Chapter 5 Are you kidding me?
Wen Song waited until the next day for Zhou Shijing's promise to "contact me later".
Zhou Shijing has arrived in Bincheng and sent her some pictures of the wedding. "They said they're going to have a wedding night prank, so there's a high chance I won't be able to make it back today. I've booked the earliest flight for tomorrow."
Wen Song was sitting on the sofa eating fruit when he saw the message. He immediately lost his appetite, and unease and disappointment gradually filled his heart.
She desperately wanted to call him, tell him about her unease, and urge him to come home immediately.
With her fingertips hovering over the dial button, Wen Song finally gave up and replied with a message: "Then don't stay up too late, get some rest, and be careful."
She didn't want to spoil his mood, and she didn't want him to think she was desperate to get married.
"Don't worry, I'll be there on time tomorrow and won't miss anything important."
Seeing his resolute promise, Wen Song could no longer smile. As if reminding him, or as if comforting herself, she carefully typed three words: "See you tomorrow."
sleepless nights.
The next morning, Wen Song got up early to get ready. When Lu Yun came up to call her, she was startled. "Songsong, what did you do last night? Why are your dark circles so bad?"
Wen Song was too embarrassed to admit that she was nervous, so she made up an excuse, "Aunt Yun, I wrote a paper last night, so I probably went to bed a little late."
Lu Yun hurriedly applied an emergency face mask to her, while nagging, "You child, have you forgotten what day it is today? You need to take registration photos to get your marriage certificate. These huge dark circles under your eyes will make you look terrible in the photos."
Fortunately, Wen Song is young and her skin recovers quickly. After applying a face mask and a light layer of makeup, her complexion finally looked much better.
Looking at her, Lu Yun felt both the joy of marrying a wife and the sadness of a daughter about to get married. She carefully straightened Wen Song's dress before patting her shoulder. "Go on, Aunt Yun has prepared the change of address fee and is just waiting for you to come back and serve me tea."
Wen Song remained calm and composed throughout, until she got into the car, at which point the smile on her lips faded slightly. She casually snapped a picture of the scenery outside the car window and sent it to Zhou Shijing with the caption, "I'm off."
Last night around midnight, Zhou Shijing sent her a flight information sheet. Judging by the time, he was about to land.
I arrived at the Civil Affairs Bureau at exactly nine o'clock.
Wen Song arrived relatively early, but there were several young couples ahead of her, holding number plates with eyes full of excitement and anticipation.
Unlike their festive and sweet atmosphere, Wen Song sat alone and quietly on the waiting chair, appearing overly lonely and desolate.
Ten minutes ago, she received a message from Zhou Shijing saying that he had landed and was on his way back to the city.
But when she dialed the number, it said the call could not be connected.
Wen Song didn't know if Zhou Shijing's phone was off or had no signal. She waited patiently for a while longer, but the agreed time had passed and there was still no sign of Zhou Shijing at the door. The unease that had been building up in her heart for a long time was magnified to the maximum.
Like a guillotine hanging over her head, the last words the girl said to her that night were the rope that held that guillotine.
As that phrase resurfaced in her mind—
"Just wait and see. No matter what date you set for getting your marriage certificate, Zhou Shijing will not show up."
"Ring ring..."
The phone rang, the rope snapped, and Lu Yun's panicked, choked voice pounded into her heart like a sudden storm: "Songsong, come to the hospital quickly! Shi Jing was in a car accident!"
The guillotine, hanging high above, crashed down, shattering all her remaining hopes.
When Wen Song arrived at the hospital, Zhou Shijing had just been wheeled out of the emergency room, his head wrapped in bandages, lying on the hospital bed with a pale face.
It is said that the car was hit by a pickup truck carrying goods on its way back to the city. Fortunately, the driver reacted quickly and turned the steering wheel in time; otherwise, the consequences would have been unpredictable.
The doctor was explaining the patient's condition to Zhou Yongqian outside the ward, and Wen Song vaguely heard some professional terms such as "head impact" and "concussion".
She didn't listen carefully, but after learning that Zhou Shijing was not in any danger, her highly tense mood suddenly relaxed, and her legs felt extremely weak.
Lu Yun was still wiping away tears beside him. "That master must be a charlatan, right? What kind of auspicious date did he predict? Shi Jing barely escaped with his life, and now he can't even get his marriage certificate."
Wen Song comforted Lu Yun, her voice trembling slightly, "Aunt Yun, we can get the certificate anytime. The most important thing is that Shi Jing is alright."
Lu Yun nodded, seeing that Wen Song's face was pale, she must have been frightened just now. "Songsong, don't worry too much. The doctor said his injuries are not that serious and he will wake up soon."
After resting for a while, Wen Song wrung out a wet towel and carefully wiped the blood off Zhou Shijing's face. Worried that he might be hungry when he woke up, she went downstairs and bought some food to bring up.
Just as they reached the ward door, they heard Lu Yun scolding Zhou Shijing, "Tell me, how dangerous was it today? It's such an important thing to get our marriage certificate. I told you to come back early, but you wouldn't listen. You rushed to make time just to play around."
Wen Song knew that Zhou Shijing had woken up, and her pace quickened.
When I entered the ward, I saw him leaning listlessly against the headboard. "What marriage certificate? Mom, what are you talking about?"
"What did you mean by getting a marriage certificate?"
Lu Yun felt both heartache and anger. "Do you know how long Songsong waited for you at the Civil Affairs Bureau? She was terrified when she heard you were in a car accident. Let me tell you..."
"Hey, Mom, wait a minute!"
Zhou Shijing gestured for a pause, his brow furrowed, his expression somewhat suspicious. "Who is Songsong? Why is she waiting for me at the Civil Affairs Bureau?"
After he finished speaking, he saw Wen Song standing at the door of the ward, and his brows furrowed even deeper. "Who is she, and why is she in my ward?"
"Zhou Shijing, did you damage your brain in that car accident? Who do you think she is? Who do you think Songsong is? You…"
Lu Yun stopped mid-sentence, realizing something was wrong, her expression suddenly hardening. "Oh no, he really hit his head! Songsong, you stay in the ward and watch over him, I'll go get the doctor!"
After Lu Yun rushed out of the ward in a panic, Wen Song and Zhou Shijing were left looking at each other in bewilderment.
Wen Song was still reeling from Zhou Shijing's series of questions. She stared blankly at him, her voice slightly bewildered, "Zhou Shijing, are you kidding me? This isn't funny at all."
"Who's joking with you? Are we that close?"
Zhou Shijing spoke without any politeness, and his gaze towards her was full of scrutiny and distance, as if she were truly a complete stranger to him.
Wen Song's heart sank.
The doctor arrived quickly and took Zhou Shijing out of the ward for further examination. The results showed that he had a hematoma in his brain, which may have been compressing his nerves, causing his memory loss.
When Lu Zhiheng rushed over, the ward was in chaos. Zhou Shijing growled irritably, "Stop asking me questions! My head hurts so much, it's killing me!"
"I say I don't remember, and that's final. Even if you kill me now, I still won't remember her!"
Lu Yun started wiping away tears again: "Didn't you say it wasn't serious? How come she's lost her memory?"
Zhou Yongqian comforted her, "Don't keep crying. The doctor said it's just temporary amnesia, not that you'll never remember."
Amidst the chaotic noise, a gentle voice rang out at the right moment, "Aunt Yun, Uncle Zhou, don't worry, let Shi Jing rest for a while."
Lu Zhiheng turned around and noticed Wen Song, who had been squeezed into a corner. The girl was slender and stood there quietly, looking thin and helpless.
The doctor gave Zhou Shijing a sedative, and he quickly fell into a deep sleep.
Wen Song sat on a chair in the corridor, her fingertips unconsciously rubbing together.
She would occasionally glance up at the man at the end of the corridor. He was standing by the window with his back to the corridor, making a phone call. His deep voice drifted out intermittently, mixed with fluent English. Wen Song couldn't hear it clearly, but she sensed that his tone was steady and serious.
About ten minutes later, the man finally ended the call and turned back. Lu Yun hurriedly went to meet him, "How did it go? What did the expert say?"
