I chose the safe house, and the Human Alliance regretted it.
Chapter 31 The Second Truth of the Apocalypse
For the next three days, Qian Mengxun continued to diligently play the role of a maid, serving Wang Wei wholeheartedly.
Around noon on the third day, the wind blades disappeared as expected.
Qian Mengxun looked out the window and saw that it had suddenly become quiet, feeling both delighted and surprised.
The good news is that the potentially lethal wind blades are gone.
Surprisingly, Wang Wei predicted all of this correctly!
Wang Wei remained calm. The only thing that made him happy was that his safe house had been upgraded again, with a coverage area of 500 meters and a duration of seven days.
In Jiangnan City, countless people who had been staying at home looked at the quiet sky and their faces lit up with joy.
has it ended?
The wind blades have vanished!
But this joy did not last long before another strange change occurred.
It snowed.
At first, it was just a few snowflakes, falling softly.
But in less than two minutes, heavy snow began to fall, and the temperature plummeted to below minus forty degrees Celsius.
Jiangnan City, a southern city that had never experienced severe cold, was transformed into a frozen, snow-covered city in an instant.
When the underground water pipes froze and burst, people's joy turned into wailing.
-
Wang Wei went to the window, looked at the snow-covered world outside, and remained calm.
After the wind blades comes extreme cold.
This is the second phase of the catastrophe.
Qian Mengxun huddled inside the room, shivering slightly.
She looked at Wang Wei standing by the window, her eyes filled with complex emotions.
Aren't you cold?
Wang Wei did not answer.
Qian Mengxun bit her lip and didn't say anything more.
At that moment, a few scattered sounds came from the stairwell outside.
Wang Wei glanced sideways, a faint smile playing at the corners of his lips.
"They're here."
-
In the stairwell, a group of people huddled together, shivering.
The leader was a man in his fifties who lived downstairs from Wang Wei. His surname was Zhou, and everyone called him Uncle Zhou.
He was originally the owner of a local company, had some savings, and was considered a prominent figure in the building.
But now, he was walking unsteadily, and there was no trace of his former swagger.
"Uncle Zhou, are we really going to find that kid surnamed Wang?" a young man behind us asked, trembling.
Uncle Zhou glared at him. "We're neighbors in the same building, we see each other all the time. With so many supplies, do you think he'd just stand by and watch us starve and freeze to death?"
"But……"
"But what 'but'?!" Uncle Zhou interrupted him, "We're not robbing him, we're borrowing him! We'll definitely pay him back after the disaster is over!"
Even he himself didn't believe it when he said that.
Because they brought kitchen knives, fruit knives, and iron bars from home with them this time.
But who cares about that now?
A group of people, supporting each other, arrived at Wang Wei's door.
Uncle Zhou took a deep breath and raised his hand to knock on the door.
Boom, boom, boom.
"Wang Wei, open the door."
Inside the room, Qian Mengxun suddenly looked up at Wang Wei.
Wang Wei's expression remained unchanged; he merely raised his chin slightly, gesturing for her to open the door.
Qian Mengxun hesitated for a moment, then walked to the door and opened it a crack.
Outside the door, a group of people shivering from the cold huddled together, their eyes shining with hope when they saw Qian Mengxun.
Qian Mengxun glanced back and, seeing that Wang Wei didn't respond, nodded.
"Then, can we come inside to talk?" Uncle Zhou rubbed his hands together. "It's so cold outside..."
Qian Mengxun hesitated for a moment, but still opened the door.
A group of people rushed in, but were stunned when they saw the scene inside.
In a corner of the living room, a lot of food was piled up haphazardly.
Wang Wei stood by the window, watching them calmly.
Uncle Zhou swallowed hard, forcing a smile. "Wang Wei, well... we know it's not good to come here like this, but we really have no other choice. Our family is freezing, and we're completely out of food. Could you lend us some supplies? We'll definitely pay you back, double the amount, once the disaster is over!"
Others echoed his sentiments.
"Yes, yes, we're all neighbors, we should help each other out."
"We don't need much, just enough to last a few days."
"......"
Wang Wei listened quietly, his face expressionless.
After they finished speaking, he said calmly, "Borrow?"
"Yes, yes, yes, I'll lend it to you!" Uncle Zhou nodded quickly, "I'll definitely return it!"
"What will you use to repay me?" Wang Wei asked calmly. "Do you even know when this catastrophe will end?"
Uncle Zhou's smile froze.
"Wang Wei, what are you saying..." He chuckled dryly, "We're neighbors, there's no need to be so formal, is there?"
"Neighbors?" Wang Wei's lips curled into a slight smile. "I don't think I've moved here very long. Are we familiar with each other?"
The group looked at each other, speechless.
Uncle Zhou's expression changed, but he suppressed his anger: "Wang Wei, now is not the time to argue about this. We're all down on our luck, let's help each other out so we can meet again in the future."
"In the future?" Wang Wei shook his head slightly. "I don't need to see you in the future."
The atmosphere turned completely cold after those words were spoken.
A middle-aged woman couldn't help but speak up: "Wang Wei, what do you mean by that? We're asking you nicely to borrow something, why are you putting on airs?"
"Exactly!" another man chimed in. "Look at all this stuff in your room, enough to eat for a month! What's wrong with sharing some with us? It won't bankrupt you!"
"Besides, why should you live so comfortably while we have to starve and freeze outside?"
"Are you going to just stand by and watch someone die?"
"......."
The group's voices grew louder and their tone became increasingly aggressive.
Uncle Zhou pretended to stop them, saying, "Alright, alright, stop arguing and talk this out."
Then he turned to Wang Wei, his smile fading considerably. "Wang Wei, I'm asking you one last time: are you going to lend these supplies or not?"
Wang Wei looked at them and suddenly smiled.
That smile was faint, yet it sent chills down everyone's spine.
"You never intended to lend it in the first place," he said slowly.
"You just want me to hand it over voluntarily, so you can feel better. If I don't, you'll snatch it from me. Then you'll tell yourselves—he was the one who was unjust first, so you can't blame us for being unjust."
Uncle Zhou's face turned ashen.
"Wang Wei, don't be ungrateful!"
"Why bother talking to him like that!" A man pulled out a kitchen knife hidden behind his back. "Just rob him! Do you think he can beat us all by himself?"
Everyone's eyes turned red.
Yeah, why should we?
Why should he be able to live comfortably while they have to wait to die?
On what grounds?
"Charge in! Grab it!"
"Wait a minute," Wang Wei suddenly said.
The group was taken aback, thinking that Wang Wei's attitude had changed and that he was going to give them supplies.
But Wang Wei went into the kitchen, opened the cupboard, and selected a kitchen knife.
He took the knife, walked back to the living room, and handed it to Qian Mengxun amidst everyone's astonished gazes.
"Take it."
Qian Mengxun was stunned.
"Go and kill them."
Qian Mengxun trembled and stared at him in disbelief.
"I...I..." Her lips trembled, "I wouldn't kill anyone..."
Wang Wei looked at her, his eyes as calm as a stagnant pool.
"You will."
"No, no..." Qian Mengxun took a step back. "They are people, living, breathing people! How can I..."
"people?"
Wang Wei interrupted her, "Look at them, are they even human?"
Qian Mengxun followed his gaze.
The group of people had a green glint in their eyes, like a pack of starving wolves.
The man with the knife had trembling hands, but his eyes were fixed on the food and water in the corner.
"If they take the food, will they still share it with you?"
Qian Mengxun's lips moved, but she couldn't speak.
Wang Wei reached out and pushed the kitchen knife forward.
"So what you're doing now isn't killing people, it's protecting the supplies."
Qian Mengxun stared at the knife before her, "I...I..."
"Whether they come to steal food, kill, or protect themselves," Wang Wei said calmly, "it's not a matter of good or evil, it's all instinct."
Regardless of good or evil, it's all instinct.
This is the second stark truth in the post-apocalyptic world.
