Chapter 42 To the Son
Ron lifted the tent flap and saw Eric standing outside with a fawning smile, inviting him to sit down.
"Brother Ron! You look really impressive today," he flattered as he entered.
"The news of you killing that high-ranking orc today has spread throughout the entire army. This is the first high-ranking orc our new lord has killed, second only to Viscount Daniel."
Ron was unfazed by Victor's flattery.
Victor leaned closer, his face displaying the casual ease typically reserved for acquaintances:
"I have some news about what happened today. Buck Cucumber went too far."
He spoke while observing Ron's expression:
"I originally suggested coming to your side to provide support, but that cucumber insisted that you could hold the line, so I crossed out your support mission."
Ron raised an eyebrow:
"So, this cucumber is the culprit?"
"He's the captain, so my words don't carry any weight with him," Victor said righteously.
Ron knew exactly what the other side was up to: "Any other information?"
"Yes, yes," Victor quickly replied.
"As you know, among our group of new lords is a baron's second son, who has no high-ranking knights as squires."
Today I almost ended up all alone; besides Eric, he was the worst off.
Victor chuckled and lowered his voice:
"Brother Ron, if you have the capacity tomorrow, could you lend me a hand?"
Ron looked at him: "We'll see! I'll step in if things get really bad."
Victor's eyes lit up. This was exactly what he had come for. Although he hadn't received the definite certificate, he was already very satisfied.
He rubbed his hands together and chuckled, "Okay, okay! I'll be going now, so as not to disturb your rest."
He slipped out of the tent even faster than he had come.
Nothing happened that night.
The next morning, Ron and Victor handed over the camp.
Halfway through the morning, the orcs still hadn't launched an attack.
In the past few days, quite a few more orcs have arrived at the orc camp, and the number doesn't seem to have decreased much.
Their own troops had suffered considerable losses, and Viscount Daniel had already sent men to request reinforcements, but the reinforcements were slow to arrive, casting a shadow over the lords' hearts.
At noon, the scouts brought news.
"My lord, there's some commotion at the orc camp. The lizardmen and goatmen are arguing, supposedly because of the battle losses these past few days."
Two high-ranking warriors of the goat-men died, while the lizardmen survived; the two sides nearly came to blows.
Ron's heart skipped a beat.
The scout lowered his voice: "Orcs from other tribes are trying to break up the fight, but it seems they can't. There's also a goat-man hanging outside the orc camp; he's the one who ran away yesterday."
Ron nodded and told him to leave.
Hart raised an eyebrow: "The orcs are fighting amongst themselves? That's good news."
By the afternoon, the orcs finally organized an attack, but compared to the offensives of the previous three days, it was simply not on the same level.
It seems the orcs also suffered heavy casualties, especially the lizardmen and goatmen, who lost the most. Many new tribes have arrived, and the two of them probably don't want to lead the charge anymore.
The day passed, the orcs retreated, and neither side suffered significant losses.
As evening fell, Ron was resting in his tent when Laun came in.
"Sir, someone from Buck's side has come and asked you to come over."
Ron frowned. "Let him in."
The one who entered was a middle-aged knight, whose attitude was quite polite. He bowed and spoke:
"Baron Ron, Captain Buck sent me to invite you to discuss the war. A banquet has been prepared."
Ron looked at him: "What is Baron Buck up to?"
The middle-aged knight added, "The captain said that oversights are inevitable in military affairs. Any misunderstandings should be cleared up promptly."
Ron suddenly laughed. Was he admitting defeat?
"I see."
He stood up and walked to the middle-aged knight:
"Go back and tell Buck that I'll be there in a bit."
Hart muttered from the side, "Sir, what is Buck going to do? Are you really going?"
Ron shook his head: "Let's go see what tricks he's up to."
Hart quickly replied, "I'll go with you, sir."
"What nonsense are you talking about? We should have invited Ron too," Ron said with a laugh.
Barker's Camp.
Ron brought Lauenhart with him.
A dinner banquet and drinks have been prepared inside the tent.
Ron curled his lip, thinking, "A bastard child like him putting on such a show."
Buck rose to greet him: "Baron Ron, I've long admired you, and I never imagined you were such a genius knight."
"You're not even twenty yet, are you? You've got a good chance of becoming a full-fledged knight! I love talking to talented young people like you."
"Baron Buck is too kind. You also broke through to become a high-ranking knight's squire in your early twenties. I think you have a great chance of becoming a full knight as well," Ron said dismissively.
Buck is also a high-level expert, and he has a high-level knight under his command, making him quite formidable.
Come to think of it, if this guy didn't have some talent, with so many illegitimate children of the Marquis, how could he have become the pioneer lord?
"Haha, yes, yes, I hope we can all become official knights."
"Come, come, pour Baron Ron a drink," Buck ordered his men.
Ron, of course, wouldn't touch a single bite of the food here, so he said:
"Baron Buck, let's get down to business. You didn't call me here just for drinks, did you?"
"Actually, it's nothing important. I just wanted to explain the support we provided yesterday. More importantly, I wanted to have a chat with you, Ron."
Ron didn't react for a moment, and Buck continued to speak.
"I see you've suffered quite a few losses, Baron Ron. If you're willing, I can share some of my men with you. Let's talk privately."
Ron still couldn't figure out what Buck was up to.
"Baron Ron, would you like to be friends with me?"
Ron looked up and found Buck scrutinizing him.
That look, that tone.
Ron finally understood.
He's giving me a gift!!!
They've got their eyes on me.
"Damn it!" Ron was furious.
Ron didn't have any prejudice against these people, but you can't target me!
Ron abruptly stood up and led Lauenhart away, burning with rage.
Watching Ron's departing figure.
Buck licked his lips.
"What a tempting little apple. I really want it..."
