Wasteland Survivalist: A Scientific Guide to Post-Apocalyptic Survival
Chapter 205 Vaccines
Next, Bai Lang provided the two people present with another bombshell piece of news.
"I have some fantastic news to share: an mRNA vaccine for rabies has been developed."
It has recently entered the phase III clinical trial stage, and the authorities are organizing survivors to participate in the test.
We are preparing to verify the vaccine's effectiveness in preventing disease in real-world virus exposure environments.
Collect data on adverse reactions and verify its actual protective efficacy in a large population.
"So, survivors are needed as guinea pigs. In that case, we'll definitely need to distribute more antigen reagents."
Upon hearing this, Gu Lang suddenly realized what was going on.
Bai Lang smiled, disagreeing with Gu Lang's point of view.
"That's not entirely true, since it's already a Phase III vaccine, which greatly reduces the risk."
At most, it would just mean immune failure, but it wouldn't necessarily lead to direct infection and a seizure.
It is said that the Phase I and Phase II clinical trials were conducted using death row inmates in safe zones.
The side effects and long-term consequences are enormous; that's when the real risks begin.
Furthermore, the survivors in the danger zone now want to reach the official safe zone.
The prerequisite is to voluntarily receive the Phase III clinical trial vaccine and cooperate with the official data collection efforts.
Gu Lang pondered for a while and then raised another question.
"So, to verify the effectiveness of a vaccine, wouldn't we have to deliberately get infected with the virus?"
"You're overthinking it. It's not that inhumane."
After receiving the vaccine, participants will continue to live their current lives as before.
However, if attacked by a berserker, resulting in accidental contact with bodily fluids.
Even if they survive, they will inevitably be forced to leave their original team.
If you have already been vaccinated and have no symptoms, you can still answer the questions on the flyer correctly.
At this point, you can go to the designated location and report to the officials.
If you successfully become immune to the virus, after your body data is collected, you will be able to enter the official safe zone and be assigned to work at the forward base.
It's like having an extra choice, an extra life, and no more worries about infection.
Therefore, most survivors will still choose to get vaccinated.
If the immune response fails, it's simply because of your unique constitution and bad luck.
Anyway, there's no downside, so it's a win-win situation.
"Okay, do you know when the next vaccine airdrop will be?"
"Vaccines aren't something that can be airdropped for you to administer yourself," Bai Lang chuckled. "I heard you need to register your personal information first, and then it's done by official staff."
"So how exactly do we do it?"
"I'm not too clear about the process either. I came to the beach this time to get vaccinated."
Since neither of you has been vaccinated yet, let's think of a solution together here.
"Wait, maybe there's a clue in the flight case," He Ping, who had been listening for a while, said.
"That makes sense. I'll go look it up again."
Gu Lang took out all the antigen reagents from the flight case and found a stack of "answer sheets" at the bottom.
He Ping took a few ballpoint pens and a stack of menus from the restaurant bar and distributed them to the three people present.
This question was much more difficult than the "flyer" in Bai Lang's hand.
There are three questions in total. The first question is about matrix operations, and the second question is about solving a system of linear equations.
The third task involves calculating the probability using a normal distribution and then replacing the numbers with letters.
The answer to each question corresponds to the date, time, and location coordinates.
"This math problem is too difficult. I dropped out of high school and can't count on it."
"It's up to you guys. I'm going to sit at the berserker's table."
A minute later, Gu Lang was the first to give up. He slammed his pen on the table and started wandering around the restaurant.
"I hung up a tall tree during my college years, and now I'm going out to reflect on myself."
Three minutes later, Bai Lang was the second to give up. He threw down his pen, put his hands behind his head, and walked toward the entrance gate.
Only He Ping remained, still hunched over the table writing, his pen tip swiftly gliding across the paper, making a scratching sound. He had already filled several pages with the order menu.
"Come back, everyone, I've solved it."
Five minutes later, He Ping waved the "exam paper" and called the other two back.
"The vaccination will be administered at 3 p.m. on November 25th, at the Baisha Bay fishing pier where the shipping crates were previously placed."
He Ping pushed the menu, which was filled with derivation steps, to the center of the table.
"Thank you for your hard work, Director He. Are you sure there haven't been any mistakes?"
"I won't make a mistake. I verified each problem using two different solutions."
He Ping then pulled out another menu.
"Holy crap, awesome! Compared to you, we're practically illiterate." Bai Lang gave a thumbs up.
"You truly deserve to be called a scientist in the aerospace field. This time, we all owe you a lot." Gu Lang quickly praised his teammate.
With four days left until November 25th, the three of them quickly discussed it and decided to stay at the mountaintop restaurant for the time being.
The terrain here is high and offers a wide view. There is only one road leading up the mountain, making it easy to defend and difficult to attack.
There is also a decorative pond behind the restaurant, which can serve as a water source.
As night fell, the surroundings gradually became pitch black.
The three decided to take turns on duty on the viewing platform, with He Ping taking the first shift.
"Since we've come all this way to a restaurant, let's go in and cook dinner together."
I just took a quick look around inside and found quite a few good things.
Gu Lang gave Bai Lang a wink, and the two turned on their flashlights and headed into the dark space inside the restaurant.
Under the beam of the flashlight, you can see that the ground is covered with a thick layer of dust.
This hilltop restaurant had clearly been abandoned for many years before the disaster.
Place the flashlight flat on the ground, and you can see that there are no footprints on the ground.
Based on his past experience exploring ruins, Gu Lang deduced that no one had entered this place since it was abandoned.
It's possible that the boss employed an old doorman who had worked there for many years.
After all, the architecture of this Western restaurant suggests a high-end positioning.
Judging from the well-preserved marble countertop of the bar, the crystal chandelier hanging on the wall, and the grand piano in the corner.
The renovation alone cost at least several million.
It could also be that the location is too remote and the path up the mountain is too long, so the scavengers are too lazy to climb that high.
"Judging from the remaining beverages, this place closed down around 2020."
Gu Lang walked into the bar and casually picked up a 2-liter bottle of Coke that had been expired for a long time.
Due to the drop in temperature, the bottle has shrunk significantly, turning into a strange square shape.
He nonchalantly unscrewed the bottle cap, tilted his head back, and took a sip.
"Uh, it's completely flat, and even the sweetness has faded."
Aspartame is garbage; it breaks down over time and is far inferior to the older sucrose version.
Gu Lang's current feeling is basically: the earth is rotating vertically - the equator has changed drastically.
