Even if I'm a useless bum at Whampoa Military Academy, I'll be invincible in the War of Re

Chapter 54: When you're traveling, your identity is what you give yourself.

Zhao Yunwen's tactics were simple: the mantis stalks the cicada, unaware of the oriole behind; the Japanese were adept at ambushing the Nationalist army's flanks, and this tactic had proven effective time and again.

This time, the security team poked him in the back, causing Major Kuroiwa to grimace in pain.

Although the 9th Division was arrogant, its junior officers were highly skilled in tactics. When Major Kuroiwa launched a frontal attack on the 109th Regiment, he still left a company behind to protect the flank.

This time, however, he encountered a formidable opponent: the First Battalion and Artillery Battalion of the Security Regiment. They were not something his single company could withstand; they wouldn't even be enough to fill his teeth!

Zhao Yunwen's timing was impeccable, striking the Japanese at their Achilles' heel. The sudden artillery barrage threw them into chaos, paralyzing their command system for a short period.

Although the shelling caused few casualties, the resulting chaos was deadly.

At this critical moment, the security regiment sounded the charge, and the First Battalion, which had been in position beforehand, suddenly attacked from the flank of the Black Rock Brigade.

Three infantry companies were positioned two in front and one in the rear, with the machine gun company trailing behind to provide fire support.

The Second Security Regiment's offensive was extremely swift, covering a distance of several hundred meters in the blink of an eye. Submachine guns and Browning automatic rifles opened the way with continuous fire, riflemen brought up the rear for protection, and snipers took precise long-range shots.

The 60mm mortars would switch targets at a distance of 300 meters to fire at light machine guns and grenade launchers, while the machine gun company's 82mm mortars would suppress heavy machine guns, covering them with fire as soon as they appeared, with both accuracy and force.

The flanking squadron was overwhelmed by this series of attacks and was unable to retaliate; their machine guns were destroyed as soon as they started firing.

Without the suppression of machine gun fire, the Japanese defenses were easily torn apart. The first and second companies were like two sharp knives, stabbing the Japanese soldiers hard in the back.

In a short time, the defensive line was breached, and most of the Japanese soldiers in the guard platoon were killed or wounded. The remaining soldiers were pushed back into the rear.

Major Kuroiwa refused to accept his fate and instead forcibly gathered over a hundred men to launch a counterattack against the 1st Battalion of the Security Regiment. The 9th Division was indeed fierce.

This time, however, their counterattack hit a brick wall. The First Battalion of the Security Regiment completely overwhelmed them in terms of manpower, firepower, morale, and fighting spirit.

The two torrents collided, and the Japanese soldiers were instantly smashed to pieces as if hit by a heavy hammer.

The remnants of the Japanese army were annihilated, turning into corpses scattered all over the ground, which looked very relaxing.

Unwilling to accept defeat, Major Kuroiwa cut down two fleeing soldiers before he was able to gather a few dozen Japanese soldiers and attempt to block the advance of the security regiment.

Before they could even get into position, a deafening battle cry erupted from the front. The 109th Regiment, which had been under heavy attack, charged forward like a tidal wave, with Qin Qingwu at the very front, pointing the military flag.

The generals are the courage of the soldiers. Under the leadership of Qin Qingwu, the wolf king, the sons of Hunan in the 109th Regiment unleashed astonishing fighting power, like hungry wolves pouncing on the Japanese and tearing them to shreds.

The Black Rock Brigade was attacked from both sides and was forced into a series of defeats, teetering on the brink of collapse.

The deputy battalion commander rushed over, covered in blood, his eyes darting around, and said in a flustered manner:

"Kuroiwa-kun, the Chinese reinforcements have arrived. They have more than a dozen artillery pieces. This configuration is enough for at least a division!"

"If we don't retreat now, it will be too late!"

"Baka yarou! The warriors of my martial arts corps can take on ten men each. No matter how many Chinese there are, they are nothing but lambs!"

Major Kuroiwa stubbornly refused to admit his mistake, desperately trying to maintain his last shred of dignity.

"Kuroiwa-kun, even ants can kill an elephant. The Imperial Army is caught in a pincer attack; it's best to avoid direct confrontation for now!"

"Once the regimental commander arrives, we'll wipe them out."

The adjutant's words gave Major Kuroiwa a way out, and the latter stopped pretending, but still made some polite remarks:

"I will be back!"

Major Kuroiwa led the battalion headquarters to flee towards the main force of the regiment. As for the "warriors" below, they were on their own!

After the battalion headquarters fled, the Japanese troops, clinging to their last breath, collapsed completely.

Neither the security regiment nor the 109th Regiment intended to let them go. They relentlessly pursued them, slaughtering the Japanese until their blood flowed like a river. Only three out of ten managed to escape alive.

Considering that there were still large troops behind the Japanese lines, Zhao Yunwen was worried about being counterattacked and ordered the retreat to be sounded.

The battalion commander was also aware of the situation. After chasing for several miles, he stopped, took turns providing cover, and withdrew back to the starting position to quickly clean up the battlefield.

The Hunan Army also knew when to stop and returned to collect their equipment, which was all of high quality.

Qin Qingwu didn't know which unit of reinforcements had arrived, but judging from the commotion, it must have been at least a division-level force; even a brigade-level force wouldn't have this many artillery pieces.

Besides, it was someone else who saved him, so both publicly and privately, he should take the initiative to see that person.

Qin Qingwu fastened the windproof cap tightly with both hands, straightened his military cap, tugged at the hem of his uniform, and then roared:

"Deputy Regiment Commander Li, come with me to pay my respects to the commander and thank him for saving my 109th Regiment from dire straits."

When Qin Qingwu saw Zhao Yunwen, he subconsciously unfastened his clasp.

What a joke! I'm the leader of the numbers team!

Zhao Yunwen wore a playful smile. He was used to being looked down upon, and being the sixth-ranking member was his style.

Qin Qingwu had already expressed his gratitude, so the arrival of only a security team surprised him. He asked suspiciously:

"Commander Zhao, how many men do you have?"

"Less than two thousand."

Qin Qingwu wondered if he had misheard. Nearly two thousand people? And this was a security regiment?

His main force regiment had less than 1500 men and only two mortars.

"Commander Zhao, your security regiment has over a thousand people?"

Qin Qingwu's tone was clearly skeptical, which changed his understanding of the security force. Even if Jiangsu and Zhejiang were wealthy, there would only be a few hundred at most.

The Hunan Army's security regiment had a maximum of 500 men, with two men and one gun.

Zhao Yunwen, always one to make a startling statement, calmly said:

"After receiving Commander Luo's military order, Zhao was worried about the loss of the battlefield, so he led the First Battalion and the Artillery Battalion to rush over overnight. The main force arrived shortly after, and fortunately, he did not fail in his mission."

Qin Qingwu's CPU was completely shut down. Damn it, this was only one unit; the main force was on its way.

Deputy Regiment Commander Li exclaimed in surprise:

"Commander Zhao, how many men and guns does your unit actually have?"

Sure enough, when you're out there in the world, you have to give yourself your own identity.

After Zhao Yunwen put on such a show, even Deputy Commander Li's way of addressing him changed, now addressing him as "Commander Zhao" and "Your Department".

Local warlords like the Hunan Army valued strength the most.

With nearly two thousand men in one unit and a formidable artillery battalion, Zhao Yunwen truly deserved the title of commander.

Since you're going to show off, then show off properly:

"More than three thousand!"

Zhao Yunwen played a word game: three thousand was the base amount, and as for the remainder, guess for yourself.

The interpretation rests with the security forces, just like the range of a certain Eastern superpower's 191mm rocket launcher, which, when asked, is over 300 kilometers.

"Three thousand men? Commander Zhao, are you kidding me?"

Qin Qingwu subconsciously fastened the windproof buckle again; it was better to fasten it, as it was getting a bit windy.

Zhao Yunwen put away his smile and said:

"Commander Qin, let's skip the formalities."

"The Japanese could counterattack at any moment; the military situation is urgent. Let's discuss how to hold Dachang!"

This is the key point, and Zhao Yunwen's boasting was for this reason. The ownership of command for the two regiments operating in coordination was an urgent issue to be resolved.

Qin Qingwu had also thought of this problem. Although Zhao Yunwen had saved them and the security regiment was strong and well-equipped, the 109th Regiment was a large regiment, and he also wanted to fight for the command.

He decided to test the waters first:

"Commander Zhao, what's your opinion?"
