Chapter 150 Darkness Did Not Stand Up for Us | Volume 3: No One Answers

The text in the bottom right corner remained for eleven seconds.

[No response, location confirmed.]

It has no coordinates, no source node, and no account that writes to the logs. The public anomaly map has stopped aggregating, and the page should only have one static archived copy left, but that line of text seems to seep out from the back of the screen, pressing down on all the known fields.

The technician did not open it.

Xu Wangshu first instructed each node to truncate the public pages, then switched the main control panel to read-only mode. Samples were taken from the browser cache, server copy, and local screen memory. The words in the three samples were identical, but their appearance times differed by 0.7 seconds. No one could determine where it came from, or even confirm whether the three instances represented the same occurrence.

"The regulations have changed," the archivist suddenly said.

The "Temporary Regulations for Handling Unknown Contacts" on the table was not online. The paper was printed from a blank printer before the meeting, with the seal intact across the binding. There was originally a half-page blank space between Articles 9 and 10 to supplement on-site restrictions. At this moment, ink was appearing on its own in the blank space.

No pen fell, and no hand approached.

The first horizontal stroke was slow, as if someone was probing for direction beneath the paper fibers. Then came folded strokes, vertical lines, and a string of symbols that couldn't be categorized into any existing character set. They maintained a spacing resembling that of characters, yet no one could read them. After the last symbol appeared, the paper fell silent again, the ink as black as the original text of the regulation.

Some suggested immediately invoking the entire semantic model, while others wanted Lin Jibai to compare the remaining channels. Xu Wangshu approved neither.

"Separate isolation," she said, "without the right to interpret."

The entire page of regulations, along with a transparent placemat, was carried into a disconnected evidence box. The original document was not cut, traced, or had any unknown symbols copied into the text of the regulations; three archivists each recorded the shapes they saw, describing only the strokes, positions, and times of change, without writing "like a command," "like a response," or "like a signature." Any model output could only serve as a hypothesis to be verified; it could not acquire the right to interpret that half-page of blank space, much less announce what the other party had said.

Lu Chenggong stared at the evidence box: "But it chose the regulations."

"This is a phenomenon," Lin Jibai replied from his toolbox. "It's not a question for a defense."

His voice still had a layer of fine, gritty distortion, and he paused once before continuing.

"The human world is not a thesis defense. We don't need to prove our understanding to the darkness, nor do we need to hand in an answer on the spot just because it's written in a blank space."

Qin Lan then issued a shutdown order.

All public displays for unknown observations are now disabled. The anomaly map no longer provides a real-time page, displays the number of visitors, or retains the global layout for continued viewing of observed behaviors. Previously published de-identified data has been converted to regular archive queries, which can only be searched by specific events and cannot be scaled up to a world map.

The internal review has not been cancelled.

Each node retains its original local records, and the master controller only receives copies verified on-site; reviewers take turns entering, and there are no permanent observation seats. Contaminated pages, unfamiliar text, blank door magnets at 03:17, and gray marks from various locations are numbered separately and must not be automatically linked without physical evidence. Closing the display is not turning a blind eye, and retaining the review process is not continuing to build a spectator seat for the unknown.

A new principle has been written into the first page of the handling process: No response does not mean no one is responding.

Therefore, silence cannot be interpreted as "the other party does not exist," nor as "the other party has agreed." A call without response should only be recorded as no response received; darkness without an answer should only be recorded as an unknown answer. No one may use silence to identify visitors, enemies, oracles, or authorizations.

After the principles were written down, the unknown text in the blank spaces of the regulations remained unchanged.

The Deep Space Silent Screen remained unchanged.

The black doorframe still faces the now-closed public map, as if waiting for them to light up the page again. There's no countdown in the main control room, no collective reading, and no one asks if it's satisfied.

Wen Zhaolin placed a sealed bag on the table. Inside the bag were numbered temporary worker tags.

That name tag had appeared on a duty roster where no one should have been, and was later replaced by 473 specific names. The tag still read "Chief Duty Officer," but the name field only had a zero. Some suggested leaving it in the exhibition hall as the most tangible evidence of the victory over those ten days.

"The exhibition then becomes proof of who it's for," Wen Zhaolin said.

Qin Lan approved the destruction. This doesn't mean deleting the record of the ID number zero, but rather terminating the employee ID card's continued association with the employee's identity.

The work badge is first scanned offline to record its material, size, location, and contact chain. The scanned document is entered into the human internal archives but not connected to the anomaly map or sent to deep space. Subsequently, Zhou Jianguo put the work badge into the industrial shredder at the western suburbs repair point. The plastic shell cracked first, the chip was crushed into fine copper shavings by the rollers, and the white piece marked with "zero" was folded three times between the gears, eventually leaving only a corner the size of a fingernail.

The fragments were neither pieced back together nor burned into ritualistic ash.

They are sealed away as ordinary physical evidence, serving only as evidence for humanity itself: there was once an arrangement that attempted to create people who never finished get off work, but humanity refused. Evidence is not responsible for gaining recognition from the unknown, nor for proving to those who come after that they have won.

After the crusher stopped, no one spoke in the main control room for a long time.

This silence wasn't about waiting for a response. Qin Lan changed her ten-day consecutive shift to a rotating shift, signed the last handover form, and went to the cafeteria to get a bowl of noodles that had long since gone cold. Xu Wangshu checked the seal on the evidence box, turned off the explanation model, and reminded the archivist to water the pothos on the windowsill before leaving get off work. Lu Chenggong returned the broken bow to the equipment cabinet, only taking a cleaning cloth; he wouldn't be responsible for shooting tonight. Wen Zhaolin handed over the last old key and then went to queue up to replace his ordinary access card.

The hospital resumed normal visiting hours. Liu Min would still glance at the brakes when pushing the medicine cart, but no longer checked the number of seconds it took for the cup to fall. Zhang Hui was drawing bus routes for visitors at the exhibition hall's information desk; his red pen ran out of ink, so he switched to a blue pen halfway through. After putting the jack back in its place, Chen Rui was sent off to lunch by Zhou Jianguo; the breakfast shop owner disassembled the spare water tank, washed the third basin of dishes, and, complaining about the slow drainage, called to urge normal maintenance.

They did not revert to the state they were in before the anomaly occurred.

They simply regained a concrete but disorganized next thing.

Xiaoman sat back down next to the toolbox and unscrewed a bottle of strawberry yogurt. The cap clicked softly, and the straw made another click as it pierced the seal.

The number forty on the medical screen flashed.

Lin Jibai tapped the side of the box.

"What kind of evidence is this?" Xiaoman asked.

"You're drinking yogurt."

"Anything else?"

"I heard you."

The medical staff did not automatically add this sound to the treatment program. Lin Jibai's previous lack of understanding of the sixth second still remained; he remembered his father speaking, remembered Xiaoman asking "Are you alright?", but he couldn't recall Lin Wangchuan's answer at that particular second. The yogurt sound could become an anchor, but only he could choose it; it couldn't be fixed into a permanent stimulus by the system simply because the value fluctuated.

The medical staff asked, "Do you want to set the current sound as the anchor for this autonomous descent? It can be revoked at any time and is not related to the content of the sixth second."

"Yes," Lin Jibai said.

Xiaoman didn't repeat her father's words; she simply tapped the straw against the bottle twice. That was her actual action at that moment, not a voiceover to compensate for her lost memories.

The number paused for more than ten seconds, then slowly became forty-one.

After the medic checked each item, the record clearly stated: stability level rose to 41; no upgrade; body not recovered; access permissions unchanged; the sixth-second statement was still missing. The toolbox remained unopened, and Lin Jibai did not obtain a new pair of hands from the remaining channel. He could only speak a sentence more completely than before.

"Can Forty-One take over one more shift?" someone asked in the shift channel.

"No," Lin Jibai replied. "My shift today ends at the handover point. 41 isn't a permanent employee badge."

A string of old maintenance codes came from the other end of the channel.

The start was slightly slow, and the last beat was always half a beat shorter than standard. Xiaoman immediately recognized it as Lin Wangchuan. The signal was too weak to carry a complete sentence; it was only enough for him to finish five beats on his own.

In the old lunar surface maintenance manual, that string of codes does not mean evacuation or loss of contact.

It's time to get off work.

Xiaoman placed her hand next to the application panel, but did not apply for an extension. Lin Wangchuan's loop went silent after sending the off-duty code; no one asked where he went, and no one wrote that the lack of response was a disappearance.

"Dad's off work," she said.

"Hmm." Lin Jibai paused for a moment, "I won't take on the permanent job either."

For the first time, a clear end date appeared after his name on the duty roster. The handover was not to another person who had to stay forever, but to three internal review tasks that could be paused; if no one was available to take over the next shift, the tasks remained in pending status, without forcibly recalling anyone from sleep, meals, or their own lives.

In the evening, the contaminated public page completed its final offline sealing. The black door frame did not shatter after losing its display object; its color simply faded little by little, eventually blending into the background of the silent screen. The half-page of unknown text remained in the evidence box, offering no explanation for number zero, no proof of Lin Wangchuan's whereabouts, and no answer to whether Lin Jibai should read it back in the sixth second.

The darkness did not answer for them.

Humanity did not stop at the problem because of this.

Qin Lan finished her cold noodles, Xu Wangshu turned off the light in the archives room, and a small ring of water seeped from the bottom of the potted green plant. The shredder in the western suburbs went into maintenance, the hospital's night shift staff signed for the medicine cabinet, and the last visitor in the exhibition hall went to the wrong exit and came back. Xiaoman threw an empty yogurt bottle into the trash can with a crisp sound. Lin Jibai heard it but didn't ask the system to save it a second time.

The last line of the internal review record for that day contained only one sentence: No unknown response received; the boundary is still maintained by the human community itself.

Late at night, only the duty lights remained on in the main control cabin, which had been removed from public display. The deep-space relay satellite completed a link self-check as scheduled, without aligning with the door frame or sending any greetings to any unknown coordinates.

Before the self-check ended, an extra short sentence appeared in the satellite's local cache that did not belong to the ground transmission.

It wasn't projected onto the public screen; it only lit up in the internal review queue.

After zero comes one.
