Late at night.

The lights were on in Song Xiangmei's house.

Song Xiangmei and her third sister, Song Xianglan, lay on the same bed, tossing and turning, unable to sleep.

"Da Hua and Xiao Chuan have been gone for most of the day, why is there still no news?" Song Xiangmei sighed. "It's remote in the mountains. If the Tang family refuses to release them, it's uncertain whether those few will be able to come back."

Song Xianglan turned over.

"You're worrying too much. Xiao Chuan has been training outside for years and knows who to turn to when he encounters difficulties. Chunxia and Dahua are fearless tigresses. Tang Datian's abilities won't cause any trouble."

"That's Tang Datian's territory after all. Even a powerful dragon can't suppress a local snake." Song Xiangmei sat up, leaning against the headboard. "One of them is greedy for money, and the other is hot-tempered and insists on fighting if they don't pay. This matter is going to be difficult to resolve."

After saying that, he stared at Song Xianglan.

Song Xianglan did not respond.

Song Xiangmei's brows furrowed more and more tightly.

"Third Sister, why is my life so miserable? I gave birth to six sons, four of whom are good-for-nothings." Song Xiangmei slapped her thigh. "Sometimes I think maybe our mother-son relationship has come to an end. I should just pretend I never gave birth to them."

"Having five daughters is good, but Erhua is even more miserable."

"It's good that you've figured it out."

"I've figured it out, but what about Erhua?" Song Xiangmei asked, her face full of worry. "She's still young; she should remarry eventually. If she stays alone, it's fine now, but what will happen when she gets old?"

"She's a person who's hurt both physically and emotionally. Let alone living with a man, she's even afraid to enter a room with him."

"Should we really let her grow old alone? Perhaps the next one..."

Song Xianglan threw off the quilt and sat up straight.

"Can't you live without a man?" she raised her voice. "Just how good is that sausage that you insist on eating it by peeling it off your skin?"

Song Xiangmei was stunned by the scolding:

"What kind of talk is that? It's pitiful to be old and have no one to accompany you..."

"What companions?" Song Xianglan interrupted sharply, "Erhua and Fangfang run their own shop now, earning their own money and spending it as they please."

Three generations of five women lived a more comfortable life than anyone else behind closed doors.

"If Fangfang wants to take that step in the future, that's her business. Her situation is different from Erhua's. Please don't force Erhua to take that step."

"I didn't force her."

"Don't keep nagging if you're not being forced to." Song Xianglan poked her older sister's shoulder. "I think you're just muddle-headed. It's no wonder Song Xianghe has to teach you a lesson."

"You want to find a companion for your old age?"

Song Xiangmei quickly waved her hand, "I'm too old to be taking care of someone else's whole family. Erhua is still young..."

"Don't force Erhua to do things you don't want to do yourself. If you don't want to take care of someone else's family, Erhua will be even less willing to do so. Women aren't born to be beasts of burden, to be eager to serve other people's grandchildren."

Song Xiangmei was speechless.

My sister's yelling actually dispelled the gloom in my heart.

A loud rumble of a motorcycle came from outside the door.

The sound was getting closer.

It finally stopped in front of the courtyard gate.

"They're back." Song Xiangmei perked up and quickly put on her coat.

Song Xianglan also put on her clothes and got out of bed.

Just as the two opened the door to the main room, the courtyard gate was pushed open.

Chunxia was the first to squeeze into the yard. "Mom, is Lele asleep?"

"She slept with her second aunt." Song Xiangmei went up to her. "Lele refused to sleep with me last night and wouldn't let go of her second aunt."

The motorcycle was parked in the yard.

Da Hua helped Xiao Yan out of the car from the back seat.

Hurried footsteps echoed down the stairs.

Wen Tao and Wen Qiang rushed down from the second floor in two strides.

"Xiao Yan," Wen Tao called out, his eyes reddening.

Xiao Yan stood awkwardly in the courtyard.

The large brick building was bright and clean, and she held the hem of her clothes in her hands, not daring to take a step for a long time.

Wen Qiang ran up to her, "Little sister, they didn't hit you, did they?"

Xiao Yan shook her head.

Nie Xiaochuan pushed the motorcycle under the shed, removed the key, and kicked the ladder up.

"Didn't you encounter anyone blocking your way?" Song Xianglan asked Chunxia.

"We almost got into a fight," Chunxia said excitedly. "Tang Datian was shamelessly demanding a thousand yuan in child support, but the village secretary over there was a retired veteran. As soon as he heard that Fifth Brother was a martyr, he immediately sided with us. We brought Xiaoyan back without spending a single penny."

"I originally thought I would have to go to the local government to resolve this, and I didn't want to give that scoundrel a single penny."

Da Hua sat listlessly on the stool.

I didn't want to move for half a day.

Song Xiangmei warmly took Xiaoyan's hand, her eyes full of affection. "Xiaoyan, go take a bath. There's hot water in the kitchen."

Chunxia turned around to go to her room to get her old clothes.

"I'll give Xiaoyan a few of my clothes to wear."

"Don't bother looking anymore. This afternoon, your third aunt accompanied me to town and bought new clothes for the three siblings. They've all been washed and dried."

"Oh, Mom, you've gone to so much trouble. I was just saying I'd take Xiaoyan to town to buy clothes tomorrow," Chunxia said with a smile.

"It won't cost much. Business is doing alright, and I have plenty of money." Song Xiangmei looked at the three children in front of her, tears welling up in her eyes. "Of course I love my grandchildren."

Xiao Yan's eyes were warm.

"Grandma," Xiao Yan called softly, then looked at Song Xianglan, "Third Aunt."

Song Xianglan looked at Xiao Yan's dry, thin face: "This child is too thin. Go take a hot bath and change her clothes."

Nie Xiaochuan rubbed his stomach beside him.

"Mom, get me something to eat. I'm starving."

"It's all ready." Song Xiangmei walked briskly towards the kitchen. "I was worried you wouldn't have anything to eat when you got back. I specially killed a chicken and made red mushroom soup tonight. Now I just need to cook some noodles."

Song Xianglan also went to the kitchen.

Only the Nie family remained in the main room.

Da Hua slumped on the sofa, her legs stretched out straight, her whole body sprawled out like mud, too exhausted to utter a single word.

Erhua came out of the inner room wearing a coat.

"Xiao Yan is back?" Er Hua walked up to Da Hua and patted her arm. "Big sister, go back to your room and sleep."

Da Hua: "Second Sister, get me some water to wash my hands and feet. My bones feel like they're going to fall apart from all this jolting in this carriage; I can't move an inch. I'm getting old, after all; I can't take the bumps."

"Go back inside, I'll go fetch water." Erhua responded and went to fetch water in the yard.

Wen Tao and Wen Qiang stood at the top of the stairs, their eyes fixed on Nie Xiaochuan.

"Sixth Uncle," Wentao spoke, his voice a little hoarse, "How is my mother?"

Nie Xiaochuan poured himself a glass of cold water and drank it down.

He spoke in a rather irritable manner:

"Your mother is afraid that man won't even be able to take care of the children he gave birth to."

Wen Qiang clenched his fists.

"That man hits people." Wen Tao's eyes were cold. "When we were very young, he hit my mother. After we grew up, every time he made a move, Wen Qiang and I would beat Da Ping and his two brothers to death."

"If he hits my mother once, we'll hit his son three times."

Wen Tao gritted his teeth, "Afterwards, Tang Datian was afraid that someone would really die, so he would never dare to do anything in front of us again. But he already hated us to the core and wished we would get lost."

After hearing these words, Ogawa felt a mix of emotions.

The two children left behind by the fifth son have been struggling to survive in this kind of environment since they were young.

"I hate men who lay a hand on women the most," Nie Xiaochuan sneered. "But she chose this path herself, so she can't blame anyone else."

The sound of water came from inside the room, and Erhua carried a basin of hot water into the room and placed it next to Dahua's feet.

Dahua took off her shoes and socks and stepped her feet in.

"My second sister still loves me the most."

The aroma of steaming noodles wafted from the kitchen.

Song Xiangmei came out carrying two large bowls of noodles, which contained chicken, red mushrooms, and eggs.

Xiao Yan had just finished showering and changed into a set of dry, new clothes.

After the layer of dust on her face was washed away, her delicate features were revealed.

Song Xiangmei beckoned, "Xiao Yan, come over and have some noodles."
