The Nightmare Experience of a Useless Person
Chapter 11: Shrinking
As consciousness returned, I saw an endless field of flowers before me.
The sunflowers covering the fields, bathed in bright sunlight, created a hazy, golden glow, bright and warm.
Jiang Zhiyang slowly stood up, admiring the horizon where the azure sky met the golden sea of flowers. The panic and helplessness he felt earlier had subsided. Jiang Zhiyang thought that perhaps it was because he had experienced too many strange things recently, that he was somewhat at a loss when faced with these sudden scenes.
"Find me in your dreams."
Always keeping Yu Qingjun's instructions in mind, Jiang Zhiyang dared not delay and walked briskly along the flower-lined path.
Along the muddy path, many flower growers sat casually, eating meals they had brought from home: steamed buns, noodles, pickled vegetables, and tofu. Although the food was simple, they all ate with great relish.
"Is it that delicious?"
Jiang Zhiyang couldn't help but swallow, his gaze fixed on the fragrant, soft steamed bun, unable to look away. He felt ashamed of his pathetic state, but his stomach was simply growling with hunger.
With a loud thud, my stomach was hit hard.
The basket hit the ground, and several steamed buns rolled out. Jiang Zhiyang's gaze followed the large buns, and he felt he didn't even have the strength to stand up.
The little girl quickly got up, picked up the steamed buns one by one, carefully put them back in the basket, and then stretched out a small hand to Jiang Zhiyang.
What a tiny and adorable hand.
Jiang Zhiyang couldn't help but smile. How could such a small child possibly pull him? But he didn't want to spoil the little girl's fun, so he held up one finger.
No! Something's really wrong! Why are my hands so small?!
The little girl grabbed his finger and easily pulled him up. He looked down and saw his small feet and short legs; he looked about the same height as the little girl.
"I'm sorry, here's a steamed bun as an apology," the little girl said sweetly.
Staring at her face, Jiang Zhiyang stood there dumbfounded. Wasn't this a miniature version of Yu Qingjun?! A beauty mark adorned beneath her round, glass-bead-like eyes, a small nose, and pink lips—so adorable! Instantly, it felt as if countless little people were dancing in his heart. So cute!
Seeing his dazed look, Xiao Qingjun had no choice but to stuff the steamed bun into his palm. "I'm going to deliver food to Father. Take it yourself."
Jiang Zhiyang squeezed the big steamed bun; it was indeed fragrant and soft!
No, that wretched steamed bun almost delayed our important business! Jiang Zhiyang turned around and saw that Xiao Qingjun had already run quite a distance, her little arms and legs moving so fast.
However, her own small arms and legs, though similar in appearance, were not as good as Xiao Qingjun's. No matter how she tried, she could not keep up with Xiao Qingjun's pace and could only chase after the dust she kicked up, always one step behind.
"Daddy, time to eat!" She finally stopped beside a tall man's legs, raised the food basket high, and gave him a sweet smile. The corners of her eyes had a curve that Jiang Zhiyang knew all too well.
"Why are you here! Didn't I tell you to stay home?"
"Mom was busy in the kitchen, so I sneaked out, hehe! I brought it to Dad so he won't have to make another trip."
"My dear girl, let's go home right now!" With that, the tall man opened his arms and picked up Xiao Qingjun, holding her tightly in his arms as if afraid of being discovered.
Good heavens! We finally made it this far, do we have to keep running now?!
Yu Qingjun was hard to win over, and her father was even harder. Jiang Zhiyang stuffed the large steamed bun into his pocket and strained his little arms and legs with all his might. He couldn't afford to lose him now that he'd finally found him!
After crossing the bridge south from the flower field, you'll find a small village. The third house on the left at the village entrance, with a fence surrounded by hydrangeas, belongs to Xiao Qingjun.
Jiang Zhiyang leaned against the courtyard fence, panting heavily. He felt as if a pool of blood was about to gush out of his throat. This run was as intense as a school physical test.
Little Qingjun was gently set down from her father's arms. The adult suddenly turned his head and his eyes met Jiang Zhiyang's. Instantly, a chill ran down her spine like a hairy spider, and every hair on her body stood on end. Had he already been discovered?
"Little girl, you should go home too." With that, the father and daughter went inside.
Little girl? Did she not only get smaller, but also undergo gender reassignment surgery?
My mind is a mess. Everything else is easy to accept, but how can I accept becoming a girl?
The babbling brook reflected Jiang Zhiyang's small face. A miniature version of Jiang Zhiyang. This was the first time he had seen what he looked like as a child. After all, that photo taken at the orphanage had been thrown into the fire and burned to ashes before its owner could even examine it properly.
He touched his smooth, delicate skin, thinking that he must have been quite likable as a child, with delicate features and a soft, gentle demeanor.
Wait, I forgot something important again! Could I really have turned into a girl?!
Jiang Zhiyang turned around, secretly tugged at his waistband, and hurriedly peered inside.
I breathed a sigh of relief. Thank goodness, he's still a little man! It's probably because his hair is too long and he hasn't combed it properly, plus he looks like a girl, that's why he's mistaken for a little girl.
Jiang Zhiyang took out a large steamed bun from his pocket with peace of mind and began to chew it. The bun was already cold, but it still tasted quite good.
Thinking back, the first time he met Yu Qingjun, she gave him a steamed bun. Even the first time he met Lele, she fed him half a steamed bun. Thinking of this, even a simple steamed bun tasted sweet.
After eating his fill, Jiang Zhiyang sneaked to the corner of Xiao Qingjun's house and waited for who knows how long before her parents came out.
But even though there were people at home, they locked the front door?
Jiang Zhiyang struggled to climb over the fence, which was waist-high and would have been a simple step in the past, but now it was a challenge. Fortunately, the soil under the hydrangeas was soft, so Jiang Zhiyang didn't fall too hard.
"Father? Mother?" A sweet voice came from the window, probably having heard the noise.
"It's me!" Jiang Zhiyang hung on the windowsill, attempting a pull-up to get into the house, but the result was obvious: he had overestimated his current physical abilities.
It only showed half its face before collapsing to the ground with a thud.
"It's you!"
"Yes, yes, it's me!"
"You ate my steamed bun, why are you still following me? How stingy of you!"
"Does she really have no memory at all?" Jiang Zhiyang felt incredulous. He then recalled the task Yu Qingjun had given him. Now that he had found her, all he needed to do was kiss her again.
Instantly, his little face flushed red. The premise of remembering everything after a kiss is like a girl finding her lost glass slipper, a princess awakening from a prince's kiss, or a frog prince regaining his human form after receiving a kiss of true love. How fateful it all seems, as if it foreshadows a destined happiness!
"What are you doing here?" Xiao Qingjun's cold voice interrupted Jiang Zhiyang's terrible straight-man fantasy.
"Can you come out?" Jiang Zhiyang tried his best to stand on tiptoe.
"No, Father and Mother said we can't go out these days." Yu Qingjun was such a well-behaved child.
Why?
"Many people are sick, and Daddy says that if you go out, you'll get sick too."
Are you sick?
"Father said that sick people get fevers, and red sores grow from their eyes to their faces, like blood is flowing from their eyes. They call...call...call what Buddha? No, no, they call Guanyin Weeping, um, Guanyin Weeping."
Guanyin weeping? What an eerie name...
