Chapter 52: The year-end police crackdown on organized crime begins, causing a major upheaval in Lon

The first snow fell silently.

Snowflakes, white as hairs, drifted down under the streetlights. The temperature was minus six degrees Celsius, and the wind felt like serrated blades on our faces.

More than fifty riot control Iveco vans were parked in the city police station compound.

The exhaust pipe roared and spewed out hot air, mixed with the acrid smell of burning diesel, which filled the yard.

Li Jianguo stood on the steps, his neck hunched over.

He held the half-smoked Red Plum cigarette in his hand; the ash was long and burnt out, and when the wind blew it, it smeared his sleeve.

"Pah." He spat out the cigarette butt from his mouth and used the tip of his leather shoe to crush it into the snowdrift.

The old man sniffed his nose, which was red from the cold, and picked up the dented thermos.

Captain Gu, wrapped in a military overcoat, ran over, his feet sinking deep into the snow.

He ran while rubbing his frozen hands, exhaling large puffs of white breath.

"Chief, it's twelve o'clock." Captain Gu's voice trembled, his teeth chattering. "The personnel from all the branches and the armed police detachment are all at their designated positions."

"Move." Li Jianguo lifted the lid of the cup and took a big gulp of the cooled tea.

Ice crystals slid down his esophagus, causing his chest to clench violently.

He pointed towards the gate: "Tonight, not a single mouse is allowed to escape!"

The red and blue police lights instantly tore through the darkness of Longhai City.

The piercing sirens blared through the empty streets, shaking the snow off the tree branches.

Abandoned car repair shop in the west of the city.

This is the hideout where Zhao Hongyuan secretly keeps his group of professional thugs.

The roller shutter door was half-drawn, revealing a broken tin stove burning inside.

The low-quality coal emitted a pungent sulfurous smell when burned, mixed with the stench of a dozen or so grown men's feet.

A thug with dyed yellow hair was shirtless, with his feet propped up on the table.

He held two playing cards in his hand, a cigarette dangling from his mouth: "A royal flush! Pay up! I'm on a winning streak tonight..."

He hadn't finished speaking.

"Clang!"

The rusty roller shutter door, along with its frame, was smashed and sent flying by a black armored demolition vehicle.

The twisted sheet metal crashed onto the concrete floor, scattering coal dust everywhere.

Fully armed special police rushed in, the cold glint of their riot shields blinding them.

"Police! Don't move! Put your hands on your head and squat down!"

The blond-haired man was so startled that his hand trembled, and the cigarette butt fell onto the bare thigh, burning him and making him yell.

He subconsciously reached under the table for the machete.

A foot wearing a combat boot stomped down hard, crushing his hand and the hilt of his knife into the mud.

"Holy crap! It broke! Officer, I didn't move!"

The blond-haired man howled in his hoarse voice.

The cold handcuffs clicked onto his wrists, leaving a red mark.

The same scene is playing out in every corner of the city.

The Heaven on Earth Bathing Center in the old town.

Before the several burly men with tattooed arms who were guarding the place could react, they were forced to the wet, slippery tile floor.

The lobby manager was so frightened that his crotch was soaked with sweat, and he trembled as he handed over the safe key.

The underground Pai Gow game in the south of the city.

A dozen or so gamblers jumped out of the back window.

As soon as I landed, I saw a row of armed police officers standing in neat rows below, their guns emitting a chilling aura.

A bald hoodlum squatted in the snow, his nose running from the cold.

He nudged his companion next to him with his elbow.

"Second, Second Dog...why don't we join the Sihai Group?"

The bald man sniffled, his face full of frustration.

"I heard that right now, he's sitting in his office with underfloor heating, eating tangerines in front of his computer. The two of us are here eating slush."

The one called Er Gou rolled his eyes and spat out a mouthful of bloody saliva.

"Give me a break! They require applicants to pass a labor law exam! You can't even write your own name properly; people would consider you illiterate if you were cleaning toilets!"

At three in the morning, the snow fell even more heavily.

The halo of the streetlights was shattered by the snowflakes, turning into fluffy patches of light.

The entire traditional underworld of Longhai City was turned upside down overnight.

The usually arrogant gang leaders and big brothers were now all wilted like frostbitten eggplants, lining up to be stuffed into the prison van.

Li Jianguo stood next to the communications command vehicle at the intersection.

The walkie-talkie crackled with battle reports from various branch offices, interspersed with static.

"Report to command center: The remaining strongholds of the Sanlian Gang in the east of the city have been completely wiped out."

"Forty-seven suspects were arrested at the Chengbei Billiards Hall den, and one hundred and twenty controlled knives were seized."

"The financial ledgers of Hongyuan Group, involved in organized crime, have been seized..."

Captain Gu took off his training cap and shook off the snow.

He climbed out of the car, clutching a stack of warm fax papers in his hand.

"Chief, they've almost all been killed." Captain Gu scratched the stubble on his chin.

"None of Zhao Hongyuan's lackeys escaped. Longhai City is finally at peace."

Li Jianguo remained silent.

He placed the thermos on the hood of the car and picked at the tea stains on the inside of the cup with his fingers.

The old man raised his eyelids and glanced at the gray night sky in the distance.

Snowflakes fell on his eyebrows and melted into water droplets.

"Peace and quiet?"

Li Jianguo chuckled, his lips twitching slightly.

He snatched the list from Captain Gu's hand.

Rough fingertips traced the pages, turning directly to the last one.

There was a big circle drawn in red on it.

Li Jianguo's finger stopped right in the middle of the red circle and poked it hard, making a harsh rubbing sound on the paper.

"The big fish hasn't even been touched yet, what are you so excited about?"

Captain Gu looked in the direction he was pointing.

My breath hitched.

Li Jianguo turned around and kicked away the snow at his feet.

He took out a walkie-talkie from his pocket and pressed the call button.

"All squadrons, listen up! Leave two groups of men to escort the vehicle."

The old man's voice traveled through the city on the radio waves.

"The remaining SWAT officers, assemble downstairs at the Sihai Group headquarters building in ten minutes!"

Captain Gu stared wide-eyed, stammering anxiously.

"Chief, Chief! You're really going? They're probably livestreaming to sell agricultural products right now..."

Li Jianguo snorted coldly.

He grabbed the thermos from the car hood and tucked it under his arm.

"Stop talking nonsense. A gangster is a gangster. Even if they're wearing a disguise, I can still smell the stench on them."

He squinted, staring at the neon-lit building in the city center.

"Captain Gu, get in the car! I'm going to see what kind of trouble that kid Su Ye can cause tonight!"
