After Tiger shouted those words, Captain Sun shoved him into the back seat of the police car.

The car door slammed shut, reducing the noise outside the window to a muffled hum.

He was still shouting at Zhang Yifan through the glass, his mouth opening and closing, but it was no longer audible.

Captain Sun took the cell phone out of the evidence bag, labeled it, and wrote a line in the remarks column: "The suspect confessed that he was related to the cases of Peng and Meng. It is recommended that he be transferred to the Discipline Inspection Commission."

After finishing writing, he put the pen back in his breast pocket and glanced at Zhang Yifan, who was still standing at the entrance of the billiard hall.

"Excuse me, do you know Peng Kaifei?"

"Same school."

Captain Sun nodded and didn't ask any further questions.

He handed the evidence bag to his colleague next to him, then took out a business card from his pocket and handed it over: "My phone number is on this. Next time something like this happens, wait for the police to arrive, don't rush in yourself. You were quick, but you won't always be so lucky."

Zhang Yifan took the business card and said thank you.

Captain Sun turned to direct the scene, took two steps and then looked back at him, as if he wanted to say something, but in the end he just shook his head and got into the police car.

Zong Wen stood next to Zhang Yifan, watching the police cars drive away one after another, the yellow police tape billowing in the wind and then falling back down.

He nudged Zhang Yifan with his elbow and asked in a low voice, "What Tiger was talking about earlier... those Peng family transfer records and stuff... are they real or fake?"

"Whether it's true or not is none of our business." Zhang Yifan put the business card in his pocket and turned to walk out of the alley.

"How can it be okay! If Peng Kaifei's family is really investigated, how will that kid ever be able to act so arrogantly at school again?"

Zongwen caught up and started counting on his fingers.

"Look, Principal Meng has been arrested, Zhou Degui has been arrested, Brother Hu has been arrested, Zhao Rong has been arrested, and if the Peng family falls too, Yifan, don't you think all of this is related to you?"

"What does this have to do with me? I just came to play a game of billiards."

"Right, right, we took down a kidnapping gang while playing billiards."

Zong Wen rolled his eyes, then couldn't help but laugh.

"Brother Fan, could you please let me know in advance next time? I could bring a power bank and record the whole thing. If I filmed the way your club flew out and posted it online, it would get at least 100,000 views."

Lin Wanqing was helped out of the billiard hall by a policewoman.

She was wrapped in a thin gray blanket, and the band-aid on her knee was stained red with blood.

The policewoman asked her if she wanted an ambulance, and she shook her head.

When asked if she wanted to notify her parents, she remained silent for a while before giving them a phone number.

When the policewoman went to make the call, she sat alone on the plastic stool by the door, the sunlight shining directly on her face, making her eyes sting.

Her fingers unconsciously twisted the edge of the blanket, the same image replaying repeatedly in her mind.

She lunged at Zhang Yifan, but he dodged to the side.

She lay on the ground, and he said, "It's just something I did."

I didn't care about you, it was just something I did on a whim.

She lowered her head and buried her face in the blanket, which smelled of disinfectant mixed with the salty taste of her own tears.

When Zhao Rong was brought out, she passed in front of her.

Two policemen were holding her up, one on each side. Her wrists were handcuffed, and her hair was down, covering half of her face.

She paused half a step in front of Lin Wanqing, her lips moving slightly.

Lin Wanqing looked up, and the two stared at each other for less than a second.

Zhao Rong's eyes held neither the resentment nor smugness Lin Wanqing had expected, but only a weariness as if all her strength had been drained.

Her lips twitched, it was hard to tell if she was laughing or crying, and then she was pushed forward by the police, her head down as she got into the police car.

As Lin Wanqing watched the police car drive away, she suddenly remembered something: there was still a box of unfinished strawberry yogurt in Zhao Rong's drawer.

When Zhang Yifan and Zong Wen returned to school, lunch break was still ongoing.

The iron fence at the school gate was half open. The tea egg stall that Zhou Degui had kicked over yesterday morning was gone, and a few dried tea leaves were scattered on the ground.

Zhang Yifan paused in front of the empty stall.

Zong Wen followed his gaze and clicked his tongue, "I wonder if the old lady will still come."

Zhang Yifan didn't say anything, but after glancing at the dried tea leaves left on the ground, he walked towards the teaching building.

Back in the classroom, Zhang Yifan had just sat down when his phone vibrated in his pocket.

He took it out and glanced at it—Shen Zhiyi.

It wasn't a WeChat message; it was a short news article.

Shen Zhiyi did not have his WeChat.

He stared at the nickname for half a second before remembering where the text message came from.

In the morning, when she was being chased by Abbess Miejue at Xiaoxi Lake, she grabbed him and ran for most of the campus. Later, they exchanged phone numbers.

"I heard about what happened at the billiards hall. Are you alright?"

Zhang Yifan typed a few words and then deleted them.

I typed a few more words, then deleted them.

In the end, he only replied with two words: "It's nothing."

He put his phone on the table and opened the English test paper.

Two minutes later, the screen lit up again.

"Call the police first next time."

Zhang Yifan looked at these five words and couldn't suppress the urge to smile.

He could almost picture Shen Zhiyi's expression when she sent that text message. It was probably exactly the same as when she said "it's not for you" yesterday. She was clearly worried, but she insisted on saying it in the most businesslike tone.

What a stubborn little girl.

"Received," he replied.

Zongwen peeked out from behind him, his neck stretched out as far as it could go.

Zhang Yifan slammed his phone down on the table with such speed that even he felt a little guilty.

Zong Wen saw nothing, but became even more excited: "What are you hiding? Is she the school beauty? She must be the school beauty! Is she concerned about you? I knew it! I could tell when she came to see you this morning!"

"What did you figure out?"

"You can tell she treats you differently! Who is Shen Zhiyi? She's usually too lazy to even talk to guys, but she's contacted you three times in two days! Once with the challenge, once at Xiaoxi Lake, and just now again. Have you seen her contact any other guys? No! Not a single one!"

Zhang Yifan picked up his pen and began doing English reading.

"Yifan, don't pretend you can't hear me. I'm telling you something serious. You've completely cut ties with Lin Wanqing, and if you don't get on Shen Zhiyi's good side soon..."

Zong Wen reached out and poked his shoulder.

"You're really destined to be single forever."

"Do the problems."

In the first period of the afternoon, when Fu Kai walked in with a thermos, his gaze swept around the classroom, lingered for a moment on Lin Wanqing's empty seat, and then casually opened his lesson plan.

He didn't ask where Lin Wanqing had gone, which meant he had obviously already received the notification.

When get out of class ended, Zong Wen ran back from outside with a look on his face that said, "I've got some big news." He leaned close to Zhang Yifan's ear and whispered, "Peng Kaifei took the afternoon off. I heard from the long jump team that his dad was summoned by the disciplinary committee today. The house is a complete mess; his mom cried all morning."
