Chapter 30: The End of the 2nd Regiment
"Baka yarou, there's an ambush!"
"It must be Chinese reinforcements arriving."
Major Sato had a keen sense of the battlefield, but it was all for naught, as the 66th Regiment had already launched its general offensive.
More than two thousand men stabbed the Japanese from the flanks and rear, each blow aimed at the weak points, leaving the Japanese with almost no chance to fight back.
With the security forces on the front, they were attacked from three sides, leaving only the right flank as a way out. They were surrounded on three sides but left one side open.
The 66th Regiment moved very quickly from the west and north, and before the Japanese could react, bayonets were already pressed against their lower backs.
The 66th Regiment's concentrated firepower overwhelmed the Japanese troops, leaving them defenseless and quickly routed, making the outcome of the battle a foregone conclusion.
The 66th Regiment and the Security Regiment launched a three-pronged attack, slaughtering the Japanese soldiers and leaving them lying dead in the fields as they fled in disarray.
The Nationalist army pressed their advantage and almost completely annihilated the two companies left on the flank of Sato's battalion, with only a few dozen survivors escaping into the town.
As agreed by both sides, the final battle in the town was handed over to the security regiment, and the 66th Regiment turned its guns and headed straight for the Yamaguchi Brigade.
Prior to this, Colonel Cao Jinlun commanded over a thousand soldiers of the Third Battalion to launch an attack on the Japanese from the flank, like a sharp ox-horn knife piercing the waist of the Yamaguchi Battalion.
The Japanese troops were scattered and thrown into chaos, fighting independently.
The Second Battalion of the Security Regiment, which was blocking the enemy's advance from the front, sounded the horn of counterattack. Hundreds of officers and soldiers rushed out of the trenches and charged towards the Japanese like an overwhelming tide.
Commandos carrying Browning automatic rifles and MP38 submachine guns led the way, spraying bullets at the Japanese soldiers, causing them to fall and scatter.
Although the Japanese were fierce, their command system was paralyzed, their morale was low, and their troops and firepower were at an absolute disadvantage. They were instantly defeated when attacked from both sides.
Major Yamaguchi attempted to restrain the fleeing soldiers, brandishing his sword and killing several panicked Japanese soldiers in succession. In the end, he was stabbed through the body with a bayonet and died at the hands of the chaotic soldiers.
He who kills will always be killed.
Without Major Yamaguchi's restraint, the remaining Japanese soldiers fled in disarray, pursued relentlessly by the Nationalist army, who would not let them go even if they fled to the underworld.
The battle lost all suspense and became a one-sided massacre. The Japanese soldiers never understood how they had become lambs to the slaughter.
Are these still the cowardly Chinese?
The sporadic fighting continued until dawn. The Nationalist army pursued the fleeing Japanese soldiers from Luodian to Yuepu, and almost all of them were slaughtered. Less than 300 escaped with their lives.
At the 11th Division headquarters, Yamamuro Munetake hadn't slept all night, his eyes bloodshot, the sound of gunfire from the direction of Luodian constantly tugging at his heartstrings.
"Katayama-kun, haven't you contacted Adachi-kun yet?"
Chief of Staff Colonel Katayama Shihachi looked somber. This was the seventh time Yamamuro Munetake had asked about it, and he could only shake his head.
"You idiot, you piece of trash!"
"How could an entire regiment be out of contact?"
"That bastard Adachi Nyūzō, he really doesn't respect me, his division commander, at all!"
Katayama Shihachi remained silent. Yamamuro Munetake was in a fit of anger, and anything he said at this moment would be wrong, unless there was news of the 12th Infantry Regiment.
"She's mute! What should we do?"
Katayama Shihachi, having finally calmed down, braced himself and said:
"Your Excellency, the 12th Infantry Regiment has probably run into trouble. Perhaps we should send a reconnaissance plane to investigate the area around Luodian; we might be able to find the answer."
"Yosh, send a telegram to headquarters requesting air support."
After finishing his speech, Yamamuro Munetake plopped down in his chair, looking as if all his energy had been drained.
He had roughly guessed the outcome, but he was simply unwilling to face reality.
This is a regiment; if it is annihilated by the Chinese, Yamamuro Munetake's future in the army will be over.
His biggest worry right now isn't Adachi Nyūsan, but the regimental flag.
In Yuepu, the comrades from the reconnaissance company were also searching for the regimental flag. They searched every nook and cranny of the 12th Regiment's command post, but couldn't find it, so they had to give up.
The battlefield has been cleared. Although the Japanese regimental flag was not captured, the spoils were still plentiful, including radios, codebooks, and a large number of top-secret documents.
Because the attack launched by the reconnaissance company was so sudden, the Japanese regimental headquarters personnel had no time to react before the reconnaissance company's assault platoon stormed into the command post and killed the Japanese staff officer who was preparing to destroy the radio.
Luodian, Headquarters of the Second Security Regiment
Hu Lian's hearty laughter could be heard from a great distance:
"Senior, that battle was really exciting!"
"I heard that the Japanese regimental headquarters in Yuepu was also destroyed. This is equivalent to the complete annihilation of the 12th Infantry Regiment. Once the results are announced, they will surely shock people at home and abroad."
The principal and Commander Chen are waiting for good news. How should this battle report be written?
The complete annihilation of an entire Japanese infantry regiment was an immense achievement. In the past, Hu Lian would never have sought Zhao Yunwen's opinion.
But things are different now. Zhao Yunwen is no longer the good-for-nothing he was at Huangpu. His connections from the first class are far superior to those of Hu Lian, a fourth-class graduate.
Zhao Yunwen saw right through Hu Lian's thoughts; he didn't care about these empty titles, but rather about real benefits.
Since Hu Lian asked, he simply said:
"Commander Hu, the 66th Regiment is the main force of the Central Army, and you are naturally the ones playing the leading roles."
The Second Security Regiment of Jiangsu Province will cooperate with the main force in combat; I only need to achieve a minor merit.
Hu Lian was surprised that Zhao Yunwen would voluntarily give the credit to the 66th Regiment, and quickly declined, saying:
"Senior, I can't take the credit for this. You came up with the whole battle plan. The 66th Regiment only contributed a little. I dare not take credit for it."
"Commander Hu, you don't need to be modest. Without the 66th Regiment taking the lead, even the best plan cannot be implemented."
"That's settled then. Quickly report the victory to Commander Chen!"
Hu Lian was only being modest. Since Zhao Yunwen was so sensible, he would gladly accept the offer and then said;
"Senior, then I'll accept this favor."
The security regiment's pay and supplies all depended on the senior students to raise funds, which was extremely difficult.
"How about you take the lion's share of the spoils, seven for you and three for me?"
Hu Lian was returning the favor, and Zhao Yunwen didn't stand on ceremony and agreed, making it a deal between the two of them, where each got what they wanted.
Now Hu Lian no longer owed Zhao Yunwen a favor and could rightfully claim the credit.
Compared to military achievements, spoils of war were not as tempting to Hu Lian, as he was a direct descendant of the Civil Engineering Department and had no shortage of supplies.
Deputy Regiment Commander Cao leaned over and said:
"Senior, we've got a lot of loot this time. To be honest, I've got my eye on those four mountain guns."
"Our 66th Regiment only needs four mountain guns and two infantry guns. The rest are yours, how about that?"
Of all the spoils of war, the most valuable were the four mountain guns and two infantry guns. The 66th Regiment didn't lose out, and they even made a good point about it.
Zhao Yunwen knew that the 66th Regiment had fought a fierce battle at Luodian, almost wiping out their entire organization, so he didn't mind letting them benefit a little. He immediately said:
"You can have those four 4mm guns too. They're good for taking down Japanese tanks, so the brothers can shed less blood."
Hu Lian was instantly moved and, holding Zhao Yunwen's hand, said:
"Senior, on behalf of the 66th Regiment, I accept this favor."
Let's hand over the positions now!
