Chapter 148 The Father in Nine Seconds | Volume 3: No One Answers

Gray fingerprints have no life temperature.

The breakfast shop owner stood outside the kitchen door, his hands raised so they were clearly visible to the security camera. The water in the sink had stopped flowing, but the fingerprint hadn't dispersed with the water film. It clung to the stainless steel bottom, its lines deeper than a normal fingerprint, as if someone had drawn an extremely fine gray line under the metal.

On-site personnel checked the fingerprints of the boss, employees, and the early shift deliveryman, and also retrieved maintenance records since the sink's installation. None matched. The foot valve showed no signs of an external switch, the backup circuit was not activated, and the valve core only sank one inch on its own when no one was stepping on it.

Xu Wangshu ordered the pool to be sealed off, but not the shop.

The kitchen replaced the water tank with a spare one physically disconnected from the original piping, and the fryer and gas were re-inspected and put back into use. The bus driver, rushing to his early shift, finished his fried dough sticks as usual, paid, and left, without being detained in the shop to repeatedly recall his past just because he happened to be the first customer. The owner didn't need to prove whether the gray-clad man in his memory had actually been there or not; he only needed to record the valve movements and marks he saw on the bottom of the tank.

"It's proving that it can bypass human decisions." Lu Chenggong watched the transmitted video.

"No." Xu Wangshu placed yesterday's memories of tomorrow side by side with the reality of this moment. "It still borrowed a place that had been arranged. The memory specified the kitchen faucet in advance, and the boss didn't open the door for it, so it left a trace of its visit there."

"Traces do not count as entry."

"But traces can be accumulated."

What the outside may not be a door that is actually open. If the same gray substance keeps appearing on hospital doorknobs, exhibition hall model cabinets, suburban manhole covers, and breakfast shop sinks, the next report can say: it was found independently in many real locations, therefore it was indeed here.

Number zero did not exist originally. Once enough evidence of its "visit" has been gathered, it will transform from a fake duty officer into a visitor who has been personally registered by humans.

Xu Wangshu instructed each node to inspect the areas involved in the expired memories of tomorrow, but not to follow the memory replay path. Nurses only checked door locks during routine inspections; exhibition hall staff did not open model cabinets to look for gray marks; and the maintenance point in the western suburbs did not lift manhole covers. As a result, gray marks were still found in eleven places: the back of door hinges, unused telephone receivers, the inside of fire hydrant glass, and even on a never-opened materials requisition form.

They have no physical connection to each other, and their shapes are not exactly the same, yet they all resemble a clearly directional arrow. The tip points to the location in the abnormal memory where someone should have performed the action.

As the technician was preparing to erase the electronic copy, two sets of knocks suddenly sounded from the bottom of the toolbox.

The first group is Lin Jibai. His movements are very light, and his rhythm is still within medical restrictions.

The second group came from a deeper, residual passage, older and slower. Each short tone was half a beat slower than the standard service code, like someone who had used a wrench for decades, knowing the procedure required striking the center, but whose wrist always habitually leaned towards the tube wall.

Xiaoman stood up abruptly.

"dad."

The tapping did not elicit a response or address; it simply repeated the brief access request.

Xu Wangshu inspected the offset slot. The signal did not pass through the external suggested interface, nor did it invoke Lin Wangchuan's voiceprint from the publicly available files; the vibration origin was located inside the residual loop, and the error distribution matched his past maintenance records. It was insufficient to prove Lin Wangchuan's complete return, only enough to support a restricted communication request.

The medical staff listed the risks: the channel can currently only withstand nine seconds of autonomous short-term access; if it exceeds nine seconds, the residual loop may pull Lin Jibai in the opposite direction, or it may forcibly fill in the father's expression into a more complete person.

Qin Lan looked at Xiaoman: "You are a family member, you can object."

Xiaoman stared at the faint waveform, her nose already red, and still asked, "It will automatically disconnect after nine seconds, right?"

"The hardware disconnected before anyone could finish speaking."

"Then press for nine seconds."

Qin Lan approved.

It's not a recall, not a personality restoration, and not a farewell for the family and father. The record is narrowly written: Lin Wangchuan's residual loop, nine-second autonomous short-term access, only for illustrating the handling of the gray fingerprint; at that time, the physical circuit will be disconnected, and automatic continuation will not be accepted.

The countdown wasn't projected onto the public screen; only Xu Wangshu, Qin Lan, Xiaoman, and the medical staff could see the local stopwatch.

Connection initiated.

In the first second, four clear words were squeezed out from the hoarse sound.

"Fingerprints are like road signs."

There was only one metallic friction in the second second. Xu Wangshu didn't urge him, nor did he use an algorithm to fill in the pause. Lin Wangchuan needed to decide what to say next, and the blank space also took up his nine seconds.

In the third second, he said, "Don't wipe it, turn around."

These two short sentences establish the connection between the preceding and following sentences. The gray fingerprint is not proof of identity that has already been reached from the outside, but rather a signpost for those who come later; deletion only shifts the signpost, while proper handling changes the destination it points to.

In the fourth second, the circuit voltage dropped. The medic's hand stopped next to the circuit breaker button; there was no gain.

After five seconds, Xiaoman finally couldn't hold back any longer: "Dad, are you alright?"

She covered her mouth as soon as she asked the question. She used one second of those nine seconds; she neither apologized nor withdrew the question. It was an inquiry she was willing to make at that moment, not a technical blunder.

At the sixth second, Lin Wangchuan replied, "I'm still here, don't add overtime."

His voice was even softer than the first two sentences. "I'm still here" didn't explain his state of being, nor did it promise to return; but the second half was very clear. He knew about the access restrictions and refused the concern of his family and technicians in trying to reconnect him.

In the seventh second, there were only three very faint breathing sounds. Xiaoman bit the back of her hand and didn't ask any more questions.

At the eighth second, Lin Wangchuan typed out a string of old maintenance codes. The long and short tones were missing half a beat, but it was still recognizable.

At the ninth second, the physical circuit breaker tripped.

The last echo was trapped in the passage, neither extended by the system nor uttered as a farewell by anyone. Xiaoman's tears fell onto the toolbox lid, her hand already reaching for the application panel, but stopping two fingers' distance from the button.

"Nine seconds are up," she said. Xiaoman did not request an extension.

Qin Lan did not ask if an exception should be made. The medical staff did not submit an extension on her behalf, citing her emotional distress. The application form remained blank.

Lin Wangchuan did not return in his entirety. In the nine seconds he was granted permission, he autonomously selected a few sentences and a string of maintenance codes, and then retreated back to the remaining loop where the full picture could not be confirmed.

Xu Wangshu retrieved an early lunar surface maintenance manual. The old inspection code corresponded to a rarely used procedure: a return mark.

During the early stages of pipeline construction on the lunar surface, if personnel find a directional sign pointing to a collapsed area, they should not simply remove it. Subsequent maintenance workers will not see the sign and will continue following the old route. The person who found it should preserve the sign, redirect the arrow to the nearest public checkpoint, and record the location of the anomaly, the time of discovery, and the reason for the impassable route at the checkpoint. The sign remains, but its meaning changes from "follow this route" to "come here to verify this incorrect route."

"The outside used gray fingerprints as proof of visit," Qin Lan said. "We changed it to an anomaly index."

The response plan was subsequently revised.

The breakfast shop's sink will no longer be kept sealed as secret evidence. After material sampling was completed on-site, a visible marker will be left in its original location; the arrow will not point to the kitchen door, but rather to the city's publicly available anomaly query page. Other gray fingerprints, fake duty rosters, and traces of future visits will also be handled according to the same principle.

Public disclosure does not mean exposing the parties involved to everyone.

Hsu Wang-shu first outlined the rules for removing personal information: do not disclose names, family relationships, hospital bed numbers, precise addresses, or work details that can be deduced from the individual; do not upload original voiceprints, dream content, or personal memories of tomorrow; only retain the type of anomaly, the time interval of discovery, the regional location, the handling actions, and the verification conclusions.

Breakfast shops on the map are rewritten as "East District Public Dining Points," hospitals are only labeled "Medical Nodes," and material requisition forms in the western suburbs are only labeled "Repair Material Records." Each point is displayed separately, without automatic connections, route recommendations, or inferences about the same visitor based on similar patterns.

Each description ends with three identical fields: Discovered; Isolated or redirected; No entry constituted.

Some worry that making the map public will create panic. Qin Lan did not guarantee that it wouldn't, only opening a forum for objections and a submission portal. Anyone incorrectly associated can request further de-identification; any node can also refuse to submit information beyond what is required for verification. The map is a tool for people to check for anomalies, not a way to exchange the privacy of the entire city for a pretty map of victory.

After the first batch of return marks were completed, the gray fingerprints in the breakfast shop's sink began to turn black from the edges.

It wasn't burnt. The gray lines, as if losing their direction, gradually sank into ordinary black stains. The texture on the exhibition hall's telephone handset broke, and the arrow on the inside of the fire hydrant glass turned towards the index number on the public inspection page.

The doorframes in tomorrow's memories are beginning to fade. Some still remember there was a door there, but can no longer be sure if the person behind it ever came.

The medical screen in the toolbox flickered.

Thirty-nine.

forty.

It only rose slightly. Lin Jibai did not gain stronger access as a result, nor did he recover his health. After the medical staff rechecked the waveform, the original expression frequency and shutdown conditions were retained. That slight stability came from the weakening of the abnormal traction, not from a costless upgrade.

The consequences soon became apparent.

Lin Jibai could repeat "fingerprints are road signs" from the first second, and he also remembered "Don't wipe, turn around" from the third second and the return sign from the eighth second. He knew that Xiaoman had asked her father if he was alright in the fifth second, but he couldn't remember what his father had replied in the sixth second.

"It's empty there," he said. "I know someone spoke there, but it dissipated as soon as they touched it."

Xiaoman opened her mouth. The words were on the tip of her tongue. As soon as she said them, her father's "I'm still here" would immediately reach her brother's ears.

Just because someone else can keep it doesn't mean it has to be put back into his memory now.

"Brother," she asked softly, "I remember the sixth second. Do you want me to say it?"

The toolbox remained silent for a long time.

"Write it in the record," Lin Jibai said. "Don't read it to me yet."

Xu Wangshu leaned down to confirm: "You don't want to know?"

"I want to," his voice was still weak, "but missing someone isn't a right I can exercise. When I can read it is up to me."

Xiaoman saved the original words from the sixth second separately. The file will not be included in the public anomaly map, will not be used to fix Lin Jibai's stability, and will not serve as evidence to bring back her father. Read access is only granted to Lin Jibai himself, and the status bar states: "Content saved. He can apply to read it at any time, or he can choose not to read it."

She pushed the confirmation button to a position where the toolbox could detect it, but didn't press it for him.

The deep space silent screen lit up at that moment.

For the first time, the black doorframe that had been aimed at the crack in the human world shifted. It slowly turned at an angle that didn't belong to real space, passing over the main control module, the hospital, and all the rehearsed 03:17.

Finally, it aligned itself with that publicly displayed, anomalous map that removed personal information.
