The Nightmare Experience of a Useless Person
Chapter 54 Foxes and Gods
The minor injury inflicted by the Nightmare Beast was utterly insignificant to the Dream God. Moreover, he had deliberately run into the wolf's broken claw, resulting in only a scratch and some bleeding. Compared to that, it was much harder to feign misery and shed tears.
Do you ever feel lonely?
The injury on his back had healed a little, and the Dream God reappeared on the large rock, calmly gazing at the silent river.
The thin mist and the drifting boats are the breeding ground for illusory dreams.
"I used to not understand what loneliness was, but ever since..." He paused, looking ashamed to speak.
"Since what?" Bai Chan was straightforward, always impulsively lifting the beaded curtain in front of him, wanting to see him clearly.
I peeked into a mortal's dream.
"What did you dream about?"
The Dream God smiled gently, then leaned forward and covered the little fox's eyes with his sleeve. The thin, plain robe acted like a curtain, and Bai Chan, understanding the implication, lifted the curtain, revealing a completely transformed scene.
"Where is this?"
The vast sky suddenly opened up, and a crescent moon, like a small boat, carried a few stars westward. The distant horizon was painted blood red, with colorful clouds filling the sky and the afterglow of the sunset creating a beautiful scene. Among the thin clouds, flying fish darted about in groups, stirring up the clouds and playing with the moon.
Are they fish? The little fox rubbed its eyes in disbelief. They really were fish! The several leaping knife fish thrashed about, their bodies flapping like silver shuttles weaving the drifting red clouds into rows.
Before us stretched a vast grassland. On the green grass, herds of cattle led the houses, like snails on their shells. The cattle walked and stopped, and the houses swayed along with them. The small houses were lit with dim yellow lights, and from a distance they looked like strange giants pacing across this desolate land.
Beneath her feet lay soft mud. The little fox gently lifted her foot and landed again, a cluster of dwarf gardenias rippling like waves beneath her feet. She crouched down to pick them, and the pure white petals transformed into a wisp of white mist, dissipating between her fingers.
"This isn't real; it's an illusion I created using the Nightmare Beast's spiritual power."
The Dream God gently raised his hand, and light snowflakes fell from the sky, fluttering and dancing, landing on the little fox's nose, warm and cozy.
"Is this what the human world is like?" Unlike Bai Chan's excitement, a hint of doubt flickered in his eyes, like a child waiting for an adult's affirmation, his head lowered.
His disappointment was noticed, and Bai Chan took his hand, then raised it high, pointing to the crescent moon. "The moon only appears at night. If it's daytime, you'll have to become a sun."
"I've never been to the human world, and I don't know what the sun is. Can you draw a sun for me?"
"Draw? How do you draw?"
The Dream God raised his hand, and the bone knife appeared in his hand. He gently covered his hand, and the bone knife transformed into a paintbrush.
Use this.
Bai Chan took the paintbrush, her face full of disbelief. She tried to find confidence in the eyes of the Dream God, and finally, after receiving a smile, she slowly raised her hand and drew a semicircle under the red clouds, which was the setting sun.
"Is this the sun?" He gazed at the horizon, letting the afterglow paint his eyes a gentle orange-red. A red sun set into his eyes, rising and falling with his heartbeat.
"Fish live in water, so you have to draw a river or a sea." Bai Chan raised her hand, and the lines under her brush curved and twisted, creating a silver ribbon-like river that flowed through the boundless grassland. Unlike the river in Linmengyuan, the river under her brush flowed slowly, with small fish occasionally splashing in the gentle ripples.
"Houses lie on the ground, and the free cattle roam freely."
The little fox raised her head, letting the warm snowflakes fall between her brows. "Snowflakes belong to the cold winter, like the wind in the abyss of dreams, chilling to the bone."
"Then I'll make them disappear."
Bai Chan squeezed his hand again. "No need. This kind of snowstorm is quite interesting."
She walked forward, each step a blossoming flower. A gentle breeze lifted her hair, carrying a faint, delicate floral fragrance that was subtle, soft, and captivating, drawing one closer and closer.
She started running, towards the tree in the distance—the only tree on the vast grassland. The Dream God followed her, running forward with her, wild, joyful, his blood boiling, his heart surging.
The orange-red afterglow tinged the tree with a crimson hue, a hazy, indistinct red glow, much like the wedding candles in a newlywed couple's room.
"You don't have a name, so I'll give you one!"
All the scenery vanished in that instant. At this moment, the Dream God's vision was filled only with a lively and agile little fox. She tilted her head, her fingertips lightly tapping her chin, and her fluffy ears swayed in the wind.
"The world you yearn for is vast, boundless, and unrestrained, but you were born on the banks of a deep pool. Perhaps... you shall be named Mangya (meaning 'vast horizon')! May you be carefree and unconventional!"
"Vast horizon, vast horizon." He kept repeating it, as if trying to engrave these two words into his heart. Yes, yes, what he wanted was to be carefree and unrestrained!
Mangya bent down, his handsome face almost touching Bai Chan's, so close that Bai Chan could feel his disordered breathing and see the spark in his eyes. The girl blushed, whether from the glow of the setting sun or from her innocent shyness.
"I love you, will you spend your life with me?"
The sudden confession threw the little fox into a panic. The crescent moon in the daytime, the fish flying in the pond, the gentle breeze over the vast fertile fields, the sunset glowing red on the edge of the sea of clouds... At this moment, only a blank space remained.
Bai Chan opened her lips, but her throat was dry, and she was too nervous to make a sound. She was at a loss and tried to tiptoe forward, but she was in the wrong place.
Her nose touched Mangya's, their flushed cheeks pressed tightly together. She wanted to speak, but her raised lips landed a kiss on Mangya's cheek.
A soft laugh reached her ears, and the person in front of her pulled her into their arms. Between their strong arms, their two bodies were so close, sharing the same surging passion.
Mangya finally understood the fragrance emanating from Bai Chan. Where did the light and elegant scent come from? It was actually incredibly strong, enveloping his nostrils in a single, irresistible aroma that lured him ever closer.
……
"My God! I told you we couldn't let them be alone together, and I only had time for a few minutes before they were getting married!"
Jiang Zhiyang was puzzled, furious, and hysterical. At this moment, he was like an old father watching his good child about to jump into a fire pit, yet he was helpless.
"She's so young, she can't even see through all those tricks and schemes of Mangya. Marriage? Marriage? Marriage! Isn't this an obvious trap! Qingjun, why don't you give me the knife? I'll just slash a few times, what's the sin of killing a god!"
As soon as Jiang Zhiyang raised his hand, Yu Qingjun obediently placed the dagger in his palm.
"Really...really giving it to me?"
"Mmm." Yu Qingjun covered her mouth and laughed. "Weren't you going to kill gods?"
"You really don't value my life at all!" Jiang Zhiyang jumped three feet high, seemingly scolding, but actually sounding coquettish.
"Alright, let's just wait and see. Like the dreams of all Nightmare Beasts, who can truly change anything? What's meant to happen has already happened."
What shouldn't have happened has already happened.
We've already hurt those who shouldn't have been hurt.
What should have been let go, it was never let go of.
