One Piece: Starting with Sharingan, First Mate Uchiha
Chapter 309 Traitors Within the Navy, Ruthless Black Stick
Just as Luffy casually remarked "on the way,"
Amidst the wind, snow, and thick fog outside the main gate of the research institute, a series of disordered and heavy footsteps suddenly echoed.
Smoker and Tashigi led the G-5 branch naval soldiers, supporting each other and panting, as they rushed out of the gas-filled, desperate situation.
Smoker's iconic Justice Coat was now tattered and torn.
He was breathing heavily, as if his lungs were on fire.
When he raised his head, his sharp, eagle-like eyes were fixed on the open space in front of him, and his face instantly turned ashen.
He could clearly see that Trafalgar Law, one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea who should have been at odds with the Straw Hat crew, was standing safely with them.
There was absolutely no sign of hostility between the two sides.
"really……"
Smoker chewed up the last half of his cigar, veins bulging on his forehead, his voice filled with suppressed rage.
"Trafalgar, you bastard, you actually teamed up with the Straw Hat Pirates!"
"What do you take your position as a Shichibukai for?!"
Faced with Smoker's murderous gaze, Law simply pressed down his polka-dot hat expressionlessly, offering no explanation.
Luffy, however, was completely oblivious to the tense hostility.
He pointed ahead, his clear, large eyes suddenly lighting up:
"Ah! It's Smoke Man! You actually came here too!"
With the arrival of the main force of the Navy, the Straw Hat Pirates instantly lost their relaxed expressions.
Zoro gently pushed the tsuba away with his thumb, Sanji stomped his toes on the ground, and everyone gripped their weapons, ready to fight at any moment.
However, before the hostility between the two sides could fully erupt and escalate into armed conflict.
A pungent stench suddenly swept in from behind the group like a tsunami.
Although Victor's devastating sword strike had forcibly severed the island's terrain, forcing most of the slime's main body and venom into the abyss.
However, the lingering toxic gas in the air, propelled by the strong sea breeze, was rapidly spreading towards the last safe zone in front of the research institute's gate.
"Hiss hiss hiss—!"
A chilling sound rang out, and the edge of the purple poisonous fog just touched the rocks and debris on the ground.
Those hard objects were instantly petrified, then turned into a cloud of grayish-white powder that dissipated in the wind.
Faced with this indiscriminate and terrifying deadly gas, everyone standing here, whether they were unruly pirates or marines representing justice, deeply felt the approach of death.
"Now is not the time to daydream and reminisce! Let's all go inside and talk!" Viktor said helplessly.
"Frankie! Do it!"
Sanji roared, and his legs instantly burst into blazing flames.
"SUPER—Watch this!"
Franky clasped his arms together, and a dazzling light shone from his palms.
"Devil's Gale Kick - Crushing Blow!" "Franky - Radical Beam!"
The two main forces unleashed their furious attacks simultaneously on a spare, thick alloy door on the side of the research institute.
With a deafening roar, the alloy door, strong enough to withstand artillery fire, was blasted open with a huge gap.
"Quick! Get in there!"
In this life-or-death situation, no one hesitated any longer.
The Marines, the Straw Hat Pirates, and the enormous children carried by centaurs rushed into the dimly lit passageway inside the research institute.
Just as the last naval soldier narrowly escaped through the gate...
"Clang—Boom!"
The heavy, thick alloy doors of the research institute slammed shut behind everyone.
The heavy clanking of machinery echoed through the empty corridor, completely isolating it from the deadly purple toxic fog outside.
Before everyone could catch their breath after surviving the ordeal, a crackling sound of electricity suddenly came from the loudspeaker above their heads.
Immediately afterwards, Caesar's extremely triumphant and ear-piercing laughter exploded in everyone's ears:
"Whoosh! Welcome to my underground death labyrinth!"
"I was originally worried about how to capture you all in one fell swoop, but I never expected that you would all crawl into my cage like a bunch of stupid mice!"
Caesar's voice revealed undisguised cruelty and madness:
"Now that we're in, nobody's leaving alive!"
"All of you stay here obediently and be the perfect guinea pigs for my latest poison gas experiments! Whoosh whoosh whoosh whoosh!"
As Caesar pressed the red start button hard in the control room.
The originally spacious passageway inside the research institute suddenly began to shake violently.
Accompanied by deafening mechanical roars, thick steel partitions on the ceiling and the walls on both sides began to move wildly.
"Boom! Boom! Boom!"
Like a giant steel maze rapidly collapsing, the isolation walls ruthlessly separated the originally crowded people.
Pirates, marines, and children were scattered into countless dark, intricate, and bottomless corridors amidst screams and chaos.
……
After a series of ear-piercing metallic scraping sounds, silence finally returned to the surroundings.
In the midst of the chaos, Smoker, in order to protect Tashigi from being hit by a falling barrier, pulled her into a secluded, dimly lit metal corridor.
At this point, both ends of the passage were blocked, and they were completely separated from the main naval force.
Smoker clenched his fists, warily surveying the dark surroundings, a layer of cold sweat beading on his forehead.
Just as he was about to look for an exit, his pupils suddenly contracted slightly.
In the dim, interlacing shadows at the front of the corridor, a tall figure stood silently from behind.
The man was wearing a wide-brimmed vice admiral's coat, a symbol of naval justice.
Although he could only see the back, when Smoker saw the other person's face turn to the side, that familiar face that was always stern and now had half a half-eaten hamburger patty stuck to it, instantly relaxed his tense nerves.
"The base commander of Vergo?!"
Smoker strode forward, his tone a mixture of doubt and relief at seeing his colleague.
"What are you doing here all of a sudden? Shouldn't you be stationed at Branch G-5?"
"But you've come at the right time. That heartless bastard Caesar is secretly conducting inhumane human experiments and even tried to use poison gas to wipe out our entire navy!"
"We must now..."
However, before Smoker could finish speaking, his urgent report came to an abrupt halt.
The man in front, called Vergo, suddenly turned around.
His face showed no hint of the pleasantries of a long-awaited reunion, nor any concern for his colleague's perilous situation.
Those eyes held a chilling, piercing coldness, as if they were looking at a dead person.
The moment he turned around, the seemingly ordinary bamboo stick in Vergo's hand was instantly covered by a layer of pitch-black Armament Haki.
Without any warning, Vergo moved with lightning speed.
His arm muscles bulged suddenly, and he mercilessly smashed the jet-black bamboo into Smoker's head, who was caught off guard!
"Bang--!!!"
A dull thud echoed through the cramped corridor.
Vergo's attack was extremely ruthless, and was entirely aimed at taking a life.
Although Smoker managed to raise his Seastone Jitte to parry the attack at the last moment when he was facing death, he relied on the instinctive reaction he had developed over many years of fighting.
But that overwhelming and domineering force directly shattered his defenses.
"Wow!"
Smoker let out a miserable groan, his tall body flying into the air as if hit by a speeding train.
He slammed heavily against the hard metal wall behind him, creating a huge dent, before crashing to the ground. A mouthful of hot blood gushed out, staining his clothes red.
"Lieutenant General!!!"
Tashigi, standing to the side, was so shocked by this sudden turn of events that her mind went blank.
She stared wide-eyed in disbelief at the base commander who was usually loved and respected by all the naval officers and soldiers of the G-5 branch.
Her hands gripped the knife hilt, her voice trembling violently:
"Lieutenant General Vergo... What are you doing! Stop it! We're on the same side!"
Vergo remained expressionless in the face of Tashigi's desperate questioning.
He slowly raised his hand and casually wiped the half-eaten hamburger patty stuck to his face with his thumb, his eyes cold and devoid of any human emotion.
He walked slowly with heavy steps to Smoker, who lay in a pool of blood.
He raised his foot, clad in a shiny leather shoe, and stomped heavily on Smoker's chest.
Vergo looked down at him and slowly began to speak:
"One of us? Don't be so presumptuous and get into such a ridiculous misunderstanding, Smoker."
"I've been a pirate from the very beginning."
"I have been working diligently within the Navy for many years, climbing step by step to the position of base commander."
"It's just to cover up the island's dark secrets for the 'young master'."
Upon hearing these words, Smoker gritted his teeth, enduring the excruciating pain in his chest that felt like his bones were breaking.
His eyes were bloodshot with extreme anger as he stared intently at Vergo's hypocritical face.
"Young Master... One of the Seven Warlords of the Sea, Doflamingo the Joker?!"
"I see... I was wondering about that!"
"In recent years, the G-5 branch has frequently received desperate reports of children going missing in the surrounding waters, but all of them have been treated lightly by superiors as ordinary maritime disasters and accidents, without any investigation being initiated!"
"So, it was all you bastard who was pulling the strings behind the scenes, abusing your power to cover up their crimes!"
Listening to Smoker's accusations, Vergo's face, as hard as rock, remained silent, showing no remorse or guilt.
"You know too much, Smoker."
"If we let you leave alive, things will get very complicated."
"But don't worry, as long as we kill you both in this unknown corner."
"Then we can conveniently shift all the blame onto that self-righteous, brainless Caesar, and the young master's business can continue to operate smoothly."
A cold, cruel glint flashed in Vergo's eyes as he once again raised the black bamboo pole high in his hand:
"I'm sorry, Smoker."
"If you really have to blame someone, you can only blame your own stupidity for letting you stumble into this hell you should never have come to at this time."
