Just because I wrote "Zhu Xian," the school beauty sent me razor blades.
Chapter 21 Recording
Tianxing Entertainment's recording studio is on the sixteenth floor.
When the elevator doors opened, Lin Yuan almost thought he had wandered into the wrong film set.
The soundproof door at the end of the corridor had a heavy, matte black finish, with eight red characters on it that read "Recording Area, No Unauthorized Entry," making it look like a bank vault at first glance. Pushing the door open, in the center of the control room was a huge mixing console, its surface covered with a dense array of faders and indicator lights gleaming coldly; through the soundproof glass, you could see a condenser microphone standing in the adjacent recording studio. The lighting was also specially designed to create an atmosphere—a warm yellow with a hint of blue, as if it were ready to shoot a music video at any moment.
Xu Nian followed behind him, her fingertips unconsciously clutching the hem of her clothes. It wasn't that she hadn't been to a recording studio before—she had recorded albums and singles in her three years since debut, and she knew this place like the back of her hand. But today was different. Fei Zhao was personally leading the way, and what she was going to record was a song that the company had poured all its resources into, aiming for the August Star Cloud Chart.
"Don't be nervous." Lin Yuan turned around and grinned at her. "If you sing off-key later, no one will grab the microphone from you."
Xu Nian smiled slightly, amused by his words.
Fei Zhao walked ahead, glanced back at him, and said, "You're quite good at comforting people."
"Of course." Lin Yuan said without any modesty, "My greatest strength is that I can help those around me quickly regain their confidence."
"Oh?" Fei Zhao raised an eyebrow.
"For example, right now," Lin Yuan pointed to himself, "standing amidst a pile of professional equipment, I'm not flustered at all, because I firmly believe—the most valuable thing is what's in my head."
Fei Zhao: "..."
This person's shamelessness is truly reassuring.
The three walked through the equipment area to the mixing console, where a dedicated recording engineer was sitting and waiting.
The sound engineer was a man in his thirties surnamed Chen, wearing black-rimmed glasses and a T-shirt with the words "Don't rush me, I'm just getting by" printed on it.
Fei Zhao stepped aside to let Lin Yuan and Xu Nian pass behind him, walked in with brisk steps, and introduced himself directly:
"Brother Chen, this is Lin Yuan, our company's exclusive composer for this August chart-topping project. Today, he's on-site supervising the recording and directing all vocal and arrangement details."
When Brother Chen saw Lin Yuan, he was stunned for a moment, clearly not expecting that the legendary composer would look like a college student who had not yet graduated.
But Brother Chen, having seen it all, only hesitated for half a second before regaining his professional smile: "Teacher Lin, how do we record it?"
Lin Yuan stretched his neck and looked at Brother Chen: "Let me sing the verse a cappella first, to set an example for the singers."
"Then should I just set up a simple backing track?"
"No need, just sing it dry." Lin Yuan waved his hand. "If this song can't stand up without accompaniment, then there's something wrong with how I wrote it."
He spoke casually, but Brother Chen silently gave him a thumbs up.
Arrogant enough, confident enough.
Lin Yuan walked towards the heavy soundproof door at the far end of the control room, pushed it open, entered the recording studio next door, and closed the door behind him. He stood in front of the condenser microphone and casually adjusted the height of the microphone stand.
"Xu Nian, listen carefully to her breathing and emotions." His voice came from the monitoring speakers in the control room.
He cleared his throat, his shoulders swaying slightly, as if he were truly dozing in the sun, and a soft male voice slowly began to speak:
The July wind is lazy; even the clouds seem warm.
"The weather will be muggy soon~ then a shower will come after the clouds~"
There were no deliberately high notes, no flashy trills; the tone was clear and transparent, with a touch of just the right amount of languidness. The breath was like a gentle breeze sweeping across the coastline on a summer night—gentle, relaxed, carrying the clean emotions unique to young people, and softly landing in the eardrums.
After the verse ended, he smoothly transitioned into the beginning of the chorus—
"The summer breeze, I'll always remember it, clearly saying, you love me..."
Xu Nian listened intently, even softening her breathing, completely forgetting that it was her turn to go on stage next.
After Lin Yuan finished singing, he pushed open the soundproof door and came out. He looked up and saw her staring blankly into space. He raised an eyebrow at her and said, "Hey, snap out of it."
"Huh?" Xu Nian trembled violently, her cheeks instantly turning red. "I...I..."
"The way you look at yourself makes it seem like I just put a spell on you," Lin Yuan chuckled. "Watch your drool, don't let it drip."
Xu Nian subconsciously reached to wipe her mouth, but only halfway through did she realize she'd been tricked. Blushing, she whispered, "I...I didn't..."
"Alright, alright, I won't tease you anymore." Lin Yuan waved his hand, his expression turning serious. "Did you get a feeling from the song I sang just now?"
Xu Nian thought for a moment, then answered earnestly, "Very soft...very gentle...like whispering in my ear."
"Yes, that's the core idea." Lin Yuan nodded. "This song isn't called 'Summer Typhoon' or 'Summer Tornado,' it's called 'Summer Wind.' What is wind? Wind is invisible and intangible. It passes by you, you feel it, but it won't blow you down."
Xu Nian nodded thoughtfully.
Lin Yuan gave up his seat and gestured towards the recording studio with his chin: "Come on, try those lines from the verses first, 'The Wind of July'."
Xu Nian took a deep breath, walked through the soundproof door into the recording studio, put on the monitoring headphones, and stood in front of the microphone.
In the control room, Lin Yuan sat down next to the mixing console and pressed the intercom button.
"Nod when you're ready."
Xu Nian nodded over the soundproof glass.
"Walk."
The moment she opened her mouth, her voice was clear and bright, and her breath was steady—"The July wind is lazy, even the clouds are getting hot." It would be fitting in any pop song.
But after listening, Lin Yuan pressed the intercom button: "Stop."
Xu Nian's heart tightened, thinking she had messed up.
"Overall, there's nothing wrong with you; your pitch and rhythm are both good, but your emotions are too tense. You're singing too 'full,' like you're trying too hard to sing, rather than naturally feeling the wind."
He released the intercom button and turned to look at Brother Chen: "I'll go in and demonstrate it for her."
Pushing open the soundproof door, Lin Yuan entered the recording studio and stood beside Xu Nian. He didn't look at the microphone, but casually swayed his shoulders, as if he were genuinely feeling sleepy under the afternoon sun, and hummed softly:
The July wind is lazy; even the clouds seem warm.
The voice was so relaxed that it didn't sound like singing; it sounded more like a sigh hummed after a long yawn.
"The tempo of the verses should be relaxed. Don't make it too intense. Keep the mood light. Like the wind passing by the window, stirring the curtains, but not waking you up."
Xu Nian looked at his profile and nodded as if she understood.
Lin Yuan patted her shoulder, turned around and walked back to the control room, pressing the intercom button again:
"Let's do it one more time. This time, don't think about anything. Just imagine you're home alone, staring out the window, humming to yourself."
Xu Nian took a breath, closed her eyes, and spoke again. This time, she deliberately slowed down her pronunciation, the last syllable rising and falling gently, as if she were humming it unconsciously while gazing out the window in the afternoon. The relaxed feeling was much better than the last time.
In the control room, Brother Chen tilted his head slightly, and Fei Zhao nodded gently as well.
"There's been progress." Lin Yuan pressed the intercom button. "But it's not enough. Let's do it again."
This time.
Xu Nian closed her eyes, completely letting go of that tension. The moment she opened her mouth, the atmosphere in the entire recording studio changed completely.
Relaxed, languid, and clear, it carries the unique sweetness and gentleness of a young girl. The verses leave just the right amount of space, not too crowded or full; the chorus rises naturally, gently progressing without a trace of screaming or force, like the evening breeze passing through the sycamore leaves, gently enveloping all emotions.
Xu Nian's voice drifted by like the wind:
"...The summer breeze is blowing warmly, passing through my hair, passing through my ears, whispering softly about our summer."
The last note faded gently into the air. Xu Nian perfectly captured the most moving quality of Wen Lan's version of "Summer Wind" from her previous life.
Lin Yuan's lips slowly curved into a smile as he pressed the intercom button. "That's the taste."
Xu Nian's eyes finally reddened.
She bit her lip, trying hard not to let the tears fall, but the corners of her mouth couldn't help but turn up.
Lin Yuan gestured for her to come out. Xu Nian pushed open the soundproof door and walked out of the recording studio, her eyes still red.
Seeing that expression of both crying and laughing made Lin Yuan laugh: "Hey, hey, don't cry, this song is called 'Summer Wind,' not 'Summer Tears.'"
"I...I didn't cry..." Xu Nian wiped her eyes with the back of her hand. "It was sweat."
"Okay, it's sweat." Lin Yuan pulled out a tissue from the side and handed it to her. "Summer sweat is also part of the summer wind, no problem."
Fei Zhao finally spoke, his tone carrying a rare hint of praise: "Xu Nian, you sang well."
"Brother Chen, keep that last one."
Fei Zhao gestured to Chen Ge.
"It must be kept!" Brother Chen was so excited that his glasses slipped down to the tip of his nose.
