Anti-gang campaign: Female bureau chief
Chapter 33 The Last Straw
When Sun Wei was arrested, he was trembling with fear and confessed almost without resistance—Zhou Wenxuan had ordered him to destroy these documents. Zhou Wenxuan had given him 100,000 yuan in cash and instructed him to burn all the sensitive documents in the group's office in batches.
Zhou Wenxuan also told him that if he got caught, he should say he was a thief, and never say he was from Fengmao.
"Where is Zhou Wenxuan?" the police officer interrogating Sun Wei asked.
"I don't know, I really don't know! He left after handing me the things. Before he left, he told me he was leaving Yi'an for a while and that no one should look for him," Sun Wei said with a mournful face.
"But I overheard him make a phone call, it seemed like he was talking to someone named 'Song Ya', telling Song Ya to wait for him at some dock in the north of the city."
"Northern City Wharf." Upon receiving this message, Jiang Ruolan immediately picked up the walkie-talkie.
"At the North City Wharf, all vehicles patrolling nearby, immediately assemble at the North City Wharf. Remember, do not turn on your police lights or sirens. Plainclothes officers approach. Zhou Wenxuan may be armed; proceed with extreme caution during the arrest."
At 5:10 a.m., the sky was beginning to lighten.
At the old wharf north of Yian City, a row of abandoned warehouses stood along the river, the water rippling with gray-green waves in the morning light.
The dock was piled with rusty containers and scrap iron, and the air was filled with the distinctive fishy smell of the river and the smell of rust.
Zhou Wenxuan, wearing an inconspicuous gray jacket and carrying a black travel bag, stood in front of the gangplank of a small cargo ship on the riverbank.
He had taken off his gold-rimmed glasses, his hair was messy, and his stubble from not shaving for days made this usually refined and elegant man look disheveled.
Standing next to him was a woman in her early thirties—Song Ya, an evening news anchor at Yi'an TV station. She was wearing an oversized men's coat, her face pale, and her eyes filled with fear.
The cargo ship's captain was urging them to board, saying that if they didn't leave soon it would be dawn and there would be water police patrolling the river.
Just as Zhou Wenxuan was about to step onto the springboard, a sudden sound of footsteps froze him in place.
A dozen plainclothes police officers surrounded the dock from all sides, moving so fast it was as if they suddenly appeared out of nowhere, and in an instant they completely surrounded the dock.
"Zhou Wenxuan! Stop right there!"
Zhou Wenxuan reacted faster than anyone expected—he shoved Song Ya aside, turned and ran towards the river, pulling a black hard drive from his travel bag as he ran and throwing it into the river with all his might.
The hard drive traced an arc in the morning light, then splashed into the middle of the river, creating a small ripple.
Two special police officers pounced on Zhou Wenxuan just before he was about to jump into the river and pinned him to the ground.
Zhou Wenxuan's face was pressed against the rough cement ground. His glasses flew off during the struggle, his lips were scraped, and blood mixed with mud and sand covered half of his face.
"Hard drive! Get the hard drive out!" Lu Zheng shouted into the walkie-talkie.
Ten minutes later, a police officer who was a good swimmer retrieved the hard drive from the icy river.
Fortunately, the hard drive's casing is made of waterproof material, so although it was submerged in water, the internal core storage components may not have been damaged.
The technicians immediately packed the hard drive in a sealed bag and rushed it to the provincial technical center for data recovery.
When Zhou Wenxuan was put into the police car, the expression on his face finally changed from fear to utter despair.
He stopped struggling and speaking, simply hanging his head like a sculpture whose soul had been hollowed out. Song Ya was taken to another car, crying the whole time, unable to say a word.
Jiang Ruolan stood on the dock, watching the first rays of dawn appear on the horizon.
A wisp of hair fluttered in the river breeze from under her hat. She squinted in the morning light and took a deep breath of the cold air, which carried the fishy smell of the river and the metallic scent of iron.
It's the fifth day.
On her fifth day in Yi'an, Zhao Biao was apprehended and confessed, Ren Pengfei and Qian Shouyi were apprehended and confessed, Xu Guangfa's body was found again, Zhou Wenxuan was intercepted at the last minute, and the hard drive that had been thrown into the river was undergoing data recovery.
Shen Wangshan's protective umbrella was being torn apart layer by layer—Fang Xuewen, Qin Chuan, and the nine leading cadres from various levels of Yi'an departments on Qian Shouyi's list have all been included in the investigation.
And Gu Changhe, the biggest fish, his name finally appeared in Ren Pengfei's confession—that phone call to cover up Shen Wangshan's mistake would become the key evidence to nail him down.
Footsteps sounded behind him, and Lu Zheng walked over, his face filled with barely suppressed excitement:
"Director Jiang, the preliminary interrogation results for Zhou Wenxuan are in. He said that the hard drive contained all of Fengmao Group's financial data for the past fifteen years, including complete electronic versions of internal and external accounts, as well as the time, place, amount, and person in charge of all bribery recipients."
He said he originally planned to take the hard drive with him when he left with Shen Wangshan, but Shen Wangshan told him to destroy it first. He was unwilling to do so and wanted to keep it as a lifesaver.
Jiang Ruolan took the preliminary interrogation transcript from Lu Zheng and quickly scanned it.
When her gaze swept over a certain section, her fingers suddenly stopped.
"Zhou Wenxuan said that Fengmao Group has three shareholders. Shen Wangshan holds 51%, Gu Changhe holds 30%, and there's another person who holds 19%—" She raised her head, her gaze as cold as a knife.
"Call him Gu Mingzhe."
"Gu Changhe's son?" Lu Zheng's eyes widened.
"Gu Changhe holds 30% of Fengmao's shares, and the nominee shareholder is a distant relative of his wife. His son, Gu Mingzhe, holds 19% of the shares." Jiang Ruolan slowly closed the notebook.
"This means that the Gu family holds a total of 49 percent of the shares in Fengmao Group. Nearly half of all the illegal assets accumulated by Fengmao Group over the past 30 years have flowed into Gu Changhe's pocket."
A few seconds of silence fell over the dock. Everyone was stunned by the number.
An executive vice mayor holding nearly half the shares in a criminal organization means he is not a "protector" at all—he is one of the owners of Fengmao Group, a partner of Shen Wangshan, and a co-creator of all these evils.
Jiang Ruolan handed the transcript to Lu Zheng, took out her phone, walked to the side, and dialed Zhou Pei's number.
"Zhou Pei, are you aware of the latest situation on my end?"
"Understood. The provincial technical center has received the hard drive and is working overnight to recover the data."
"The initial scan shows the hard drive's internal structure is intact, and all data should be recoverable." Zhou Pei's voice carried a suppressed excitement.
"Ruolan, do you know what this means? Once this data is restored, Shen Wangshan and Gu Changhe are completely finished. Not only them, but everyone in the entire Yi'an officialdom who was dragged down by them will not escape."
