A whirlwind marriage: The real heiress marries a warlord.
Chapter 044 No Plans to Change Wives
Qin Yan and Cheng Tianxun rested for a while, chatted for a bit, and then got up to take a shower.
When Qin Yan returned to the bedroom, Cheng Tianxun was looking at her pajamas.
"The buttons are all torn and can't be sewn back on. Let's buy new ones," he said.
Qin Yan: "Okay."
Cheng Tianxun: "Are they easy to buy? They look like they come from a foreign trading company."
"It's alright, I have plenty of bathrobes to wear. I'll go check later, and if they don't have the same one, I'll get a different one," she said.
Cheng Tianxun: "I'll have my adjutant give you some money so you can go and buy some more winter clothes."
Qin Yan quickly said no need.
He gave her 100,000 silver dollars last time, which was enough for her to wear clothes for the rest of her life.
The couple went to bed, with Qin Yan sleeping on the left and the light switch on the right. She asked Cheng Tianxun to turn off the light.
"Qin Yan".
Seeing that he was half-sitting, Qin Yan simply sat up as well: "You seem to have something very important to discuss?"
"Let's build a new mansion. Do you have a place you like?" Cheng Tianxun asked.
Just now downstairs, Xiang Cenyan pointed out that Cheng Tianxun's house was like an "official residence," and Qin Yan lived there, with no private space.
The governor's official residence was very large, divided into front and back courtyards; the back courtyard also occupied a large area, with several small courtyards in addition to the main building.
The warlord's wife lived in the official residence without being disturbed, but Qin Yan was not.
"Are you informing me, or are you discussing this with me?" Qin Yan asked.
Cheng Tianxun: "Let's discuss it."
"You've secured the entire street around this villa; it's very safe and lively. The distance to the Governor's Mansion and my newspaper office is just right," Qin Yan said.
Cheng Tianxun raised an eyebrow.
His carefully crafted "fortress" received recognition, which made him even happier.
"The only downside is that having a lady of the house has disrupted your decor. I did feel a little awkward after you came home," Qin Yan said.
Cheng Tianxun: "We can set up somewhere else quickly. Having a front and back yard would make it more comfortable to live in."
Qin Yan remained silent for a moment.
Cheng Tianxun: "You don't need to worry about me causing trouble..."
"Young Marshal, we've only been married for a year, and we don't have any children or feelings for each other," Qin Yan said.
Cheng Tianxun said in a calm tone: "Changing houses doesn't mean I'm changing wives."
He added, "Before getting married, I hadn't considered how my family would live. Things I hadn't experienced before, my imaginations were always different from reality."
Now I understand. Even if I had a different wife, I still had to live. It has nothing to do with you, so you don't need to feel bad.
Qin Yan thought to himself, "Even if you change your wife, you still have to buy another house, right?"
Would a newlywed couple really want to live in the house of an older couple?
This is not something that can be accomplished overnight.
"If we're talking about discussion, I'd prefer not to move. You don't spend many days at home each month, so it's really unnecessary to move to another house just for those few days," Qin Yan said.
Cheng Tianxun felt a bit like smoking.
He was convinced by Qin Yan; moving to a new house was indeed troublesome. Not the renovations or the location, but the security. The new defenses would be easily breached.
But he wanted to change.
Just as Xiang Cenyan said, this house "doesn't distinguish between public and private matters." Even a few days would make Qin Yan feel uncomfortable.
Husband and wife are a lifelong relationship, and Qin Yan is a wife who is especially to his liking, so why should he make her feel disgusted by trivial matters?
"Rome wasn't built in a day," and no relationship breaks down because of a single event. It's usually the unintentional little troubles that slowly make people lose heart.
"...I might be spending more time in the South City next year," Cheng Tianxun said.
He added, "First, choose a house. Renovate and fortify it, taking six months to ensure complete security. What do you think?"
He added, "I'm not giving you an order; I'm discussing this with you. I hope to persuade you to change your previous decision."
Qin Yan: "Alright, then I'll change what I said earlier. Changing it would be beneficial for me. I just don't want this matter to be caused by me."
She is very easy to talk to.
If she realizes she's wrong, she can correct it immediately; she won't insist on doing it just for the sake of "dignity."
Cheng Tianxun: "Of course it's not because of you. Besides, even if it were because of you, what difference would it make?"
"If you give, I will repay you. I am somewhat powerless to resist," Qin Yan said.
"Being a good Mrs. Cheng is the best reward. Qin Yan, I am very satisfied with you now," Cheng Tianxun said.
He would be more satisfied if the innocent one got out of there sooner.
"I'll have my adjutant get the map later, you can choose a few places, and then we'll go look at the houses," Cheng Tianxun said.
Qin Yan said, "Okay."
It was getting late, and Qin Yan yawned twice. Cheng Tianxun then said, "Let's go to sleep. Leave the trivial matters to the adjutant."
The couple lay down.
The next day, Cheng Tianxun got up very early as usual and went to the governor's mansion.
Qin Yan then rushed to the newspaper office.
Ling Manyun looked listless.
"...Did you not enjoy your picnic yesterday?" Qin Yan asked her.
"Qin Yao said that Commander Qin sent a telegram to the Cheng and Xiang families, and that the three places are preparing to train troops in Yicheng, near Nancheng, in response to the Northern government's troop reduction," Ling Manyun said.
Qin Yan: "This is a military secret. Did he tell you?"
"I don't want to hear it either," Ling Manyun said. "I told you he didn't come north to see me. But did you realize he wasn't leaving anytime soon?"
Qin Yan: "From preparation and training to completion, it will probably take three to five months."
"He'll be here for three to five months!" Ling Manyun said.
Ling Manyun hated Qin Yao.
If she didn't care about him, she wouldn't hate him.
He was so emotional that he would sit downstairs from her every night, and she would suffer from insomnia until midnight.
This prevented her from going to work.
Ling Manyun berated herself for being so weak-willed, unable to control her distraction because of him. She was furious and wished he would leave immediately.
"...Commander Cheng agreed. I pressed Xiang Cenyan for details, and although he said it was a secret and he couldn't tell me, he gave me a hint that the matter had been settled," Ling Manyun said.
She asked Qin Yan, "Does Cheng Tianxun have a way to deal with him?"
Qin Yan: "..."
Before she could say anything, Ling Manyun, seeing that twenty minutes had been wasted, felt quite pained: "Let's get started."
Sometimes Qin Yan couldn't tell whether he or Ling Manyun was the owner of the newspaper.
Anyway, Qin Yan wouldn't say anything when Ling Manyun was slacking off; every time she was distracted or late, Ling Manyun would reprimand her with her eyes.
Ling Manyun was much stricter than Qin Yan in terms of work hours and personnel evaluation.
Everyone at the newspaper knows that if you can plead with the editor-in-chief, she'll agree to some things as long as they're not too unreasonable, even paying wages on credit. But asking Miss Ling for leave or delaying the manuscript is extremely difficult.
Miss Ling never loses her temper. She simply sits quietly and listens to you speak, turning on the office lights. Her gaze is as piercing as the light bulbs, leaving you nowhere to hide.
Even if she wanted to complain, it sounded like she was lying. The more she talked, the less confident she became. No one could gain sympathy from Miss Ling.
Don't get into Miss Ling's hands unless you have to.
No one knew that Miss Ling also had her own troubles. Even so, it didn't stop her from urging the president to start work immediately, making every second count.
Just as Qin Yan was sorting things out and preparing to handle them one by one, the phone rang.
It turned out that her mother-in-law had called her.
"Come out for coffee," the mother-in-law said on the phone. "I'll have the adjutant pick you up."
Qin Yan agreed, without asking further questions.
She thought it was probably related to Cheng Tianxun's return to the city.
Cheng Tianxun returned more than a month early; something big must have happened.
