Chapter 57 Life with the Army
When Shen's mother arrived, it was five o'clock in the afternoon. Gu Panpan was nearly six months pregnant. Her daughter-in-law's round belly looked like she was eight months along.
Shen's mother asked her son worriedly, "Have you gone to the hospital? Why is your belly so big?"
Shen Yue comforted him, "They checked it, and the hospital said it's twins."
"Then you should have called me so I could have come earlier." Shen's mother asked Gu Panpan, "Panpan, what would you like to eat? Mom will make it for you."
Gu Panpan quickly replied, "No need, Mom, I'm not hungry yet. You should rest well after getting off the train."
Mrs. Shen is getting on in years, and she was indeed tired after traveling by train for several days. "Okay, I'll go back to my room and lie down for a while. Remember to call Mom if Panpan needs anything!"
The arrival of Shen's mother finally put Shen Yue's mind at ease. His wife was so heavily pregnant, and there was no one else at home; even though Shen Yue had informed the neighbors, he was still worried.
Gu Panpan is now very inconvenient to move around, and she needs to go to the toilet more and more frequently because she is pregnant with twins. It would be wonderful if her mother-in-law could come and take care of her.
A good night's sleep.
Shen's mother would get up early to prepare breakfast, tidy up the house and vegetable garden; then she would take the money and coupons from the drawer to buy groceries and cook lunch; after lunch, she would take her daughter-in-law for a walk. When they got tired, they would rest, and then continue walking.
Mother Shen did this for her daughter-in-law's own good, fearing she wouldn't have the strength to give birth. Gu Panpan understood what was going on, and gritted her teeth and remained silent, sweating profusely despite the March weather.
After exercising for two hours, Shen's mother took her daughter-in-law back home to rest and take a two-hour nap. Shen's mother then washed clothes and prepared some steamed eggs, fruit, or snacks for her eldest daughter-in-law to eat when she woke up.
At six o'clock, Shen's mother was busy preparing dinner. After Shen Yue returned, he took over from his mother to take care of his wife.
On June 5th, Gu Panpan gave birth to twins, a boy and a girl, at the hospital. Looking at the two children, who were both small with rosy skin, Shen's mother could still see the resemblance to Shen Yue in their features.
The troops are far from towns, making it inconvenient to purchase supplies. Not to mention scarce resources, which are simply unavailable here.
If it weren't for his younger siblings sending him baby bottles and formula, the two children would have gone hungry. In the past three months, Shen Yue has gone to town eight times, but still can't buy formula. The supply and marketing cooperative doesn't have baby bottles either.
When the baby was a month old, we received gifts from Xu Jing'an and Shen He. Brown sugar, milk powder, and beautiful floral fabric were all considered valuable gifts in those days. The little stroller, in particular, was a real eye-catcher.
When Gu Panpan saw it, her heart skipped a beat. She quickly asked, "Mom, where did you buy this? I've never seen it before!"
Mrs. Shen wiped the toy car with a cloth: "How could we afford to buy one! We had it made by our neighbor. When I was looking after Zhuangzhuang, your father was worried that I would get tired, so he came up with this idea. It took more than a month to revise the blueprints again and again before we finally got someone to make it."
"My dad feels sorry for you!" Gu Panpan breathed a sigh of relief after hearing this. She took out her notebook to write down the full moon gifts she received, and after calculating what Shen Yue had given to Shen He, she realized that her family had still lost out.
The main issue is that she only has two children, while her second child's family has three. After thinking it over, she decided to focus on getting better so that she could have another child around the child's first birthday. This way, her mother wouldn't be able to bring up leaving again, and she could relax a bit.
Before we knew it, it was December, and the children were exactly eight months old on the day of Lichun (the beginning of spring).
"Eldest son, it's almost Chinese New Year, and I'm planning to go back to see your father before the New Year." Having not seen her husband for over a year, Shen's mother was missing him terribly.
"Okay, Mom, when are you leaving? I'll book your ticket." Shen Yue was also worried about his father.
Mother Shen: "Seven days later."
But seven days later, Shen's mother failed to return. Gu Panpan was pregnant again!
Seeing her eldest daughter-in-law nauseous and vomiting from pregnancy, Shen's mother had no choice but to stay at the military base for the New Year.
Knowing that Shen's mother had given up the idea of returning, Gu Panpan breathed a sigh of relief. It was unlikely that Shen's mother would return this time. Moreover, her mother-in-law was getting older every year, and the one-child policy was about to be implemented; if she wanted to have more children, she needed to hurry.
After becoming pregnant, Gu Panpan's already insufficient milk supply decreased even further, so she simply weaned her. The first few months of pregnancy were unstable, but once the twins were stable, they were just learning to walk.
Not only did Shen's mother have to take care of her two children, but she also had to find time to look after her daughter-in-law. The two pregnancies were so close together that Gu Panpan's body hadn't fully recovered. This pregnancy was clearly more difficult than the last one.
"Ugh—" "Wah—wah—"
Now, every day when Shen's mother opens her eyes, she is surrounded by these sounds.
As soon as Gu Panpan wakes up, you can hear her vomiting.
To be honest, the difficulty of this pregnancy was beyond her imagination. She couldn't eat anything, and even a sip of water would cause her to vomit reflexively. Now she only felt weak all over, and she had to hold onto the wall to go to the toilet every day.
She couldn't eat anything, and her legs were as weak as noodles. Seeing her eldest daughter-in-law's condition, Shen's mother knew she couldn't delay any longer.
"Boss, take your wife to the hospital. Her morning sickness is too bad. The doctors in this residential compound aren't exactly gynecologists. Panpan, don't listen to the advice of those old women around here. Everyone's different, right?"
Gu Panpan is now so weak she can barely stand and needs help to get up. She feels dizzy and her vision goes black whenever she lifts her head even slightly. She's no longer refusing to go to the hospital.
She initially thought that morning sickness was nothing serious and would get better in a few months. Who would have thought it would become this severe?
Her stomach has now developed a conditioned reflex, making it even harder to swallow. And every time she vomits, her abdominal muscles tighten and strain, and she now clearly feels soreness and pain in her lower abdomen.
Shen Yue took leave and drove his wife to the city hospital. The doctors there didn't have any better options, but she showed signs of miscarriage and could only be hospitalized to try and save the pregnancy, receiving glucose infusions for nutrition.
With her eldest daughter-in-law gone, Shen's mother actually breathed a sigh of relief. She was already swamped with her two children, and taking care of her eldest daughter-in-law on top of that made her feel overwhelmed.
She had never been this tired before, having raised Zhuangzhuang's three grandchildren. Physically exhausted, she felt a growing urge to go crazy. The incessant crying of the two children was driving her crazy.
The baby, who is just over one year old, drinks formula and eats complementary food every day. If you don't pay attention for a moment, he will wet his pants. You also have to take apart and wash his little blankets from time to time. Not to mention that he is learning to walk at this time, and Shen's mother has never straightened her back.
If it weren't for the small cart that her youngest daughter-in-law brought over, Shen's mother felt she would have collapsed from exhaustion.
Before, the two children slept with their mother at night, but now they are under Shen's care 24 hours a day, and she doesn't even have time to breathe.
Shen's mother was even more disgusted by her eldest son's scheming ways. But no matter what, her eldest son's wife was working hard to have children for him, so she couldn't say anything. Besides, she understood her eldest son's difficulties and was happy to help him as much as possible.
