A whirlwind marriage: The real heiress marries a warlord.
Chapter 023 Insisting on Accompanying Her
The military doctor explained to Qin Yan.
"Young Madam, you just hit your head. It would be very dangerous if you fell into a deep coma."
Qin Yan resigned himself to his fate.
She cooperated with whatever Western medicine treatment she received.
Therefore, when the warlord's wife, the second concubine, and the eldest young mistress arrived, Qin Yan looked very weak and pale.
She hadn't slept well and needed to conserve her energy for thinking; she was barely breathing.
"Ayan has suffered." Second Concubine Su Yaxi said with concern, "These petty thieves are courting death, daring to plot against the young marshal and his wife in the city."
He added, "We need to find the people behind them and kill a bunch of them. Only by making an example of them can we suppress these restless people."
She took Qin Yan's hand.
Qin Yan's hands were soft and cold, and her voice was even softer and weaker: "The warlord only had three sons, and he only managed to control the military government by killing them one by one. Second Madam is right, our family is connected by blood and kinship, and no one can take chances."
The second concubine's eyes flashed, and she comforted him, "The warlord knows all about it, so don't worry."
"Yes, the warlord is the most impartial," Qin Yan said.
The eldest daughter-in-law's name is Tao Jingxin, and she is the daughter of Commander Tao.
Like the second concubine, she possessed the gentle and virtuous qualities of a lady from a prominent family.
She also comforted Qin Yan several times.
Compared to the two women, Qin Yan's serious mother-in-law was rather cold and aloof.
After the two women left, the warlord's wife sat down beside them.
"You look terrible," she said.
"I threw up yesterday, and I didn't eat anything this morning. I have no appetite, and I didn't sleep well either," Qin Yan said.
The warlord's wife: "What would you like to eat? I'll have the head kitchen prepare it and send it over."
Qin Yan didn't refuse her kindness: "I'd like to drink porridge."
The warlord's wife nodded slightly: "Eat something soft, it's good for your stomach."
She seemed to want to ask about what happened last night, but felt it was unnecessary to disturb Qin Yan's rest, so she said, "You're tired, take a rest."
Qin Yan said yes.
By mid-morning, the wives of high-ranking military officers had come to visit him in the hospital; they were well-informed and efficient. None of these wives of officials were simple-minded.
Qin Yan claimed that her injuries were too severe and asked the nurses to tell them that she was temporarily unable to receive guests.
Anyway, she had met the second concubine, her sister-in-law, and her mother-in-law, and the news had spread, so her goal was achieved.
She didn't have the energy to deal with any more people.
At noon, the cook from the governor's mansion brought porridge and a few light side dishes.
It's chicken congee, cooked until thick and delicious.
Qin Yan slept through the night in the afternoon, and the nurse didn't push her anymore.
When Qin Yan woke up, it was evening, and the sunset was streaming in through the window; she could smell the aroma of food and hear a man's voice.
"You can also take a pulse?"
"I first studied traditional Chinese medicine and then went abroad to study Western medicine. The young lady is fine; she just needs to rest for a few days. As long as she doesn't feel dizzy or vomit, she can be discharged," the military doctor said.
Qin Yan turned her face away.
Cheng Tianxun saw her and walked a few steps to her bedside: "Are you awake?"
She blinked. "When did you arrive?"
"We just arrived."
The military doctor left the ward.
Cheng Tianxun helped Qin Yan sit up and asked her, "Are you hungry now? I brought some food with me; it was made in the main kitchen of the Governor's Mansion. My mother asked me to bring it."
Qin Yan nodded.
Cheng Tianxun set out the food and helped her out of bed.
Qin Yan was no longer dizzy and was able to walk steadily after getting out of bed.
"Didn't the warlord lock you up?" Qin Yan asked.
"He scolded me in front of all the generals, just to put on a show. The people who burned to death yesterday were identified as royalists," Cheng Tianxun said.
"Then it wasn't stalking, it was assassination. Luckily you reacted quickly," Qin Yan said.
Cheng Tianxun: "They followed me for several days, starting from the city hall."
He seemed to be testing Qin Yan on purpose, or perhaps showing off, "Since you're a member of the royalist party, guess who your master is."
Qin Yan: "I can't guess right now."
"Is it that you can't guess, or that you don't want to say?" he asked.
Qin Yan really couldn't guess it.
Cheng Tianxun stopped talking and said, "Let's eat."
Dinner was alright; Qin Yan had only eaten some rice porridge for lunch and was starving.
She ate two bowls of rice.
Cheng Tianxun breathed a sigh of relief: "Looks like you're alright."
Qin Yan: "I just bumped my head."
"You can train with me."
"I'm still in good shape," Qin Yan said. "I'm not weak, it's just that you were driving too fast."
Cheng Tianxun offered a few words in his own defense.
After dinner, night fell over half of the military hospital, and Qin Yan wanted to take a walk.
The couple strolled slowly along the path behind the military hospital, still discussing whether Qin Yan was weak or Cheng Tianxun was driving too recklessly.
Qin Yan works for a newspaper, and arguing is her specialty. She can find a way to refute every word Cheng Tianxun says.
Cheng Tianxun, however, became more determined with each setback. The more he couldn't win against her, the more excited he became, and he talked to her endlessly.
The two strolled along the path to the entrance of the military hospital, and then walked back along the bluestone path in front of the entrance.
Half an hour later, with no clear winner, they stopped talking because they ran into an acquaintance.
"Young Marshal."
Qin Yan met Lan Muhe.
The late autumn night was chilly, and Lan Muhe wore a warm cashmere cloak and a long fringed shawl, looking fashionable and elegant.
Cheng Tianxun frowned slightly.
He nodded, intending to walk past, when Lan Muhe spoke up: "My grandmother wasn't feeling well and was admitted to the hospital this afternoon. Young Madam, it seems you're also hospitalized here? Are you feeling unwell?"
Qin Yan's eyes were indifferent: "I was hit by a car."
"How is it now?" Lan Muhe asked with concern, even taking a few steps forward.
Cheng Tianxun: "How is she now? You can't see?"
Lan Muhe stood there awkwardly, then calmed herself down and said, "I'll go see my grandmother first, so as not to disturb you two."
She turned and left.
Cheng Tianxun said she had no tact.
Qin Yan remained silent, as if he had something to say.
Cheng Tianxun: "From now on, you should avoid the Lan family at all costs. You should just move out of Nancheng. You shouldn't have agreed to such an unreasonable request."
He added, "I'll talk to Lan Changming another day. There's a limit to bullying; the Lan family has gone too far."
Qin Yan: "I'll talk to him next time I have time."
Cheng Tianxun: "I'm afraid you won't understand."
"Newspapers make a living by engaging in verbal battles," Qin Yan said. "There's nothing I can't explain, only things I don't want to say."
Cheng Tianxun: "That's true. Did I win just now?"
"no."
"Then I give up. I'm not going to argue with you newspaper people," he said. "I'm tired, my mouth is sore from talking."
Qin Yan: "You flatter me."
Cheng Tianxun: "..."
That evening, Cheng Tianxun stayed with Qin Yan at the military hospital.
Qin Yan repeatedly told him, "The army doctor said I'm no longer at risk of falling into a coma, so please don't push me at night."
Cheng Tianxun asked, "Am I just being impulsive?"
He was so worried last night, waking up every two hours to check if she had fainted; he didn't sleep well at all. Did he really want that?
He was injured himself and never listened to the doctor's advice. But he carefully remembered everything the doctor said about her.
For whom?
They don't recognize a kind heart.
He glanced at her.
Qin Yan ignored his complaints and went to sleep, saying, "Turn off the light."
Cheng Tianxun silently turned off the light, and then Qin Yan felt a weight behind him as he squeezed in.
Qin Yan: "Weren't you sleeping on a cot?"
There was a small cot on the floor, enough for him to sleep on by himself.
He insisted on accompanying him.
Qin Yan can manage on her own; she's not in any serious condition, and getting up at night won't cause any problems. Besides, there are medical staff on night duty.
Cheng Tianxun: "A legally married couple, Qin Yan."
"The bed is small."
"It's warmer to huddle together."
"Then I'll sleep on the cot, and you'll sleep in this hospital bed?" Qin Yan asked.
Cheng Tianxun hugged her tighter: "Are you going to sleep or not? If you make a fuss and rumors start spreading tomorrow, don't cry."
Qin Yan immediately stopped moving.
Cheng Tianxun had been annoyed by her twice that night, but finally got his revenge. He wasn't very comfortable sleeping on his side, but Qin Yan landed stiffly in his arms, making her even more nervous, and Cheng Tianxun finally felt satisfied.
He was happy, yet also a little timid, and snuggled up next to Qin Yan, falling fast asleep.
