Chapter 105: The Outpost Battle - The Lone Battalion Completely Destroys the 101st Regiment
In the north of the city, battle broke out unexpectedly.
Zhitang, an outpost of the guerrilla detachment, was teeming with Japanese search squadrons.
The two sides engaged in fierce fighting. The Xinyuan Squadron advanced in skirmish lines, while the soldiers of the Seventh Company lay prone in the trenches and waited quietly.
Squad leader Yang Guai quietly reminded the others to get closer before hitting.
After being incorporated into the guerrilla detachment, the isolated battalion was re-equipped with Springfield rifles, one Browning automatic rifle per squad, two MP38 submachine guns, and two 98K sniper rifles with 4x scopes.
After accumulating enough points, Zhao Yunwen became more generous and equipped each 98K with a scope, allowing the troops to adapt to urban warfare in advance.
Each platoon has one Browning medium machine gun, and each company has a fire platoon with three Browning medium machine guns and three 60mm M2 mortars, enough firepower to suppress the Aragaki Company.
The Japanese only had one company, and the company commander of the 7th Company, Lin Huaizhou, decided to hold off the invading enemy until they got closer before engaging them.
Lin Huaizhou was a veteran of the isolated battalion. After Shangguan Zhibiao stopped serving as company commander, Lin Huaizhou, as deputy company commander, took over and was promoted to captain.
The isolated battalion expanded to more than 700 men, half of whom were deserters gathered along the way, all of whom were veterans who had survived countless battles.
After changing his clothes, Lin Huaizhou was full of confidence and took on more than 100 Japanese soldiers.
The fortifications at Zhitang were complete, and the isolated battalion reinforced them after they moved in. The firing range had long been cleared, and the Japanese soldiers were all within the effective killing range of the machine gun fire.
Seeing that the time was right, Lin Huaizhou fired a burst of submachine guns at the Japanese soldiers.
The sound of gunfire was the order. Three Browning medium machine guns, arranged in a fan shape, roared, spraying out a dense hail of bullets that sent the Japanese soldiers flying in disarray.
Yang Guai didn't rush to fire. Between a submachine gun and a rifle, he chose the 98K. Bolt-action rifles were more convenient to use, and 120 rounds of ammunition plus 4 grenades were enough.
The defenders' firepower made Captain Aragaki frown; he had been deceived by his superiors again.
"You call these defeated soldiers?!"
Under the first round of fire, the Japanese suffered thirty or forty casualties, almost a small squad, which was a painful blow for Captain Aragaki.
The Japanese soldiers obediently lay prone on the ground, and the Type 11 light machine guns were set up, while the grenade launcher squad waited for an opportunity to launch a sneak attack.
The tactics of the Aragaki Company were conventional and simple, but practical. Coupled with the accurate shooting of the riflemen, few could defeat them with the same number of troops.
The predecessor of the isolated battalion was the 88th Division. The individual soldiers' quality was no less than that of the Japanese. After the equipment was upgraded, the Japanese's tactics no longer worked.
The Type 11 light machine gun was rubbish compared to the Browning medium machine gun; it was completely suppressed, and the rifleman would be rendered useless if he looked up.
The Japanese could only pin their hopes on the grenade launcher. Yang Guai hated the Japanese small cannons, and his gun quickly got into the sights of the main gunner. The distance of more than 400 meters was clearly visible in the scope.
Yang Guai's lips curled up, his gaze was cold, and he gently pressed the trigger with his finger, the bullet hitting the target's left chest accurately.
The fully-equipped pointed bullet struck his body, tumbling inside his chest cavity; even a miracle couldn't save him.
The assistant gunner immediately stepped in, but his movements couldn't keep up with the speed at which Yang Guai pulled the bolt. The gun fired again, and the assistant gunner fell to the ground, joining the main gunner in death.
Completely humiliated, Iizuka Kunigoro swung his hand and slapped Captain Aragaki so hard his face turned into a pig's head, cursing angrily:
"You idiots, you're all useless, a bunch of useless trash!"
Senior staff officer Yuki Sakamoto leaned over and said:
"Commander, this Sulu Guerrilla Detachment must be the Chinese who ambushed Xiong Gu Battalion before. It's a good opportunity to avenge our defeat."
"Yosh, fire! Let the Chinese feel the wrath of the Imperial Army!"
Major Sakamoto excitedly accepted the order and left. Not long after, the Japanese regimental artillery bared its fangs.
With four 75mm mountain guns, six infantry guns, and four rapid-fire cannons, Iizuka Kunigoro unleashed his full arsenal of heavy firepower, wreaking havoc on the isolated battalion's position.
Yang Guai curled up in the narrow cat-ear hole, praying to every god and Buddha in the sky, hoping that the shells would not fall on his head.
Zhitang was previously the position of the defeated soldiers of the 36th Division. After they retreated to Wuxian, they left behind a large number of fortifications, which were just right for the use of the isolated battalion.
Zhao Yunwen's task for them was to hold out for a day and a night to buy time for the main force to renovate the city. They could also call for fire support from the regimental artillery company and the directly subordinate artillery battalion, but the isolated battalion could withstand this level of firepower.
The artillery barrage lasted for half an hour, and the exposed positions of the isolated battalion were almost completely razed, with limited effect.
Kunigoro Iizuka was very satisfied and ordered a general offensive, deploying four infantry companies at once, along with artillery to support the operation. Kunigoro Iizuka was full of confidence and anticipation.
Zhao Yunwen was also watching the Japanese attack formation, seven or eight hundred men, quite a large force.
"Staff Officer Xie, it's only polite to retaliate. Telegraph the artillery battalion and have the mountain artillery company teach the Japanese a lesson!"
"Don't fire too many, six rounds will suffice!"
Xie Polu excitedly accepted the order and left. This was 16 mountain guns firing simultaneously, enough to give the Japanese a hard time.
Zhao Yunwen pretended to enjoy the show by picking up his binoculars, but in reality, the minimap displayed the entire battlefield environment; he was taking an open-book exam.
Hundreds of Japanese soldiers formed a well-organized military formation and advanced rapidly, exuding an overwhelming sense of power and pressure.
The 7th and 8th companies of the isolated battalion, along with the artillery company, were all deployed, ready to fight the Japanese infantry group for three hundred rounds.
Suddenly, Shangguan Zhibiao heard the sound of artillery shells whistling through the air. His face changed drastically, thinking that he was about to be bombed again. However, the shells landed in the midst of the Japanese troops.
Shangguan Zhibiao was overjoyed and excitedly clenched his fist; this was his cannon.
Witnessing the Japanese soldiers being blown up and fleeing in panic, Shangguan Zhibiao felt a sudden lump in his throat and his eyes reddened.
In Shanghai, they were always the ones being bombed. Most of the brothers in the Nationalist government's most elite 88th Division perished in the shelling.
Compared to Shangguan Zhibiao, who was filled with emotion, Zhao Yunwen was already used to it. "When you're poor, use tactical infiltration; when you're rich, use artillery fire." Now that he had strong firepower, he naturally wanted to show off his strength.
"Baka yarou, mountain artillery! The Chinese have mountain artillery!"
"Quickly, request tactical guidance from His Excellency the General!"
Iizuka Kunigoro screamed at the top of his lungs, and the senior staff officer could only kindly remind him:
"Commander, the heavy artillery battalion has not yet arrived."
"Baka yarou! Without heavy artillery, do you think the Empire's warriors can't fight?"
The Japanese soldiers, caught in a dilemma, did not retreat but charged forward under artillery fire. The isolated battalion countered with full firepower.
The battle intensified. Would the Japanese break through the enemy lines successfully, or would the isolated battalion hold off the offensive? After the appetizer, the main show would begin.
