?" the ugly woman asked.

"I'm the elder," Fu Bao patted the rabbit bag. "It's Chinese New Year, and elders have to give snacks to the younger generation as gifts."

I don't trust keeping an ugly woman around.

Grab Fu Bao's arm.

"Are you just letting her go alone?" Liu Chounu turned to look at Song Xianglan. "It's almost New Year's, and there are too many people in the village to be suspicious."

"It's alright, they're all right under our noses."

Song Xianglan waved her hand, "Go ahead. Come back for dinner soon."

Fu Bao dashed out of the yard in a flash.

Da Bao and Er Bao also took You Bao to the next room.

Shen Huijun opened the travel bag on the ground and pulled out several plastic bags.

"Aunt Liu, Aunt Chunhua, Aunt Wang. This is roast goose, char siu, and pastries brought back from Shenzhen." Shen Huijun handed over the bag, "It includes Da Hua's portion too, you can take it back and have a taste."

The three of them took the bag and couldn't stop smiling.

"We've come all this way and it's costing us money," said Liu Chounu. "Then let's go back first and put our things down. We'll go to Yu Kun's place later to help him sort things out."

The three of them left the courtyard.

He closed the gate behind him.

Only Song Xianglan and Shen Huijun remained in the courtyard.

Song Xianglan pulled Shen Huijun into the house.

"Tell me the truth," Song Xianglan said solemnly. "Is Yu Pengfei a reliable person? He was forcibly discharged from the army, and his file shows a disciplinary record."

You know how much money I've invested in this factory. If he causes any trouble on the construction site, I'll have to pour a lot of effort into it too.

Shen Huijun took the clothes out of her bag and piled them on the sofa.

"Mom, don't worry about using it."

Shen Huijun stopped what she was doing. "Xiang Dong said he did bear some responsibility for what happened that time. But the root of the problem lies entirely with his mother and his wife."

Song Xianglan listened with a frown.

"Those women were bullying everyone in the family compound, taking advantage of others and causing trouble, making a scene every day." Shen Huijun sneered. "The military leaders thought that he couldn't even control his own mother and wife, which was a bad influence. It just so happened that there was a downsizing, and he was the first one to be cut."

Song Xianglan sighed.

Sit down on the sofa.

"To have a mother like that is the worst luck imaginable," Song Xianglan shook her head.

"So now he guards against his family members like he's guarding against thieves."

Shen Huijun folded the empty bags. "He suffered a lot in Shenzhen, he's really tough. At least this project is fine, and Zhou Fang often goes over to check on it."

After hearing this, Song Xianglan felt relieved.

"As long as the other person doesn't have bad intentions, it's fine."

Song Xianglan stood up. "Let's move the luggage upstairs. Will Da Bao and Er Bao sleep at our place tonight, or go back to the new house next door?"

Shen Huijun picked up a net bag and walked towards the stairs.

"They said they were going back to their own home." Shen Huijun followed behind. "I heard from Congying that they've become much more lively. I've observed that Da Bao and Er Bao get along very well with Congying; you can't tell at all that she's a stepmother."

"They say that Zhou Fang was always busy before, and Cong Ying always helped take care of them. Now that Zhou Fang and Cong Ying are together, the two children are happier than anyone else."

The two went up to the second floor.

Shen Huijun placed the net on the bed and turned to close the door.

As soon as the door closed, Shen Huijun spoke up as if she had just remembered something.

"Mom, there's something else." Shen Huijun frowned. "Da Bao and Er Bao's maternal grandmothers are causing trouble."

Song Xianglan's hand, which was tidying up the clothes, hung in mid-air.

"Didn't she abandon these two children a long time ago?" Song Xianglan turned around. "When she was encouraging them to divorce, demand the house and money, she showed no affection whatsoever."

Shen Huijun walked to the edge of the bed and sat down.

"A few days ago, she asked around and found my mother's place." Shen Huijun's face showed disgust. "She immediately asked for the two children's contact information and address. She said she was their maternal grandmother, and blood was thicker than water. She couldn't let the children lose contact with their maternal grandparents."

"She also said she had to look after An Xiyang's two children, fearing that Zhou Fang might abuse them."

Song Xianglan mocked:

"Blood is thicker than water? Why didn't she say that before? When the two children went to Haishi, she insulted Zhou Fang to her face and encouraged her daughter to divorce so that the two children would have no home. Why didn't she, as their maternal grandmother, mention the importance of blood ties?"

Back then, Zhou Fang and An Xiyang had feelings for each other. If they hadn't divorced, the family of four would have lived a comfortable life.

"Tormenting my daughter is like torturing gold and silver treasures. Now that Zhou Fang has money, she's come crawling back, drawn by the scent."

Shen Huijun nodded.

"My mom saw through her thoughts and said that I wasn't in contact with Zhou Fang in Shenzhen, and that Xiang Dong was busy all day and didn't say much to us. I just took care of the children every day. An Jia's mother was unhappy on the phone and said that my mom had become materialistic," Shen Huijun said.
