Chapter 22 Cohabitation
After establishing their relationship, Shen Yu'an's life seemed unchanged, yet everything seemed to have changed.
Xize still picked him up in the morning and handed him hot cocoa when he got in the car. But before, Shen Yu'an would say "Thank you, sir" when he took it. Now, when he says "thank you," he adds "Daddy."
Her ears would turn red every time she finished speaking, but Xize would always smile slightly when he heard it.
After school in the afternoon, Xize was still waiting for him at the school gate. Shen Yu'an used to draw as soon as he got on the bus, but now he doesn't draw anymore and always wants to talk to Xize.
Sometimes he would say that the teacher praised him that day, sometimes he would say that the food in the cafeteria was not good, and sometimes he would not say anything, but just lean over, his shoulder against Xize's arm, and sit quietly.
Xize let him lean on him, driving with one hand while reaching out with the other to squeeze his fingers.
The days were so sweet that Shen Yu'an felt it was unreal.
More than a week passed like this. That night, Xize took him back to his apartment, and the two of them stood downstairs for a while.
Under the streetlights, Shen Yu'an huddled inside his hoodie. Xize pulled the brim of his hoodie up for him and asked if he was cold.
Shen Yu'an shook her head and said she wasn't cold, then smiled with her lips pursed.
Xize looked at him and smiled, then remained silent for two seconds before speaking.
"Xiao An, come move in with me."
Shen Yu'an's smile froze, and she blinked.
"Move to your place?"
"Hmm." Xize's voice was calm, as if he were talking about something very ordinary. "I'm worried about you living alone outside. I can't pick you up and drop you off every day either. Sometimes I have meetings at night, and I don't feel at ease leaving you to go home by yourself. I'll feel more at ease if you move in with me."
Shen Yu'an opened his mouth, and it took him a few moments to process what he had just said.
She moved to the Nishizawa family's house and lived with Nishizawa.
I see this person every morning when I wake up, and I also see this person before I go to sleep at night.
No need to cook for yourself, no need to do your own laundry, no need to shiver alone under the covers when the heating is off.
Things he never dared to even think about before were now casually brought up by Xize.
"Is it really possible?" Shen Yu'an asked softly.
"Of course." Xize looked at him, his grey-blue eyes gentle under the streetlights. "That house is already quite big; it will bring a lot of life to the place. Plus, it's closer to your school, so you can sleep in a little longer in the mornings."
Shen Yu'an lowered his head and thought for a while, then raised his head and nodded twice.
"Okay, I'll move it."
Xize's lips curled up, not as faint as usual, but the kind of smile he couldn't hide. He reached out and ruffled Shen Yu'an's hair, saying they would move this weekend.
On Saturday morning, Shen Yu'an packed his things.
He had been in London for two years, and all his belongings consisted of two suitcases and a box of art supplies.
He folded the clothes and put them inside, carried the art supplies box separately, and placed the neatly folded cashmere blanket on top of the box.
He brought along the cushions on the sofa, the cups on the coffee table, and the tea canister that Xize had left behind in the kitchen.
It was all collected in less than an hour.
Xize came to pick him up personally. The driver helped him load his suitcase into the car, and Shen Yu'an sat in the back seat, watching the apartment building get further and further away through the car window, feeling a little reluctant to leave.
That was the best place he had stayed since coming to London—warm, safe, and sunny.
But that's not home.
The real home is in the direction the car is heading.
The car drove through the streets of London and into an area that Shen Yu'an had never been to before.
The streets here are quieter, the trees along the street are older, and the buildings are all in the Georgian style, which has been around for hundreds of years—neat brick walls, white window frames, and black iron gates.
The car stopped in front of a large black iron gate.
The iron gate slowly opened, the car drove in, passed through a gravel path, went around a small garden, and stopped in front of the main house.
Shen Yu'an got out of the car and looked up at the house in front of him.
It was a three-story Georgian-style building with gray and white stone walls, rows of neat windows, and two Roman columns supporting a triangular lintel at the entrance.
The house looks old, but it's very well maintained; every brick is spotless and the windows are sparkling clean.
It's huge. Bigger than Shen Yu'an had imagined.
Xize walked over to him, saw him tilting his head back and opening his mouth, and smiled.
"Let's go in and take a look."
Shen Yu'an followed him through the gate.
The foyer was very high, with an intricately patterned ceiling and a crystal chandelier hanging down. The floor was paved with dark marble that gleamed.
A large oil painting hangs on the wall, depicting the landscape of the Scottish Highlands. Shen Yu'an recognizes that it is the same artist as the one that Xize collected at the previous art exhibition.
A long corridor extends from the foyer, with dark wooden doors on both sides, all of which are closed.
"The first floor has a living room, study, dining room, and kitchen," Xize said, walking ahead and opening one of the doors to show him. "The second floor has bedrooms and guest rooms. The third floor has an art studio; I had someone prepare the one with the best lighting for you."
The art studio. Shen Yu'an's eyes lit up when he heard those two words.
Xize led him up to the second floor. The stairs were made of dark wood, very stable to walk on, and the handrails were polished smooth.
The second-floor corridor is covered with thick carpet, so there is no sound when you step on it.
Xize pushed open a door at the end of the corridor.
"This room is yours."
Shen Yu'an walked in and froze.
The room was large, with a south-facing window that covered almost an entire wall, letting in sunlight that made the whole room bright and airy.
You can see that small garden from the window.
The furniture in the room was all in warm colors, and a large bed was placed against the wall with light blue bedding that was neatly folded.
The wardrobe was large, and the desk was placed by the window, on which sat a new set of paintbrushes and paints.
Shen Yu'an walked over and touched the paintbrushes, his fingers trembling.
"Are these all for me?"
"Hmm." Xize leaned against the doorframe, looking at him. "I didn't know what brand you liked, so I had my assistant buy you a set with good reputations. Try it out, and if you don't like it, you can change it."
Shen Yu'an turned around and looked at Xize. Sunlight streamed in through the window, falling on Xize and making his deep golden hair shine.
Shen Yu'an felt like he was dreaming. From the moment he was picked up on the car in the rainy night until now, every day felt like a dream.
"Thank you." He walked over, reached out and grabbed Caesar's sleeve, his voice a little muffled, "Daddy."
Xize looked down at him and reached out to ruffle his hair.
As they were talking, footsteps came from the corridor. Shen Yu'an turned around and saw a middle-aged man with gray hair walking over. He was wearing a smart suit vest and carrying a tray with a pot of tea and two cups on it.
"Sir," the man stood in the doorway, bowing slightly, his tone respectful and gentle, "the tea is ready. This must be Mr. Shen? Welcome."
Shen Yu'an was a little flustered. He straightened up and nodded: "Hello."
Xize said to Shen Yu'an, "This is the butler, James. He's been here for over twenty years. Just tell him whatever you need."
Mr. James smiled and nodded at Shen Yu'an, placed the tea on the desk, and then left. Shen Yu'an noticed that he walked silently, appearing and disappearing like a gust of wind.
He was just about to ask Xize who else was here when he heard a commotion downstairs.
After a while, a middle-aged woman wearing an apron came up with a plate of snacks. She was also smiling and called Shen Yu'an "Little Master," saying that he could just tell her what he wanted to eat for dinner.
Then a young man came up and asked if Shen Yu'an needed help unpacking his luggage. A gardener knocked on the door and asked if Shen Yu'an liked the white flowers in the garden, and if so, he could change them.
Shen Yu'an stood there, somewhat at a loss.
He has always taken care of himself since he was a child. Back in China, his parents would take care of his food and clothing, but after coming to the UK, he had to do everything himself.
I do everything myself: cooking, washing clothes, tidying up the room, buying groceries, and paying utility bills.
Suddenly a group of people surrounded him, asking him what kind of tea he wanted to drink, what kind of food he wanted to eat, whether he wanted the flowers to be changed to a different color, and whether he wanted help packing his luggage.
He was a little uncomfortable.
"Daddy..." he whispered to Xize, his fingers still clutching Xize's clothes tightly. "So many people."
Xize looked down at him, saw his slightly furrowed brows and somewhat bewildered eyes, and smiled. He took Shen Yu'an's hand from the hem of his clothes and held it in his own.
"Don't be nervous. They're just here to take care of you. You don't need to worry about what they do; just do your own thing."
Shen Yu'an nodded, but still felt somewhat uncomfortable.
At dinner time, Shen Yu'an sat at a long dining table that could seat more than a dozen people. The table was set with exquisite tableware and three candlesticks that shone with a warm light.
The butler and another servant stood by, ready to refill his water, hand him napkins, and change his plates at any time.
Shen Yu'an ate very cautiously, his hands trembling as he held the knife and fork.
He used to sit on the sofa watching TV while eating, but now he sits in front of such a long table, with people standing next to him watching him eat, and he doesn't even dare to make a sound while chewing.
Xize sat at the other end of the long table, watching his stiff posture and unnatural hands, without saying anything.
But Shen Yu'an noticed that Xize was eating much slower, as if he was waiting for him.
When dessert was served, Shen Yu'an couldn't hold back any longer. She looked up at the butler and servants standing next to her, then at Xize.
"Daddy," his voice was soft, a little embarrassed, "could they... not stand? I can't eat much."
Caesar put down his fork and nodded to the butler. Mr. James immediately understood, and led his men out, closing the restaurant door behind them.
As soon as the door closed, Shen Yu'an relaxed completely, his shoulders slumped, and he leaned on the table.
"So tired," he muttered, pressing his face against the table.
Xize stood up and walked over to him. He sat down in the chair next to Shen Yu'an and reached out to brush aside Shen Yu'an's bangs.
"It's normal to feel uncomfortable on the first day. You'll get used to it in a few days."
Shen Yu'an turned her head to look at him, her eyes a little red.
"I'm just not used to being waited on. I used to do everything myself."
Caesar's fingers moved from his bangs to his cheek and gently brushed his face.
"The past is the past. Now I'm here. From now on, you won't have to do anything yourself. It's only right that someone takes care of you."
Looking at Xize's serious expression and hearing him say, "You won't have to do anything yourself from now on," Shen Yu'an felt a mix of sadness and warmth in his heart. He turned his face towards Xize, resting his forehead against Xize's arm, and whispered something.
"Daddy, you're so good to me."
Xize looked down at the back of his head and the red tips of his ears, and the corners of his mouth curved into a smile.
"Not good enough." He then kissed Shen Yu'an on the lips.
Shen Yu'an buried her face even deeper, her ears turning bright red.
That night, Shen Yu'an slept in the large south-facing room.
The bed was soft and comfortable, and the blankets had a faint cedar scent, just like the smell on Xize.
He rolled over and looked at the ceiling.
The house was huge, so huge that he could get lost walking down the hallways. The butler was very polite, the servants were very attentive, and the dinner was exquisite. Everything was perfect, so perfect that it felt a little unreal.
But the cedar scent and the voice that said "not good enough" were real.
Shen Yu'an pulled the blanket up to her chin and closed her eyes.
He'll get used to it.
With Xize around, he'll get used to everything.
